A great monument

Advantages: Nice
Disadvantages: Anyone

...and to have a control of the goods that were taken into the city. There were some gates at this wall. The king Philip the Third married to the Princess Margarita from Austria, thus he decided to build a monumental gate to commemorate the marriage. It was called "Puerta de Alcalá" (Alcalá´s Gate), due to it had been built in the road that finished in Alcalá de Henares, nowadays declared World Heritage City by UNESCO. As Carlos the Third, also known as "the best Major of Madrid" did not like the design, he ordered to demolish the gate, and another gate, bigger and nicer was built following the planes of Francesco Sabatini, the favourite architect of the King. This gate that has become a symbol of Madrid was finished in 1778. This gate joins culture and history. May be when you are in front of the gate you think "oh, these Spanish people are...

Madrid begining with his door...

Advantages: Meet madrid!
Disadvantages: Very expensive zone...

...Hi everybody! Yesterday i was walking for my city, when I thought to writte you about this fantastic place... La puerta de Alcalá... *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- HISTORY *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- La puerta de alcalá was builded for the King CARLOS III, (called the best Madrid's mayor) and designed for Sabatini at the year 1778. The first Puerta de Alcalá was really used as door, but the actually monument is the builded by Carlos III, and is only a conmemorative monument. The style of this monument is neoclassic. It has three archs and two doors. And the materials are Spanish Granite and marble. *-*-*-*-*-*-* WHERE IS IT? *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* It's at independence square (Plaza de la independencia) on front of Retiro's garden, a very turistic zone of our city... Near it's Arqueological museum, a very interesting place for visit...

My Hyde Park in Madrid

Advantages: For me, that is located in Madrid
Disadvantages: For you, that is located in Madrid

...?El Retiro? or ?El Buen Retiro? is to Madrid, like Hyde Park is to London and Central Park to New York. It is a big park in the heart of the town. It was built during the kingdom of Felipe IVth, but it was in the time of Carlos the IIIrd when people was allowed to visit but in a very restricted way. With the First Republic the park was property of the town, for enjoyment of all its inhabitants. You can reach it by metro ?Retiro? or by buses, with numbers 1, 2, 202, 9, 15, 20, 28 and it is surrounded bay Alcala, O?Donnell, Alfonso XII streets. The main entrance is in Plaza de la Independencia just in front of the ?Puerta de Alcalá? and five minute walking you reach the pool with the monument erected in memorial of Alfonso XII. You can rent a boat, or visit the ?Crystal Palace? that remember a special cage of birds but now is...

A nightmare in Madrid

Advantages: -----
Disadvantages: ------

...the hospitals, going out to the streets to donate blood, to help, to do whatever it was in their hands which, sadly, wasn't much. Alcala de Henares was the place from where the trains left. That's my city, that's where I live, where I know hundreds of people, where I've grown... The trains that were bombed are the trains where I've been going all my life, the ones I got to go to school, the ones my friends, my dad, my cousins get every morning to go to their universities and jobs. This is terrible. I hope you can understand what this means for us, Spanish people. Now, it's not that important if it was ETA or a Islamic group. It doesn't matter right now. It's all terrorism, and as terrorism, something that has to be condemned and that never can be justified because it has no justification. I feel sick. I don't understand what the hell I'm doing...

A Capital Built for a King

Advantages: Huge rapid urban growth
Disadvantages: Cant find any!

...Madrid. Not far away the visitor can see the Puerta Del Sol, roads radiating from Madrid to the provinces. Such landmarks belong to the oldest part of the city. As Madrid expanded, kings of the Bourbon dynasty - notably Charles III - built or promoted other monuments' often following the architectural styles of the Bourbons native France. Some examples are the Royal Palace, the National Library, the Municipal Museum, the Fountain of Cybele, the fountain of Neptune and the Puerta de Alcala. ***The Avenue of Art*** ************************* Thanks to the generosity of the Spanish royalty, Madrid also houses one of the most important art galleries in the world. The Prado Museum was erected on the orders of Charles III, known to history as a notable mayor of Madrid. The art collection is essentially that of the Spanish monarchs, who began...

A Gem of a Resort

Advantages: Family friendly resort with a lovely Blue Flag beach
Disadvantages: Not suited for those looking for all night clubbing!

...and supermarkets, of which there are many. There are three small supermarkets around the resort, but if you walk a little further up the main road in the direction of Alcala, you'll come to Mercadona, Tenerife's answer to Tesco! This is a huge supermarket which sells absolutely everything and fantastic prices. It is worth coming here for your alcohol and cigarettes before going home! There are a lot of local products (wine, beer and meat etc) available as well and these are really worth trying. In terms of the gift shops along the main parade, be careful when buying electronics. You really must insist that you get guarantees with things. You can buy a lot of small traditional Canarian gifts very cheaply and there's always room for bartering! If bartering is your thing it is worth heading to one of the markets. The nearest decent one to Playa de la Arena...

Madrid is the place to go!

Advantages: lots to see
Disadvantages: public transport difficult to find

...admiring the architectural brilliance of this building. It was built in the mid 18th century to replace the previous palace, which had been destroyed by a fire in 1734. It's similar to Buckingham palace in many ways, being the official residence of Spain's royal family (although they don't actually live there) and is an absolute must to see. It's situated in Calle Bailén about 5-10 minutes walk from La Gran Via. 2) Palacio de Cristal (glass palace) This is situated in a wonderful park known as el Parque del Retiro. There is also a fantastic lake and a marvellous monument surrounded by water. The main entrances to this park are in La calle de Alcala, la calle de alfono XII and la plaza de la independencia. 3) The shopping If you like shopping, there are a wealth of shops. The best streets for shopping are: - the area near...

...of another chain, The Italian Coffee Company) and though they have fast food chains, these are rather tucked away. Most worrying of all, they do not have any Oxxos or 7elevens, or Circle Ks. Considering I have 2 Oxxos on the very block I live on in Mexico City, this is somewhat unusual. I did ask one of the tour guides why, but he thought I was talking about Ox... There for 3 and a half days, I ate a mixture of hostel breakfasts, restaurant meals and picnics, catered by the plentiful no-name bakeries in the city. My first night I ate on the east side of the Zócalo at Primavera, next door to the massive Jardin. For some reason, these two places were noticeably cheaper than the places opposite them on the west side. I had lunch one day at La Crepe, up on Alcala, which is located above an excellent bookshop which boasts new and used books in...

A park to relax and enjoy in the city centre.

Advantages: All
Disadvantages: Any

...very closed to other important monuments of the city like Prado Museum, Alcalá Gate, Cibeles Square, Loyalty Square or Atocha Station. History of the park It was built thakns to the Count-Duke of Olivares, "Prime Minister" of Philip IV, who told the King to build a Palace rounded by trees, lakes, fountains, sculptures? During the reign of this king, balls and theatre representations were famous all around Europe, and lots of kings and aristocrats came to this palace to enjoy it. During the French invasion of Spain, this palace hosted the French troops? so good bye palace. Huge amounts of explosives were taken into the palace, and due to mistakes, most of them exploded inside the it . Nowadays, only two parts of the palace stay: the Museum of the Army and the "Casón del Buen Retiro" (Big house of the good retreat), where...
