Advantages: It's an excellent album Disadvantages: a-ha should be better than excellent
...I may be first to review this new album by my beloved "Norwegian pop legends" a-ha on Ciao (and rightly so, heh-- see my "epic" earlier a-ha reviews) but it's got a fair old bit of coverage in the UK media for its release this week. The general reception seems to have been very good, apparently someone on Radio 2 made it Album of the Week or something, and the release was mentioned in the BBC's 6Music News podcast. Which was the first and only time I'll probably ever listen to one.
I bought this off amazon.co.uk for £8.98, with free next day shipping because I took the Amazon Prime trial.
As usual for a new album I'm reviewing each track as I listen to it for the first time. So I'm going to get on with it because I can't wait to hear it....

The album opens with pleasingly retro synth...
...on my clothes. The AHAs are extracted from passion fruit so the website says, and if you have ever smelled passion fruit, you will know the wonderful scent that it will leave on your skin.
I bought it from QVCuk.com and it was well worth the £23.75 it cost me even if i did have to include the post and packaging on top of that.
First rate product....
Advantages: Analogue, Birthright, A Fine Blue line...everything really Disadvantages: Celice...it get's quite annoying
...This is the first album from A-ha for a while, and i think it is brilliant. I was a fan of their 80's music, who couldn't love 'Take On Me'???!! if you're expecting this album to be like that, you will be pleasantly suprised. There are some real gems on this album, including my favourite the lead song 'Analogue'.
1. Celice - I think this is an unusual song to open, as it is the worst song and most annoying one on the album! If you think the album can only go downhill from this, you are very wrong. it gets better and better!
2. Don't Do Me Any Favours - a nice guitar, catchy song. It has very thought provoking lyrics and is a nice summer tune.
3. Cosy Prisons - This is a nice slow tune, with just a piano and acoustic guitar accompanying Morten Harkets voice. he always hits those high notes perfectly, and this doesnt change in...
Advantages: It's a perfectly competent album. Disadvantages: a-ha are capable of being far more than competent.
...Warning: there's probably going to be gratuitous use of the word "epic" in this review. I just can't help it when it comes to Norwegian pop legends a-ha.
This album was released in 2002, and was the follow up to a-ha's epic comeback album, Minor Earth Major Sky, released in 2000. I haven't listened properly to Lifelines for a good few years, after I lent it to someone who later vanished. So when I saw it recently on the ebay for a couple of quid, I had to have it!
For anyone who hasn't read any of my other a-ha reviews, I should explain that I'm a huge fan. Twenty-odd years after Take on Me, a-ha are still going strong (although they briefly split up in the mid 90s they soon got back together) and still have a large fanbase. Somewhat unfortunately for British fans, they are still huge in Europe, Japan and South America, but...

Review of Lifelines - A-Ha
...At least that was what I thought at the age of 7 in 1985 when Norwegian band A-ha burst on to the pop scene. At that tender age they appealed to me simply because of their catchy songs and good looking singer, but looking back now I can see that they were in fact extremely original, very talented ? oh, and Morten was rather lovely!
A-ha were a three piece band, comprising singer Morten Harket, and musicians Magne (Mags) Furuholmen and Pal Waaktaar. Despite hailing from Norway they sung in English. Due to Morten?s chiselled good looks, they were seen by some as nothing more than a ?boy band? (although boy bands were probably not known by that name in those days, as fortunately there were not enough of them around to warrant their own categorisation!) but they did in fact write and perform their own material and were responsible...
Advantages: Everything! Disadvantages: May be a bit pricey for some.
...feel all fresh, summery and the ?just out of the shower? feeling.
After applying it, your skin feels baby soft and almost feels powdery although it doesn?t leave a powder film to your skin.
It contains AHA?s hence the name and I chose the product purely for that reason and was the only one I could find containing it.
I use an AHA cream on my face and it works wonders on my dry, flaky skin.
According to the ingredients list the AHA?s come from the citric acid it contains. AHA?s can come from various other sources such as sugar. AHA?s help your skin to shed dead skin cells quicker to reveal healthier, glowing skin and for me helps stop any spots and blemishes.
The ingredients also contain lanolin, shea butter and glycerin amongst other long, unprounceable names!
I also have mild eczema and have bumpy upper arms and back which looks...
Advantages: Every Aha song you're likely to know is here. Disadvantages: The focus on the poppier songs gives a rather lopsided representation of their talents.
...November 1991 saw the release of Headlines & Deadlines...The Hits Of A-ha. Comprising all 15 hits, plus one new track Move To Memphis (also released as a single, and another flop), it naturally overlooks any non-single highlights from the four albums to that point.
A-ha's catalogue of hits ranks among the finest of any era or genre, yet the decision to arrange the tracks in non-chronological order was a nisguided one. Opening with Take On Me was logical, but placing Cry Wolf, Touchy!, and You Are The One immediately after it smacked of commercial considerations over artistic concerns. Luckily, CD allows this chosen order to be reprogrammed into a more appropriate sequence.
If you only ever own one Aha CD, this is definitely it. What it lacks in showcasing the more adventurous non-single tracks, it makes up for with a succession...
Advantages: Epic. Mostly a work of genius. Disadvantages: Makes me over-use the word "epic". Moments of odd un-epicness.
...I'm continuing my poke through my record collection with another offering from Norwegian legends a-ha.
Scoundrel Days was a-ha's "difficult" second album. It was a move away from their "synth pop" reputation after Hunting High and Low, and was perhaps a bit of a shock for their teenage fans, but at ten years old I was too young to be disappointed. I loved it. I held long scarves in my hands and danced, with an abandon that can only be described as "gay", around my bedroom to every song on this album, and it's probably the reason why, by the time I was a teenager, I was into rock and metal. Luckily since then I've realised I'm a TERRIBLE dancer.
In a highly unscientific poll (a search through my memory to remember the opinions of fellow a-ha fans over the years) the vast majority of a-ha fans named SD as their favourite ever a-ha...

Review of Scoundrel Days - A-Ha
Advantages: Good selection of tunes. Disadvantages: Covers only part of their long career.
...I have decided to review another a-ha album again much sooner than I planned after I saw this fine Greatest Hits album for a measly £3! In ASDA, if you're curious. It appears that it has been "remaindered" or whatever it is happens to CDs that makes them end up in bargain sections of supermarkets. So, if you don't own this album, and like top-notch popular music, I would strongly recommend you cast your eye over the CD section in your local hypermarket. It was released in 1991, and so the most recent song on there is Move to Memphis. But I'm sure that these songs will be the most familiar to people who aren't already hardcore a-ha fans, and for that reason, it's probably the best place to start if you are at all interested in rediscovering these (far too often neglected) Norwegian pop gods.
If you haven't read any of my a-ha reviews...
