The Royal Albion Hotel, Brighton

Advantages: great location, cheap, nice rooms, excellent food
Disadvantages: no parking, quite dated

...Introduction to the hotel: The Royal Albion Hotel was built in 1826 and is situated in a fantastic location opposite Brighton pier. It is a three star hotel and has 186 guest rooms offering views of Brighton beach or the town centre. My experience of the hotel: I spent one night in the hotel in January of this year and for a three star hotel I was quite impressed. I and my girlfriend booked a double room for £55 and it was a spacious room with a four poster bed, couch, satellite television, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and a lovely modern bathroom with a Jacuzzi bath. When we checked in the hotel staff asked us if we would like to upgrade to a room with a Jacuzzi batch for £10, we said no, but were a bit intrigued to find one anyways - they had obviously given our room away and were trying to get the extra £10 out...

Shamble, Hotel Royal Albion

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Everything

...Having stayed at the Royal Albion Brighton for two nights at £288 I agree it would have been similar staying at a local hostel and far cheaper. The room was discusting, shabby, dusty and dirty and also smelled of sick and far long over due for a redeck with wall paper pealing off in various places, the bed cover was only fit for a dog basket. I paid the extra for a sea view room and balcony which was very good, though double glazing should be a must as it was right over the busy highway and walkway for the seafront. The furniture is very dated so dont go by the glossy photo in the add as this was probably taken 20 years ago. The walls are waifer thin as you can here every thing tha goes on, I mean everything! Most of the staff are foreign though that not a problem however try asking for finer details such as were a cash point...

You are my Albion, my only Albion...

Advantages: Bryan Robson, Zoltan Gera, The badge, the loyal fans
Disadvantages: Andy Johnson, the ground is old and needs a paint job, glory-hunting fans

...- THE CLUB - West Bromwich Albion were formed in 1878, but they didn't call themselves West Bromwich Albion, no. They called themselves the West Bromwich Strollers. Which is a far cry from the Strollers! Our first 'ground' was Bunns Field, which I suppose is a bit different to our ground, the Hawthorns. Although I am not sure how better it is! Anyway, we'll talk more of the grounds later. We first won the F.A. Cup in 1888, beating Preston North End 2-1. Unfortunately, in the same cup, they knocked us out in the Semi's the following year! We've had seasons, going up, going down, but last season saw us pull off the Great Escape. The only football team EVER to be bottom of the league at Christmas and to stay up. - THE GROUNDS - As I mentioned earlier, our first ground was Bunn Fields, which we moved to in 1881. In 1882, we moved...

Down In Albion

Advantages: encouraging continuation of a diverse form of indie/alternative
Disadvantages: tough cookie to crack

...This album is quite simply an ironic insight into what people sound like when they are writing and performing music simply for the personal satisfaction, and for the satisfaction of the many adoring fans who wish to thrust themselves 'pon Pete Doherty and his band of merry men: "Down In Albion" uses an intelegant mix of quiet and subtle songs such as "merry go round" and "loyalty song", along with stark and harsh tones that really put some punch into the CD, almost to a predicatble levle, in order to create some auidiable aesthetics, from this principle, there are 2 elements of this album that really make it stand out: 1) the lyrial content. Those who were fans of The Libertines will know Pete Doherty is a man who posesses a way with words, and this is demonstrated, with no exception, in "Down In Albion". This is obviously only...

Review of Babyshambles - Down in Albion

Down in Albion

Advantages: F*** Forever, The 32nd of December, Killamangiro, Albion
Disadvantages: Back from The Dead, Merry go Round

...A great listen for any Doherty fan. But if it's The Libertines your looking for this may not be for you. Whilst theres no doubt that Pete Doherty is one of the great musical talents of this generation at times whilst listening to the album theres a feeling that somethings missing, in the form of Doherty's former Libertine partner Carl Barat. The album at times sounds unfinished and rough, but this is part of the charm in the same sort of way 'Up The Bracket' was. One critisism of the album is that there are too many tracks, some of which could have been scrapped to form a much more complete album. Tracks such as 'Merry go Round' and 'Back from the Dead' off nothing, in comparison to the already hit anthems of 'F*** Forever' and 'Killimangiro' Overall 'Down In Albion' will never be a true classic but deffinatly worth a listen, even...

Great base in Brighton

Advantages: Location, price
Disadvantages: Parking, needs updating

...We've just got back from a couple of nights stay at The Royal Albion in Brighton. We love going down to Brighton and had a long weekend off work together so thought we'd have a look to see if we could get a cheap couple of nights. We went on Travelsupermarket.com which showed us this hotel through lastminute.com at £86 for two nights (Sun & Mon) including breakfast and a free bottle of wine, and knowing it's location we booked straight away. My boyfriend had stayed here a few years ago so we knew we weren't going to be getting luxury, but as long as it's clean I'm happy. The hotel has 186 bedrooms from single rooms to family rooms, and mini-suites for business guests. It has smoking and non-smoking rooms and disabled friendly ones too. It is a regency style building and could look very grand but it needs a bit of a touch up...

Buzzing Brighton

Advantages: Central Location
Disadvantages: Better Hotels About

...Recently syaing in the Royal Albion hotel on business i found the hotel to be relatively okay. Arriving at the hotel, there is one problem that hits you, no parking, the nearest NCP is ten minutes walk away and cost £30 for three days and when you are lugging overnight gear and everything it is a bit of a trek. The hotel itself is very old fashioned however very clean too. The room was pleasant, however very dull as their was not much light as there was a small window in the downstairs area. The room had an upstairs section which was very bright, with living area and a larger television. Bathroom was nice, spa bath made it easy to relax whilst in the room, maids cleaned everyday and was relatively satisfactory. The bar area was spacious and easy to get served. Large windows overlooked the pier, but they did look like they...

Aristotle, Aristotle

Advantages: Funny, energetic, funny, erudite, funny, vital, funny, you're getting my drift, right?
Disadvantages: Some over-long descriptive paragraphs, one dodgy subplot resolution, anachronism may not be for you.

..."Kings of Albion is a work of fiction that purports to be set in the fifteenth century. Readers bothered by anachronisms and inaccuracies are asked first of all to consider whether or not these may have been intentional. If they are still bothered then I must ask them to accept that the whole thing could have happened in an alternative solar system on the other side of the universe. Nevertheless, I did read around a bit." Ha. Well, I think that is funny, anyway. So says Julian Rathbone in the introduction to his novel, Kings of Albion. In it, a party of sophisticated, cultured fifteenth century Easterners in search of a prince's long-lost brother stumble slap-bang into the middle of the Wars of the Roses. Ali, traveller and fifteenth century Del Boy, Uma, hedonist and searcher of pure experience and Prince Harihara, royal scion...
