...Agios Gordios We visited Agios Gordios from 12th to 26th May 2008. Agios Gordios is a one street resort, so is not for those looking for a lively night life, but for people like us who want quiet evenings talking to your partner, or new friends, over a meal in a Taverna or late night drinks, it proved ideal. The only exception to this may be the PINK PALACE Hotel Complex, this you pass as you come down the hill into Agios. You get the impression the youngsters who go in there do not emerge again until the end of their holidays. The one street I mentioned starts near the top of the Village at the 'BUS STOP', every notice you read or guidance you are given all seem to start at the 'BUS STOP'. Buses run from here to CORFU TOWN, about 16 kilometers on the other side of the Island. While we were there the buses went at 09...

Lord Complex, Agios Geordios, Corfu

Advantages: Beach, weather, food, people
Disadvantages: not much to do, waterhoppers

.../drink to the pool area which is a pain when self catering as this can get costly. You have to pay extra for air conditioning and we didn't feel it was worth it. Make sure you take mosquito repellent and cream - you will need it. We had a first floor room facing the hills and had a good view of the sunset. They came in and cleaned the rooms very briefly daily although in 2 weeks the towels were only changed about 3 times and some nights the bedding hadn't been changed. The owner and staff were very friendly. The complex is about 30 minute walk from the centre of St Georges. The beach was a 5-10 minute walk as was the supermarket. St Georges - Agios Gordios St Georges was a nice town although very quite. The resort was good for older couples and those with families however not for anyone after a lively time. LITHOS THE BEST FOOD IN AGHIOS GORDIOS CORFU

Advantages: BEST STAFADO IN THE WHOLE OF GREECE
Disadvantages: NOT EATING THERE TONIGHT

...By the end of this review you the reader will probably have the idea that this was our favourite place to eat. We started the Holiday, as you do, intending to eat in a different Taverna each night, that works OK until you fall into a place such as LITHOS. This is a small place on the One Street of Aghios Gordios, sandwiched between two larger places, Argo and Mermaid. It has about 10 Tables in the front, with a further 6 in the rear. A small Bar area and the Kitchens. The Father Demitri is the skill behind the cooking with his son doing the serving, the fact that the Son is a dead ringer for a Young George Cluney has no bearing on the wife's desire to eat here often. VILLA BRIDGE THE PLACE TO STAY IN AGHIOS GORDIOS

Advantages: Quiet Nights
Disadvantages: Did not stay long enough.

...We stayed at the Villa Bridge in Aghios Gordios from 12th to 26th May 2008. We booked the Holiday thru Manos Travel and paid a total of £604 for the two of us for the two weeks, this included all the extras, fuel surcharge, Airport taxes etc etc. Flying from East Midlands. The Villa Bridge is located at the Southern end of Aghios Gordios, and can be reached either by walking along the Beach Boardwalk, or thru the paved fottpaths thru the back of the Village. Either way you are about 5 to 10 mins from the Street with the Tavernas, or one minute from the beach, about 50 yards. The accomodation is set in its own gardens, there are two Bungalow type buildings. The first nearest the gate comprises a Studio for two, and a Two Bedroomed apartment that sleeps 4. ...needed it or give directions or advice. They also had stocks of used books a board games which was quite handy for out by the pool. The only gripe we had really was the location.....it's not near anywhere else in walking distance. If you want to go to the small town of Elounda or the larger Agios Nikolaos then you had to get a taxi which would cost you around 5 euros each way. We weren't at all impressed with Agios Nikolaos....it was really busy, full of shops and bars and awful restaurants. Elounda was a little bit nicer and we ended up having to go to the local doctors there as our son got an ear infection. The service was free although we did have to wait over an hour to be seen but excellent otherwise. One other thing that gets our thumbs up was the fantastic Kids Club. It was hotel run and the staff were absolutely brilliant...

...The pigeons have been left in possession of Agios Prokopios Church. When you enter, the door creaks and they rise in a flurry of wingbeats to find their way out through the broken windows around the high central dome. Their droppings pattern the floor, in layers beneath their perches, in blotchy spots elsewhere. Provided you can avoid treading on the more thickly caked areas, the echo of your footfalls will replace the frantic fluttering once the birds have flown away. The pews have been stripped out, as has the altarpiece and most of the interior decoration. Probably there were icons here, and, whilst they may simply have been destroyed, they might instead have been looted for their value on the illicit art market. Part of a high pulpit remains and holds a pigeons? nest, but the steps leading up to it have gone. Below...

ALEVIZIS GREAT LUNCH STOP

Advantages: Large Brandies
Disadvantages: A few rocks block the view.

...Alevizis is located at the South End of the Beach at Aghios Gordios, just before you reach the very large Aghios Gordios Hotel that stands above the end of the beach. I think this was the best of the Tavernas that front the beach for a lunchtime break from the sun. This is based on the quality of what we had and also the price. We lunched there on several days, it is a simple place with about 20 tables, 15 on the terrace with a further few inside near the bar. the MYTHOS was always served cold. Housewine very acceptable. Brandies tend to come in large measures. The star of the place is the very friendly son of the owners, he delights in encouraging the learning of Greek, but does tend to concentrate on the Ladies. Sabastians Taverna at the Top of the Street

Disadvantages: Large Menu & too many "IS EVERYTHING OK"

...Sabastian's Taverna. This taverna is located at the Top Of the street in Agios Gordios about 50 yards down from the Bus Stop. It is set on a large terrace that looks down the street towards the Sea but no Sea View. We only ate there once, please take this into account, but we also met more people who said the same rather than those who had gone back. The first thing that struck me was that you were not automatically supplied with bread, very un-greek. You could order "Bread & Butter" or Garlic Bread. Our meal. Starters:- Galic mushrooms, which my wife was pleased with. I had the Little Banana Peppers stuffed with spicy feta, very good, but felt the two requests "Is everthing OK" during the starters a little over the top. Steven's On the Hill but not too high.

Advantages: Good swiming pool for a lunch and swim option.

...STEVEN'S ON THE HILL. It is set on the road that leads up to the Agios Gordios Hotel, it sounds like it may be quite a hike, but it is not too far, about 100 yards from the Bus Stop. It is a Hotel but we only used the Taverna (Restaurant) so can not comment on the standard of accommodation. It has tables set in the Garden the majority are under cover. There is also a large wood fired oven in the garden but was not being used that night. There is a very good sized swimming pool, so would be a good option if staying elsewhere in Agios to use during the day. The night we called in there turned out to be only one other couple having a meal, so it would be difficult to comment on the atmosphere of the place. Looking thru the menu there was a section where they did themed nights, Greek Night with live music and dancing...

Advantages: amazingly cheap, good fun, sociable, great views, beach
Disadvantages: only good if your up for a good party

...and more and the other facilities include a volleyball pitch - where there is always a competition, a jacuzzi - although not luxurious! and internet connections. there is even massages and hairdressers available. There are usually events going on such as toga parties... and although its all a bit tacky, its all fun. if you doing a bit of travelling on a budget, then this is a really good place to stay for a bit of rest before you carry on lugging round your back pack. Excursions are also great - one rock jumping one as I recall- I was too scared to do that! Seriously good fun all round and ideal for back packers or students travelling on a budget.
