'99 R1 rocks the road for me!
Advantages: Quick, Fast, exciting to ride and stylish.. as well as Japanese and reliable!
Disadvantages: Twitchy front end on earlier models, needs stearing damper.
...and wavy disks front and back (for show as well as for performance)! :-)
All together I rate the R1 a top bike, I have owned a GS500E, GSF Bandit1200 (streetfightered), GSXR750, and now my R1 which although very different from the Bandit etc is a very enjoyable bike to ride. It turns heads and ears with the Scorpion exhaust can I have fitted and I plan on keeping hold of it for some time to come.
As for your passenger if you have one, not the comfiest ride at all. My girlfriend is small but it hurts her back to lean forward and hold on to me so we can't go long distances without stopping. I find it hard on the wrists if I haven't ridden for a while but you get used to it the more you ride it (it isn't built for comfort at the end of the day is it).
As for fuel consumption... not sure as I open the throttle far too much to get the most...

2006 Yamaha R1- quickest way from A to B
Advantages: Wonderfully refined sportsbike, Looks ace, great comfort for a sportsbike
Disadvantages: Desirability, likelihood of theft, high insurance group
.... What have I got myself in for? Is this bike such a handful?
The bike to be mine for the weekend is an immaculate, 06 plate R1 with a few thousand on the clock. As we're going over the controls, alarm etc, the owner fires up the engine, and the bike gurgles into life. I almost can't believe it's in standard trim; the sound from the exhaust is properly loud, even at idle - throaty and raw, an indication of the state of tune of the engine. I climb aboard and get underway becoming familiarised with the controls throttle and brake and mindful of the wise words from the bike shop owner. I take it easy back home.
As I ride back to my house to saddle up with weekend kit, I get a taste of city riding. The riding position is sportier than my '02 CBR600F, but not horrendous. The bars are lower but not too far away and the pegs not too high. It...

ATS - Exhaustingly Good
Advantages: Fast Service, Courteous Service
Disadvantages: Garages will differ around the UK
...**Please note the following ATS-Euromaster review is based around the service and products received from the ATS Garage in Newbury, Berkshire.**
*Personal Background*
Earlier on this week I noticed my exhaust was producing a rather unique sounding boy racer noise, complete with a slight rattling of my exhaust box, so decided immediate action was required as I was due in Cardiff the following day. I decided to take my Citroen Saxo (51 reg.) to the local Kick Fit dealers as they had always provided a reputable service in the past, however after an initial free inspection they advised me that I required 3 new parts for my exhaust, an Intermediate Pipe, an Intermediate Silencer Box and a Rear Silencer Box.
However after consulting their catalogue of parts I was told the intermediate parts I needed were not obtainable from their...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1
Advantages: Lens, viewfinder, picture quality
Disadvantages: Big, heavy, limited zoom, discontinued but still available
...My experience over 2 years with my DSC-R1 has been almost universally favourable, so much so that I bought a second one as a spare. 90% of the time I use it for landscape and architectural photos where that superb distortion-free 24-120mm zoom lens makes me glad I did not buy a DSLR. I am occasionally asked to photograph gymkhanas, dressage events and find though that the electronic viewfinder is rather slow for following rapid movement.
A pity this review will be no use to anyone because the camera has long been discontinued ( too big, too heavy, not enough zoom...).
I got the feeling that this might be the first of a range of all-electronic interchangeable lens cameras, doing away with those horrid clanking mirrors and pokey viewfinders on the then current DSLRs. (I would not be surprised to find that there was a new lens mount...

2002 fuel injected R1, relatively cheap to run
Advantages: Cheap(ish) running costs, looks fantastic, fast
Disadvantages: sometimes can be too quick
...I've had my 2002 fuel injected R1 (5PW model) for a year now. Have had CBR6's for 10years previously, so was a bit worried about spending loads on tyres/petrol/insurance ect.
1st nice suprise was how cheap insurance is, i only pay £120 a year. I had been thinking in the range of £250-300, so was pleasantly suprised.
2nd suprise was fuel economy, around 50mpg on commuting, 40mpg on fast weekend hacks, and still returns over 30mpg on trackdays, so it comparable with my CBR600's.
3rd, tyres. It came with Pirelle Super Corsa's when i got it, and 4000 miles later, theres still life in them yet. I hope to get another trackday out of them before i replace them, and they may see 4500 miles. Obviously, with something like Michelin Pilot Powers, i reckon i will get 5-6000 miles out of a set.
So, really, its suprisingly cheap to run. I...

