2006 Yamaha R1- quickest way from A to B

Advantages: Wonderfully refined sportsbike, Looks ace, great comfort for a sportsbike
Disadvantages: Desirability, likelihood of theft, high insurance group

.... What have I got myself in for? Is this bike such a handful? The bike to be mine for the weekend is an immaculate, 06 plate R1 with a few thousand on the clock. As we're going over the controls, alarm etc, the owner fires up the engine, and the bike gurgles into life. I almost can't believe it's in standard trim; the sound from the exhaust is properly loud, even at idle - throaty and raw, an indication of the state of tune of the engine. I climb aboard and get underway becoming familiarised with the controls throttle and brake and mindful of the wise words from the bike shop owner. I take it easy back home. As I ride back to my house to saddle up with weekend kit, I get a taste of city riding. The riding position is sportier than my '02 CBR600F, but not horrendous. The bars are lower but not too far away and the pegs not too high. It...

'99 R1 rocks the road for me!

Advantages: Quick, Fast, exciting to ride and stylish.. as well as Japanese and reliable!
Disadvantages: Twitchy front end on earlier models, needs stearing damper.

...I own a 1999 Yamaha YZF-R1 (1000cc) in V&M custom race colours (Red/Yellow flames and sponsors). I bought the bike just short of two years ago for approx £4,000 from a dealer. The bike had only done 4,500 dry miles (genuine as a good friend knows the previous owner) and the bike was/is in mint condition. It had been pampered, the previous owner is pretty well off and used this custom painted R1 as a show off machine more than anything, so straight away I knew I was on to a good deal as a lot of R1's have been thrashed and trashed since they are such a nutters tool! This model of R1 is not fuel injected but carbs, however my father does have the 06 fuel injected model and after a week or so standing in the garage and even after cold weather both bikes start first time, no hassle be it carbs or fuel injection! The insurance can...

2002 fuel injected R1, relatively cheap to run

Advantages: Cheap(ish) running costs, looks fantastic, fast
Disadvantages: sometimes can be too quick

...I've had my 2002 fuel injected R1 (5PW model) for a year now. Have had CBR6's for 10years previously, so was a bit worried about spending loads on tyres/petrol/insurance ect. 1st nice suprise was how cheap insurance is, i only pay £120 a year. I had been thinking in the range of £250-300, so was pleasantly suprised. 2nd suprise was fuel economy, around 50mpg on commuting, 40mpg on fast weekend hacks, and still returns over 30mpg on trackdays, so it comparable with my CBR600's. 3rd, tyres. It came with Pirelle Super Corsa's when i got it, and 4000 miles later, theres still life in them yet. I hope to get another trackday out of them before i replace them, and they may see 4500 miles. Obviously, with something like Michelin Pilot Powers, i reckon i will get 5-6000 miles out of a set. So, really, its suprisingly cheap to run. I...

Diamond review  Can girls really ride motorbikes?

Advantages: Faster than a speeding bullet
Disadvantages: Where do I put me socks?

...doing with a high performance motorcycle? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Riding it fast usually! I own a Yamaha R1 1000cc Supersport motorbike. This bike tops out at 179mph and has enough acceleration to obliterate my bra at that kind of speed (should I have been wearing nothing else upon opening up the throttle). I know about knees in the breeze but rippling nipples would be quite something else. The bike is a 2004 model with the under seat twin exhausts and it is RED. The most popular colour for the new model instead of the bland silver / black version, or the "seen it all before" blue and white version. The red is not the normal run of the mill red of course; it's more a metallic deep red. Very sexy, but doesn't quite go with any set of leathers out there which incorporate red, as red to...

The Yamaha Blaster - The small contender

Advantages: Lightweight, powerful 200cc two-stroke motor, proven over time
Disadvantages: Wheel base and width cause instability in some situations.

...valves that ensures good throttle response for smoother acceleration and a broad, hard-hitting power band to make this little quad a very rideable machine! A super reliable CDI type ignition provides many years of faultless running as I have experienced. Although for most applications i would recommend to leave the engine in standard format , there are a whole host of aftermarket options to increase the performance of this great powerplant. A great place to start modifcations, if you are that way inclined, is a tuned exhaust pipe which is offered by many manufacturers, a higher flow air filter and an adjustment in carbration to suit these changes. This is a recent upgrade that i have done myself and wow am i pleased with improvment! Would recommend to any Yamaha Blaster users once they have mastered whats on offer from stock trim...

