Advantages: Gavin Lee Disadvantages: Uninspired music and lyrics
...Pastiche, the imitation of a literary or musical style for (generally) comic purposes, can be a wonderful thing. The songs of Tom Lehrer and the musical The Boyfriend spring to mind as great examples. Unfortunately, not all pastiche is good pastiche, and 'A Saint She Ain't' certainly ain't good pastiche. Written in a style reminiscent of film musicals of the 1940s and accompanied by piano (possibly two pianos, judging from the sound of the overture), the show features thirteen different songs which echo the list songs, novelty numbers and lovestruck duets remembered fondly from so many Hollywood singalongs. But it's not much fun, when it comes down to it.
Music is by Denis King, lyrics by Dick Vosburgh and the cast of eight features Barry Cryer and Gavin Lee (who went on to create the stage version of Bert in Mary Poppins...
Advantages: All big tunes Disadvantages: Nothing specific
...?Age Ain?t Nothing But A Number? came out in 1994, and was the debut album from the R&B singer, Aaliyah who tragically died at the age of 22 in a plane accident. Her she was just 15, and is joined by R. Kelly, who produces the whole thing.
1. ?Intro?
2. ?Throw Your Hands Up?
To kick the album in just the way which you expect, you have her excite you with the way that she is dropped straight into some funky Hip Hop swinging beats to begin things, and it really makes you take notice, and gives lots of potential for the rest of the thing. She blazes through on this one, and if you hear this, you will want to here what else she comes with on this record.
**Five Stars**
3. ?Back & Forth?
This song is the one which she debuted with , and it is a killer tune, so it deserved all the attention it received as it shows exactly how strong...
Advantages: Ideal read for the forty-somethings! Disadvantages: My childhood is in a history book!!!
...As readers to my reviews will know, I enjoyed watching Life on Mars, and the character of DCI Gene Hunt, played by Philip Glenister. Philip Glenister really enjoyed playing this character and it was a reminder of his early life, watching cop shows like The Sweeney, and also, of listening to the music of the time.
Following on his successes in Life on Mars, and the sequel, Ashes to Ashes, Philip Glenister released a book in time for Christmas, called 'things ain't what they used to be' (excuse the lack of capitalisation, as this is how it is written). The book is a gentle trip down memory lane for Philip, and compares various components to life in the 70's and 80's with their counterparts today. It is cleverly done, with each chapter lasting no more than three pages, but with a heading that gives a hint as to what to expect from...
Advantages: Great production Disadvantages: Little variation
..."Ain't A Damn Thing Changed" is the 1991 release from the East Coast Hip Hop duo of Gregg Nice and Smooth B, Nice & Smooth. It comes two years after their debut album "Nice and Smooth" which managed to grab the attention of many as they came with humourous rhymes to act as a counter-balance to all the newnew a Gangsta rap which had built up on the West Coast of America. These New Yorkers bring fire in this release, showign how the East Coast can make the foundations of the genre relavent now (the year 1991).
1. "Harmonize"
Nice & Smooth blaze through with this one as they show what they have to offer in singing as well as rapping with this opener, they do this by harmonizing some of the lyrics, to contrast with the MCing which they perform. The production to it is very suitable to the subject of this as they display what they are...
Advantages: Big improvement to debut Disadvantages: A couple of weaker ones
...?Flesh of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood? was the second album from the hardcore rapper from New York, DMX. It came out in 1998, and was just as successful as his breakthrough with ?It?s Dark And Hell Is Hot?, which came out only a few months earlier.
1. "My N***as" (Intro)
2. "Bring Your Whole Crew"
The first real musical track on the album has him kicking us off with a big one to get you excited as he gets right to and flows on top of some beats to show that he is doing something very different on this album as he builds it up on full rhymes, a poetic technique used more in the Hip Hop tunes which you are expected to rap along to, and these tend to be the club ones. When you compare it to the X of the first album, it appears to be a fair change.
**Four Stars**
3. ?Pac Man? (Lude)
4. ?Ain?t No Way?
This was one of the tracks...
Advantages: Good quality sound; good performances Disadvantages: Studer's occasional pitch problems; slightly overdone accent
...and means that as the drama builds towards the end of the opera she doesn't become overpowered by the orchestra as so many lighter voices would in this role. Her two arias are beautifully sung: 'Ain't it a Pretty Night' is such a wonderfully shimmering and beautiful piece of music, revealing Susannah's loyalty and love for the place where she's grown up, as well as her intense desire to know what lies beyond the mountains and to learn how others live. It builds to such a wonderful climax and is utterly exhilarating to listen to. 'The Trees on the Mountain' is a poignantly sad Appalachian style folk song which comes later in the opera, providing a welcome break from the drama around it. My disappointment with Studer is that there are numerous occasions on this recording where she sings flat which is a real disappointment for me.

Advantages: Classic material Disadvantages: Little variation
...attracted to this album, and for this reason I felt as though the whole thing sounded a lot more comfortable to me, and it allows you to get into the true feelings of the track as it is light-hearted work and you have t be on their level to accept it.
**Three Stars**
9. ?Shake A Leg?
This one has the tempo dramatically lifted, and it forces you in as they give you support with the way that they go about composing the thing in such a fun and inviting manner. I can?t see any reason why someone couldn?t get down to this one as its energy is just to much, and makes you want them to succeed with it.
**Three Stars**
10. ?Rock And Roll Ain?t Noise Pollution?
Ending the album off, you have a track with a simple message , and of course they are forced to back up this opinion and speak upon how Rock and Roll is an essential part of life, and so...
Advantages: The Music, The Voice, The Talent, The Producer...Everything Disadvantages: None.
...and was a huge hit in the states. The song also has a rap, which R. Kelly does. It definitely adds an edge to the song. The video to this song was also very street and was definitely perfect for the song.
AGE AINT NOTHING BUT A NUMBER – “throwing down ain't nothing but a thang” A much slower song which is definitely a song to chill out to. Its got great lyrics and the beats are soft and very enjoyable to listen to. I absolutely love the intro. Definitely a classic!
DOWN WITH THE CLIQUE – “let me hear you say (I'm down wit it)” This song is just so cool. I love the beats and the rap on top of Aaliyah’s singing adds such an edge it just sounds so chill out!
AT YOUR BEST (YOU ARE LOVE) – “Confusion can give way to doubt” This song is so slow and sultry. Its just so relaxing, it...
...distinct from the formulated style coming out of Nashville at the time when most artists used the same roster of backing musicians. This memorable riff provides a great opening salvo for this album, just as it did for the debut album it first appeared on. This is still very much in the Nashville vein but hints at the rebellion that was to follow as Earle pushed the boundaries of his chosen field until he emerged as a fully fledged rocker. Someday follows providing a change of direction, starting with its sparse opening and its harsh story of dead-end poor communities and the dreams of those caught within them.