Ebley tyres and exhaust
Advantages: cheap and great service
Disadvantages: none
...Having had the exhaust on the car go and tying it up with string as you do, we had to go and get a new one.
We telephoned around and you would not believe the difference in price. We were limited as to how far we could drive with it tied up so could not go to a large town and had to make do with Cirencester and a choice of three places.
At Kwik fit we were quoted at "just over £100" and at ATS they said it will be £110 plus £15 if the manifold bolts and springs are hard to get off - now you can buy these in places like Halfords for £6.00.
Then we telephoned the cheapest which was Ebley. They said £75.00.
On arrival there we found that they had to send for it from their other branch and this would take an hour. But, if we wanted to have a look around the town they would drive us there and pick us up. Now that is service.
Also...

Tyred? Exhausted? Avoid Kwik Fit! *UPDATED*
Advantages: Brake parts insured for life of car
Disadvantages: Very poor workmanship
...A few weeks ago, whilst driving to work, I heard a loud screeching noise. My first reaction was that it was the car in front, but as he turned off at the next exit, I realised that it was in fact my car ! As I was just about at work, I decided to carry on with extreme caution.
When I finished, I took my car straight to my local Kwik Fit in Waterlooville at 1pm on a Saturday afternoon - I know it's probably one of their busiest times, and a time I would normally avoid, however I had no choice. Due to the fact I had been working that morning, and had a 5am start the following day, I really needed to get this done quickly.
In the past, Kwik Fit has had quite a tarnished record - following investigatve reports like those seen on "Watchdog" where customers were getting ripped off. I quickly checked the reviews here on Ciao and, apart from...

Exhausted I sure am now
Advantages: nil
Disadvantages: not honest
...ATS well advertised, yes, a large company, yes, good reputation, reliable and honest? Answer NO.
Well that is my humble opinion. I recently owned a small citroen AX motor car and the exhaust started to corrode, blow me I thought, the exhaust was only fitted by ATS in High Wycombe less than four months ago! So, off I went with receipt back to ATS where, on the ramp I noticed that the exhaust had completely cracked in half under the manifold area. Unusual I thought, must have had a bad exhaust, maybe made on a Friday night. Anyway, I went for a walk around the shops while the fitter, who I should add was the same fitter who fitted the complete new one four months earlier, replaced the exhaust parts for a new one again.
Off I go, but to my surprise, about one month later it blows again, can't believe my bad luck, two faulty exhausts! How...

Exhaust for my old banger-no problem
Advantages: Great friendly service. Great price.Brilliant
Disadvantages: None for me.
...Two weeks ago my old but well loved Rover 6 2.3 Honda engine decided it was time to blow its exhaust. Now on the sunny Isle of Sheppey you aint got much choice about where to go unless you have lived here for years and have insider knowledge.Everything is at Sheerness. I knew that there was a Quik Fit there as I pass it when I go to Tesco's.
I phoned them in the morning at about 9.30 on my day off from work. The guy on the other end of the phone quoted me a price for bothe the front end and the back of the exhaust, just in case it had all blown. He said to bring the car up and they would check it out. If they had an exhaust in stock they would fit it straight away, if not, they would get one in.
I got up there by around 10.45. They checked under the car and let me have a look. It was the rear silencer that had blown.
They...

Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo LS-W2.0TGL/R1
Advantages: Very fast, high capacity.
Disadvantages: Pricey, may be outlived by long-life Blu-ray discs.
.../100/1000 megabit compatible), an on/off switch (which also has an auto setting) and a rather curious, possibly James Brown inspired "Func" button. There's also a ghettoblaster style mains socket and a 40-50mm fan grill. The fan is a little bit noisy but you wouldn't notice it in our server room. It's also drowned out by the sound of the drives when their in operation. There's also a wonderful silver panel on the front of the unit with ultra-low profile status indicators for power and network.
A quick look under the hood reveals two Hitachi deskstar 1TB drives which are mounted at the front of the case. This is a joy to see as Hitachi drives are my personal favourites after a review I saw showed they were almost on a par with Western Digitals Raptors in terms of speed, but with decent capacity and a lower price tag. The drives are linked by a single...
