2000 W Renault Megane Coupe - Sport Alize

...I bought my W-reg Renault Megane Coupe 1.6 Sport Alize January 2007. I paid nearly £3000 for this car including the value of my old Citroen AX which I part-exchanged in as part of the deal. I had been looking for this model for some time and was relieved to finally purchase one from a local garage. I bought it with 86000 miles on the clock. It now has 99000. STYLING - Initially one the main reasons I started looking for the coupe variant of the megane was the styling. Although it is starting to show its age now compared to newer models on the market, the car is still an attractive shape. My model is bright red with the standard 15" alloy wheels and overall the car looks sporty and squat. Many reviews here don't seem to distinguise whether it is the phase 1 or phase 2 models. Phase 1 models are usually 8V whereas the phase 2 models are 16V and have a slightly different front and back styling. ...I bought this car after consistently noticing it drive past me on the road .... and then being pleasantly surprised at its very reasonable price and good safety record - it is the safest car in its class. The sport alize has a fully automated hood, compact disc player and air conditioning. It comes in a select number of colours ..... yellow for the flash and brash, and silver, black, blue etc. for the more conservative amongst us. I love driving it - hood up or down. The car has a sizeable boot and room for two passengers in the back - albeit with limited leg room....

Advantages: Easy to get seats out, versatile space, high driving position
Disadvantages: Ignition coils conk out with boring regularity

...My wife had a Mk1 which we loved but it was always going wrong and so we went for a Toyota MPV instead - perhaps more reliable but not nearly so well designed. I've had my glossy metallic red scenic Alize from 17000 to 100000 miles and I've always loved it - a family car at the weekends and take the seats out in 3 minutes and its a van for the week!. I think its reaching the end of its life and in any case might be written off as its too expesive for insurance company to repair - thinking about another one! Things to watch out for - if its misfiring just get a new ignition coil - about £20 each. The trick is to find out whcih cylinder it is! Make sure the timing belt has been done - it was expensive when mine snapped - £1200 repair! If the rear struts go get new ones at I think its struts online - about £30 and dead easy to...

...Owned a Renault Scenic 1.6 Sport Alize for nearly 2 years and my complaints are thin on the ground! The car has been very reliable, drives well and is extremely condusive to carting around two toddlers and associated gubbins. From 0-60 it is a real dynamo and reliable for pulling out of junctions - overtaking is a more cumbersome affair on the A roads or motorways - once in 4th or 5th gear it does cruise nicely but the lack of power at this level is noticable but perhaps not really an issue with a family car. Cabin noise can be annoying on longer journeys. The driving position is great with good views all round and the seats are very comfortable. Gears are smooth and the brakes are superb! From a practical point of view the interior space is astonishing, after loading the kids in and out of a variety of cars (including Saab...

...Thank god I'v finally got rid of this car.I owned a 2001 1.6 Sport Alize Coupe and had nothing but problems with it. Firstly the coil packs went which is a common problem on all renaults. It needed both drive shafts replacing after only 40,000 miles. Needed a new gearbox after 46,000. Near side suspension collapsed whilst taking a roundabout nearly causing a very serious accident. When this car worked it was a fairly good car. Ride was comfortable, engine was nippy but by no means fast and fuel consumption used to be around 40 - 45 mpg. But this car has put me off Renaults for life. It has absolutely no space in the rear seats or boot. And before anyone says but its a coupe I now own a Rover 220 Turbo Coupe and this has acres more space in the back and boot and is alot more reliable!
