~ A Touch of the Memoirs~
Advantages: Charming, warm , humorous
Disadvantages: None for me
...Born on the 2nd May 1949 to Alan and Bessie Titchmarsh, Alan Jnr grew up in Ilkley, his father was a plumber and part time fireman whilst his mother stayed at home looking after the house, cooking, cleaning and making clothes (even coats) for herself and her son. The family of 3 became 4 when his sister Kath was born some 4 ½ years later.
Synopsis
This book tells the story of his somewhat idyllic childhood growing up in the 1950's, he takes us back with fond memories to what he called his playground at the foot of Ilkley Moor, fishing for minnows with jam jars in the River Wharfe, bird watching and discovering what was to be his first love Nature.
He grew up not only with his immediate family but also a generous supply of aunts, uncles and two sets of grandparents.
He remembers his childhood as being one of innocence...

Devon Wild Life
Advantages: Entertaining light read with fast plot.
Disadvantages: Fast plot sometimes lacks depth.
...- The Author -
The author, Alan Titchmarsh started his working life as a gardener, and has now written fiction books and autobiographies, as well as those aimed at gardeners.
He is also a well-known TV personality, noted especially for his gardening and natural world programmes, but has also been associated with many other types of programmes.
- Background to the Plot ?
The plot is about a man, now living in Australia, who inherits an estate in Devon when his father dies.
The son, Kit Lavery, at first thinks that he will come back to Devon to settle his father?s affairs, sell the estate as quickly as he can and then resume his life in Australia.
When he returns to his childhood home, his loyalties become split though. The conservation work that his father did on his own land, bringing back or keeping rare species...

Illegal Money?
Advantages: Good light read with humour, crime and romance.
Disadvantages: You may not want a light read.
...seem to want to do something more exciting than they are currently doing. The highlight of some weeks seems to be their meeting in the local pub to play dominoes. Then excitement does come their way. More than they were expecting. Perhaps that will cure them of being scared to be just content.
I liked and could identify with the three main characters. I've no doubt that these were based on the personal experiences of the aged 50+ author and his friends. (Alan Titchmarsh was born in 1949.) Some of the other characters were a little under-developed, but adequate for me to enjoy the plot.
At the beginning of each of the 26 chapters there is a quote from a diverse range of sources such as the Koran to Woody Allen. For those who want some extra brain stimulation, I leave it to you to find out how theses connect to the plot. One relevant...

Man and boy
Advantages: Heartwarming easy read , gentle style with some quirky and funny moments .
Disadvantages: May be dull to some .
...Lately I have been reading ?Nobbut A Lad ? by Alan Titchmarsh .I found it an unpretentious read which flowed along at a nice gentle pace . Throughout the book I got the feeling that each chapter was written as honestly and accurately , as memory will allow. I found the beginning quite startling as , reading many of the early chapters rang so true with much of my early life . However on the whole the similarities were simply because , I was born within a few years of Alan ,and I was brought up in Yorkshire also . Fair enough mine was a city childhood , but we regularly visited family who lived near Skipton ,so I found I could relate to his stories about life in the West Riding of Yorkshire ,during the 1950's .
If you have never heard of Alan Titchmarsh here's a little information . Most English people became familiar with him when he...

How to be a gardener
Advantages: fantastic book from first principles to beyond
Disadvantages: None
...In my opinion, this is probably one of the best gardening books available. It is written by Alan Titchmarsh, who is a nice, decent ordinary sort of bloke? who just happens to be one of the best gardeners in the United Kingdom.
You'll probably have seen Alan on Gardener's World. I mean, Monty Don is a good chap and all, but it's never quite been the same since Alan left the programme, in my opinion. You could also have seen Alan on Groundforce and several other none gardening programmes and his memorable A Year At Kew.
The book How To Be a gardener accompanied the highly acclaimed BBC TV programme of the same name. But the book (it comes in two parts, or as one volume, depending on the edition you buy) is a perfect stand alone publication. Meaning that you can learn everything you need about the basics of gardening (and some more...

FREE DVDs
Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review
...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them.
∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊
Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Alan Who?
Advantages: It's different to most music!
Disadvantages: Not everyones cup of tea.
...Alan Jackson is a folk and country singer from Georgia. His music is mainly diddley-dee and all weird guitars and country genres. This isn't really the sort of music that i would like but because my dad bought it i sort of got hooked.
This sort of music is also associated with NASCAR in America.
~~Gone Country~~
This song is fairly upbeat, and its about Alan's girlfriend and about the story of how she 'went country' and went back to her roots. Alan also says in the song thats its his last chance which could indicate many reasons for that line... he wants to tell her he loves her?
~~Drive (For Daddy Gene)
This song is rather annoying and slow in the verses but more lively in the chorus. Alan explains his experiences when his ''daddy'' let him drive. He describes the car in the song and what he can see when hes driving. ''It was...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54
Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.
...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied.
On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Poor Show Peter Alan!
Advantages: Local to most people, NAEA Members
Disadvantages: Work for the buyer, not the seller
...This is from a perspective of a seller.
6 years ago, I bought my first house with Peter Alan, being 18 and not being very worldly, I thought their service was alright, lack of communication was my only real gripe with them.
After I moved in, I watched as over the years, Peter Alan boards were going up and having sold slips on them relatively quickly, so when the time came to sell, Peter Alan was an obvious choice, my husband is also an estate agent but markets in a different part of town and he agreed Peter Alan would be the logical choice to sell the house, with their 'local expertise' & they are members of the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), which not all estate agents are members of.
I looked up my local branch, phoned and explained I had bought my house through them & now I would like to sell through them...
