Alba DVD 62 - You get what you pay for...

Advantages: Cheap, small, easy to use
Disadvantages: Over time stops playing recorded discs

...I purchased a Alba DVD62XI from Argos about a year ago as I wanted a cheap DVD player than played recorded DVDs. This is the cheapest I could find (based on other reviews that it played copied discs). The DVD player worked fine for about 3 or 4 months before I started having issues. After that time the DVD player began skipping and lost the ability to read recorded discs. Nothing had happened in that time (The player had not been dropped or even moved), so I am still baffled to this day as to why it happened. I know someone else who has the exact same player and they have had the same issues, although it took a little bit longer to happen. In conclusion - The DVD player is still playing normal DVD's now (2 years down the line), but If you are looking for a cheap DVD player that plays recorded discs (as I was), spend a little bit...

The image it produces shouldn't be expected by the buyer to be excellent, however, it is viewable and understandable. The DVD player doesn't effect the movies sound quality and doesn't have as many features on as other more expensive DVD players however, it does it's job. A DVD player is for playing DVD's and watching movies on your television. Although it has the ability to play a cd, a DVD player is not a cd player and the buyer should not expect any DVD players to play a cd. It's in the name what it plays. Despite this however the player has actually been on the market for a couple of years. ...After many years of use my trusted DVD player finally gave up the ghost, not surprising really seeing the amount of daily abuse it received. So, not wanting to be without my main source of entertainment for long, I decided to buy a cheap DVD player as an interim measure until I had the time to research the purchase of a more substantial machine. With the price of a low range DVD player not being much more than a newly released DVD itself, I didn't object to the small expenditure as long as it worked properly. So having browsed through the Argos catalogue, I selected a very cheap model made by BUSH and went about purchasing it. When my DVD player arrived at the counter, I was surprised to see the word ALBA on the side and after questioning this; I was informed that the ALBA and BUSH machines were in fact identical. ...There is one good thing you can say about the Alba DVD45- it's cheap. And it does play DVD's and music CD's, which is what it's designed to do. However, as it gets warmer the DVD's tend to freeze for no apparent reason (what we like to call the dramatic pause). This will usually happen toward the end of the film, at some crucial moment. There seems to be no way of getting it started yet, you just have to wait. The warmer the player gets the more this happens so if you are watching 2 or more films in a row, you can expect them to be plagued wiht dramatic pauses. Also, it takes a while to load the DVD in the first place, and sometimes seems not to work at all. The picture quality is good, not spectactular (although I guess this is also related to the TV that you are using with it) Sound is fairly ordinary. It is very easy...

Cheapest Multi Region DVD around

...I am well into technology and gadgets, but don’t have a lot of money to spend on them, so to me this product was ideal. As DVD players go the ALBA DVD-103 is certainly not the best, but it is one of the cheapest on the market at the moment. However just because it is not the best does not mean it is no good. This DVD player has the features that I need and the quality is pretty good too. The DVD player itself is a big silver box, this is lucky as we had to replace our video recently and that is also a silver box so it does not look out of place on my technology tower. The buttons are a bit on the big side and they are all square, no soft round edges here. When it is switched on there is a bright LCD display that shows the track and the timer a bit like a CD player display. This all makes the box look a bit on the cheep...
