...ink jet printers seem to be the common solution to every home personal computers hard copy situation but buying a cheap printer can work out costlier in the long run. The problem is the cartrages. Even a cheap inkjet printer can be brought for about £40 squid and have quite a decent quality of print but cartrages range from £15 squid to up to £40 and if the whole family are using it on regualar basis they mightent last very long. There are also special paper to buy like glossy for photo's and options to put the printer into a different mode to specialize for photos so these can take up more ink then in draft mode, so its important to look at the whole perspective on what the printer is to be used for and cartridge price before getting one in....

SAVE MONEY on inkjet cartidges

Advantages: Saves a lot of money
Disadvantages: Takes a bit of time, can be messy!

...I feel that there is a conspiracy going on. No, I don;t mean the one about area 47, Roswell and those little green men, or the true whereabouts of Lord Lucan, or whether Elvis really was seen in Sainsbury?s in Bournemouth high street last weekend, this is a bigger conspiracy altogether. I?m sick and tired of paying extortionate costs for something as simple as a cartridge for my printer! I don?t know who came up with the idea of refill cartridges, but they are laughing all the way to the bank, and so are the manufacturers, who are really raking in the cash. Printer cartridges are designed to be thrown away when the ink runs out, and you are supposed to buy a whole replacement cartridge, made by the same company that manufactured your printer (a nice little earner eh!) for up to £30 each time. Wow, that?s a lot of cash these...

HP D1470 Inkjet Printer.

Advantages: Very cheap, durable, and excellent for the amateur computer user.
Disadvantages: Tray a little too small, and a few issues with packing the tray with paper.

...the £30 mark. It is durable, unfussy, and was simple to set-up (plug-and-play). My previous printer was a Lexmark all-in-one, and I honesty did have problems with the Lexmark in terms of installation and reinstallation when the printer was unplugged, so the D1470 was a surprise. It works through USB, and I tested it on Vista, with no problems. The installation booklet included was, as befitting the price (and perhaps the confidence in compatibility), sparsely-detailed, but HP do offer good support at a central level. The printing is fast, bar complex tables and colour-heavy projects, and I was able to get around 150-200 pages of text from one black cartridge, so hopefully this gives you an idea of the economics of the printer (at best just over 6p per page, not taking into account the cost of paper etc.) Part of my testing...

Good quality A3 Inkjet Printer

Advantages: Fast A4 & A3 printing, good quality from HP

The price was around £280 + VAT and delivery. We had always purchased HP products before, as they have proved themselves to be value for money as far as long service and reliability is concerned. This printer is available in three configurations; The CP1700 is a standard A3 inkjet photo quality printer; the CP1700d is the same model, but comes with a 'duplex unit' which enables you to print documents double sided; the CP1700ps is a 'postscript edition' that comes with 'Adobe Postscript' software and configuration. Dell photo printer 720

...I bought this Dell printer several months ago when my old printer broke down. I have never really needed to print much (only the occasional essay or B-day card), so I decided to go for this cheap Dell 720 photo printer. I looked for the cheapest printer I could find and I believe this one cost between £30-35 on the Dell website. I have just checked on the website and I don?t think they even sell this version anymore. A newer version the ?Dell 725? has replaced the 720 and is now the cheapest model that Dell sells in the UK (at £35). Top of the range inkjet - amazing printer

Advantages: Quick, amazing text quality, nice photo quality, computer doesn't have to be on to opporate, auto-alignment, the list goes on
Disadvantages: Bitch to install, no tools in windows toolbox, more suited to business environment

...short spooling time is thanks to the 24MB onboard RAM. CARTRIDGES This printer is a lot more economical than the old HP2000C. A 20% covered black page costs just 8.4 cents (around 6p). Cheaper printers use 2 cartridges - black and colour. The colour usually contains all three of colours - red, blue and yellow. This means that if the cartridge runs out of red, but is still half full of yellow and blue, you must replace it and waste ink. But the HP2250 uses 4 different cartridges, so you only replace them if they ACTUALLY run out. Apart from this, it uses cyan and magenta instead of red and blue. This produces a much more vibrant image and a full set of colours. One thing you might want to note however, is that to replace all the cartridges you'll have to shell out £100 (around £25 each)! The black one will need replacing from time to time...

..., dell customer support and all the usual stuff. -Style- Its not one of the most attractive things in the world, it's a kind of greyish colour with black paper feed trays and catch tray. The sides and back are also black. There is a big dell badge on the front and set to the side the power button is on a weird oval type raised platform. -Paper feed- It has an adjustable paper feed tray with A4 paper being the biggest size. To adjust it you just have to pull the little grey tab along, so easy to do. The only problem I have came across is if you have too much paper it can be hard to get it all in. -Cartridges- There are two cartridges needed for this printer, a Black and a coloured cartridge. They are about an inch wide and one and a half inches high. You will receive 2 "trial" cartridges with the printer but these will run out...

...It is all very well getting a good printer for around £75, but you could have spent more than that on Epson (or other make) cartridges by the time you have colour printed 4 reams of paper (4 replacements). First tip: print in black, even for colour stuff, when you are just doing drafts. Second tip: if you must buy cartridges, get the compatibles - they contain the same amounts of ink but are less than half price. Third tip: be brave, refill them! Go to http://www.inky-fingers.co.uk/ and they will send you a free guide book. If you want to experiment, order the £3.99 syringe of black ink - it comes with instructions, needle, ink, everything. It is less than one tenth of the cost of Epson Cartridges....

I wouldn’t say it looks great, but it doesn’t look horrible and at the end of the day it’s a printer, it does what its meant to do, and it does it well, very well in fact so a little compromise on the design isn’t really a lot of compromise at all. One thing it isn’t amazing on is printing pictures.
