Another book by Jill Murphy, who over the years has been quite a prolific children's story book writer This one focuses on friendships, and is a great book to read to children who might be going through problems with friends, and who may feel they are being left out of things. THE STORY AND ILLUSTRATIONS. The story begins with Marlon, who is a dragon, and also the main character in the story, running out of things to do. Advantages: Lots of fun
Disadvantages: Can get mushy/emotional

...While Robin Hood is always the big motion picture epic that everyone remembers from the early 90's there was another from Walt Disney that maybe isn't so well remembered. It is of course the Hollywood version of the classic tale of The Three Musketeers. In fact even Brian Adams appeared on the soundtrack for this movie but these days only Prince of Thieves seems to be trotted out every year onto tele. At the time though I did really enjoy The Three Musketeers and in fact when I spotted it on DVD just after I bought my first player it was one of the first films I purchased. This is a Disney rework of the classic Dumas novel of the same name in which 3 members of the disbanded Kings guard (Sutherland, Sheen and Platt), link up with a brave young man who whished to join them (Chris O'Donnell) to once again save the kings life. Advantages: Keeps close to the book, some good performances
Disadvantages: Only minor ones

...- some of the skirts and jerseys that the poor girls are forced to wear are awful! It also makes quite an interesting social commentary.The idea of Sylvia going out to work is clearly not an option for a lady of her class, although the family are struggling; thankfully the girls are of a different generation, so their acting/dancing to earn a living is acceptable! I suppose the socialist in me struggles a bit with their story of poverty; Sylvia (through Gum, who is presumed dead) owns the house that they live in, so they are an awful lot better off than many people at the time. However, poverty is always relative and this is only a story after all! I loved this and think it was one of the better offerings over the Christmas period.
