As demonstrated on All Things Considered, Danu are a resolutely acoustic yet freewheeling Irish traditional ensemble. Their arrangements are often crowned by treble fiddle lines typical of the early Chieftains, but their rhythmic attack, while precisely marked, is less literal and periodically side-swiped by playful bursts of syncopation. Lead singer Ciaran O Gealbhain is a revelation. His vocals, whether in Irish and English, are haunted by ancient sean nos, but also recall The Incredible String Band and the naive sophistication of Brady and Irvine's nonpareil "purple album". He appears as soloist and in unison on the wistful bouzouki-laced "Easy And Free". His approach to the giddy "Uncle Rat" is deft and childlike, but he is romance incarnate on "The Wee Lass On The Brae" and breathes serene, poetic stillness into "Idir Aird Mhor Is Eochaill". Producer Joe McKenna flawlessly captures the sonic ambience of every tune, down to the final afterglow of living drone. --Christina Roden ... less

All Good Things - The Studio Sessions - Jerry Garcia

Jerry Garcia had an insatiable appetite for music in the 70s, a decade when the Grateful Dead released seven studio albums and three live collections. Simultaneously, he embarked on a solo career that, like the Dead's 70s records, alternately attempted to harness and indulge Garcia's free-flowing inspiration. All Good Things collects the five studio albums he recorded between 1972 and 1982 in one thoroughly annotated, generously enhanced box set. Garcia as a solo artist was most inspired when indulging his eclectic whims--the entirety of his almost-alone debut, 1972's Garcia, a then-revelatory acoustic-swing version of Irvin Berlin's "Russian Lullaby" and any number of easy-flowing jams--and least interesting when in the sway of contemporaneous rock and R&B. Garcia wasn't so much a guy who honed albums as he was a musician who loved to play, whether the tapes were rolling or not. The producers of All Good Things take full advantage of his prolificacy, fleshing out each of the individual titles with bonus material and capping the box with a richly rewarding 12-song CD of outtakes and alternate versions. --Steven Stolder, Amazon.com ... less

Where the Wild Things Are [Blu-ray] [2009] [Region Free] [DVD]

Through his handcrafted ode to the trials of childhood, Spike Jonze puts his own unique imprint on Maurice Sendak's enduring classic. In the prologue, 9-year-old Max (Max Records) stomps around the house, feeling neglected. When his mom (Catherine Keener) sends him to bed without supper, Max runs away (something he doesn't do in the book). He finds a boat and sails to a distant land where fuzzy monsters are raising a rumpus in the forest. Since his wolf suit allows him to fit right in, he joins the fray, catching the eye of Carol (James Gandolfini), who notes, approvingly, "I like the way you destroy stuff. There's a spark to your work that can't be taught." With that, they pronounce the diminutive creature king, hoping he can bring cohesion to their fractured family. After Max comes across Carol's scale-model town, he decides they should build a real one, but the project stalls as Alexander (Paul Dano) and Douglas (Chris Cooper) mope, Judith (Catherine O'Hara) browbeats Ira (Forest Whitaker), and Carol pines for K.W. (Lauren Ambrose), who prefers the company of owls Bob and Terry. Max realises he has to make a choice: stay with the wild things or return home, where he has to keep his aggressive impulses in check. For readers of Sendak's slim tome, his decision won't come as a surprise, but Jonze ends the story on a lovely grace note. Until that time, the squabbling is a bit much--these monsters never stop talking--but Jonze, cowriter Dave Eggers, the Jim Henson Company, and singer/songwriter Karen O. have gone all-out to re-create the inner world of a child with as much empathy as was mustered for the inner adult world of Jonze's Being John Malkovich. --Kathleen C. The Thing [Blu-ray] [Region Free] [DVD]