ATS - Exhaustingly Good

Advantages: Fast Service, Courteous Service
Disadvantages: Garages will differ around the UK

...**Please note the following ATS-Euromaster review is based around the service and products received from the ATS Garage in Newbury, Berkshire.** *Personal Background* Earlier on this week I noticed my exhaust was producing a rather unique sounding boy racer noise, complete with a slight rattling of my exhaust box, so decided immediate action was required as I was due in Cardiff the following day. I decided to take my Citroen Saxo (51 reg.) to the local Kick Fit dealers as they had always provided a reputable service in the past, however after an initial free inspection they advised me that I required 3 new parts for my exhaust, an Intermediate Pipe, an Intermediate Silencer Box and a Rear Silencer Box. However after consulting their catalogue of parts I was told the intermediate parts I needed were not obtainable from their...

Yamaha Stage Custom Drumkit

Advantages: GREAT DRUM KIT 4 OUTSTANDING PRICE!
Disadvantages: NONE?

...This Drum kit is amazing. If your a beginer or even really good this drum kit will suit you this kit is awsome if your looking for a reasonibly priced drum kit this is for you. I bought this kit about 2 years ago ive only made 3 adjustments like putting remo pinstripe skins on it and buying anew cymbal pack and buyong a mapex double bass pedal but thats what ive done this is a great kit and i would recomend this product to nearly anyone. The most affordable all-birch Yamaha drumset ever! An incredible value, the legendary tone of an all-birch Yamaha drumset is now available in the Stage Custom series. The low fundamental and warm tone of Yamaha's birch drums have been the top choice of drummers for over 30 years. The Stage Custom Birch series is great for the beginner or the working professional. The staggered diagonal seam allows us to...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1

Advantages: Lens, viewfinder, picture quality
Disadvantages: Big, heavy, limited zoom, discontinued but still available

...My experience over 2 years with my DSC-R1 has been almost universally favourable, so much so that I bought a second one as a spare. 90% of the time I use it for landscape and architectural photos where that superb distortion-free 24-120mm zoom lens makes me glad I did not buy a DSLR. I am occasionally asked to photograph gymkhanas, dressage events and find though that the electronic viewfinder is rather slow for following rapid movement. A pity this review will be no use to anyone because the camera has long been discontinued ( too big, too heavy, not enough zoom...). I got the feeling that this might be the first of a range of all-electronic interchangeable lens cameras, doing away with those horrid clanking mirrors and pokey viewfinders on the then current DSLRs. (I would not be surprised to find that there was a new lens mount...

Yamaha CP300 Stage PIano

Advantages: reasonable price, reasonable sound, portable, built-in amplification & speakers, USB port
Disadvantages: no music rest supplied, a few dodgy-sounding notes around D4

...Other than from an economic angle, I was never a fan of Yamaha acoustic pianos. So back in the 1980s it came as no surprise when their digital instruments failed to impress me. In my opinion Yamaha pianos sounded too 'wooden' at the top end. They had none of the 'singing' tones common to European pianos like Blüthner, Bösendorfer or Bechstein. However, after moving into an apartment in 1996 I was obliged to get a piano that took cans and chose a Technics PR900, which in my view was the nearest thing to an acoustic piano. It sounded like some of the best German pianos I had played. Early incarnations of this model had a very annoying background 'static', only noticeable when the piano was silent. By 1998 this static had been fixed by Technics. But in 1996 it was driving me so crazy that I sent the PR900 back to the store and got...

Ebley tyres and exhaust

Advantages: cheap and great service
Disadvantages: none

...Having had the exhaust on the car go and tying it up with string as you do, we had to go and get a new one. We telephoned around and you would not believe the difference in price. We were limited as to how far we could drive with it tied up so could not go to a large town and had to make do with Cirencester and a choice of three places. At Kwik fit we were quoted at "just over £100" and at ATS they said it will be £110 plus £15 if the manifold bolts and springs are hard to get off - now you can buy these in places like Halfords for £6.00. Then we telephoned the cheapest which was Ebley. They said £75.00. On arrival there we found that they had to send for it from their other branch and this would take an hour. But, if we wanted to have a look around the town they would drive us there and pick us up. Now that is service. Also...