Director John Carpenter and special makeup effects master Rob Bottin teamed up for this 1982 remake of the 1951 science fiction classic The Thing from Another World, and the result is a mixed blessing. It's got moments of highly effective terror and spine-tingling suspense, but it's mostly a showcase for some of the goriest and most horrifically grotesque makeup effects ever created for a movie. With such highlights as a dog that splits open and blossoms into something indescribably gruesome, this is the kind of movie for die-hard horror fans and anyone who slows down to stare at fatal traffic accidents. On those terms, however, it's hard not to be impressed by the movie's wild and wacky freak show. It all begins when scientists at an arctic research station discover an alien spacecraft under the thick ice, and thaw out the alien body found aboard. What they don't know is that the alien can assume any human form, and before long the scientists can't tell who's real and who's a deadly alien threat. Kurt Russell leads the battle against the terrifying intruder, and the supporting cast includes Richard Masur, Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat, and Wilford Brimley. They're all playing standard characters who are neglected by the mechanistic screenplay (based on the classic sci-fi story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell), but Carpenter's emphasis is clearly on the gross-out effects and escalating tension. If you've got the stomach for it (and let's face it, there's a big audience for eerie gore), this is a thrill ride you won't want to miss. --Jeff Shannon ... less

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity - David Allen

With first-chapter allusions to martial arts, "flow", "mind like water", and other concepts borrowed from the East (and usually mangled), you'd almost think this self-helper from David Allen should have been called Zen and the Art of Schedule Maintenance. Not quite. Yes, Getting Things Done offers a complete system for downloading all those free-floating gotta-dos clogging your brain into a sophisticated framework of files and action lists-- all purportedly to free your mind to focus on whatever you're working on. However, it still operates from the decidedly Western notion that if we could just get really, really organised, we could turn ourselves into 24/7 productivity machines. (To wit, Allen, whom the New Economy bible Fast Company has dubbed "the personal productivity guru", suggests that instead of meditating on crouching tigers and hidden dragons while you wait for a plane, you should unsheathe that high-tech sabre known as the mobile phone and attack that list of calls you need to return.) As whole-life-organising systems go, Allen's is pretty good, even fun and therapeutic. It starts with the exhortation to take every unaccounted-for scrap of paper in your workstation that you can't junk. The next step is to write down every unaccounted-for gotta-do cramming your head onto its own scrap of paper. Finally, throw the whole stew into a giant "in-basket". That's where the processing and prioritising begin; in Allen's system, it get a little convoluted at times, rife as it is with fancy terms, subterms, and sub-subterms for even the simplest concepts. Thank goodness the spine of his system is captured on a straightforward, one-page flowchart that you can pin over your desk and repeatedly consult without having to refer back to the book. That alone is worth the purchase price. Also of value is Allen's ingenious Two-Minute Rule: if there's anything you absolutely must do that you can do right now in two minutes or less, then do it now, thus freeing up your time and mind tenfold over the long term. It's common sense advice so obvious that most of us completely overlook it, much to our detriment. Allen excels at dispensing such wisdom in this useful, if somewhat belaboured, self-improver aimed at everyone from CEOs to football mums (who, we all know, are more organised than most CEOs to start with). --Timothy Murphy ... less

Rather than opting to remake a classic of yesteryear, the team behind 2011s The Thing had other ideas. Appreciating that, in particular, John Carpenters exceptional 1982 horror film would still be lodged in peoples minds, the plan here was to avoid the idea of simply redoing it. Instead, for this new The Thing, the story has been set earlier, making it a prequel to the earlier film. Its completely standalone, too, joining a team stationed at an Antarctic outpost that soon unearths something really quite extraordinary. Turns out, given that this is a movie, its the kind of thing they soon wish they hadnt uncovered, as they find themselves stuck in the middle of nowhere, facing a very deadly foe. You can probably work out what that foe may be. It all works a lot better than you may fear, too, perhaps over-relying on CG over practical effects, but still generating jumps and tension. The DVD presentation looks stunning at its best, too, with the barren, white landscape crisply presented. The disc also boasts an interesting commentary, featuring director Matthijs van Heijningen, which dissects the film in an accessible manner. You sense that some sizeable stories have been left untold here, but its well worth a listen nonetheless. The other supplements are less bountiful, although they do at one stage dig into why the project was embarked upon in the first place. After all, the truth is that this new film of The Thing is no much for John Carpenters earlier remake. But its still a carefully crafted, respectful and surprisingly appropriate prequel. --Jon Foster ... less
