...Allen Carr must be made Sir Allen in next years New Years Honours, this man is a genius - and no relation to me !! His series of books of advice on quitting smoking are the most life change thing you can read if you are a smoker who wants to give up the addiction. His technique is unique, no scare stories, no nicotine replacement (eg gum or patches)and no lectures, instead he helps you to think about what you are doing each time you light a cigarette and why you are doing it. As a committed 20 a day man for many years I though I was a smoker for life, I've quit for one week know and can honestly say there have been no cravings and no temptation to smoke at all. If you love a smoker or are a smoker who loves life, and wants it to last longer, buy this book - it won't scare you but it will change your view of your little "friends" you... Read review

...With the fast approaching smoking in public places ban, i decided i would quit smoking before 1st July 2007, so i had this date in mind and a friend recommended the Allen Carr book to me. i got started and within a week i'd done it! i read this book a month and a half ago and even during the week i was reading the book - i only smoked 2 cigarettes (including my final one which i only smoked half of), although the author says to continue to smoke, i really couldn't do it. i am very sceptical and not very easily persuaded, along with this i have a psychology degree so have a greater insight into the techniques used in the book, all the same the book was fantastic, although not an amazing well written or fun to read book, it does the job it was written for. my friend who recommended the book to me hasn't smoked for over 4 months after... Advantages: This book has saved loadsa money, I no loger smell, and I can do stuff without a dependancy on a little white stick.
Disadvantages: The author insists that smoking is not habitual - I'm still not 100% sure about this

...Ever since I saw pictures of Geri Halliwell (amongst others) looking pensive reading self help books I always swore blind that I never ever read or need one. They couldn’t possibly work and if you actually want to do something then it’s the power of your own mind that will make you do something – not some supposed Guru who’s writing from his ivory tower on a subject that they have no experience of other from text books. So it was with severe scepticism that I handed over my £7.99 at Waterstones and left with my rather flimsy looking copy of Allen Carr’s Easyway to Quit Smoking. ...want to be one of those people who gives up just to start again in five days! It was at this time that I was given the book and as I started to read it - it really made sense! What Allen tells you about one cigarette leading to another really hit home with me - the common sense of it all is fantastic - why was I blinded for all those years - did I not realise that by smoking one cigarette it was going to lead me to smoke another!! I think the main theme of the book is that it makes you realise that you do have a choice - when you are craving a cigarette it is not because you really want one - it is just the nicotine in your system wanting a top up! I don't really want to go into more detail about the ins and outs of Mr Carr's theories - on that score the book speaks for itself - it allowed me to give up on my first attempt and that was 2... ...This is my first review of a book, folks, so please be kind on the comments! Allen Carr wasn't a name familiar to me prior to discovering this book; I doubt many of you will have heard of him either. Basically, he's a gentleman that had a major, long-term smoking habit, and discovered a way to kick it. Cue the book... First of all, for all the sceptics out there, of which I include myself, this is not your typical 'government health warning' message. Carr doesn't nag you, or tell you you should stop because of your health. As any smoker knows, being nagged to stop generally leads to smoking more frequently. Carr has a very subtle approach that reinforces what you already know - there is very little that is new or revolutionary in this book, other than the way Carr encourages you to think. ...I have been a smoker since age 18 and I am now 38. I have tried on three different occasions to stop smoking (I did succeed but for only a couple of months at a time). I was beginning to feel I was a lost cause and hooked on these evil sticks of nicotine…………..that is until I read Allen Carr's Easy Way to stop smoking. I was recommended this by a couple of friends who had attended his clinic and stopped smoking. They were very heavy smokers and this made me wonder what the trick was and I was quite cynical about it. Unable to afford his clinic, the next best thing was his book. I was surprised to learn that Allen Carr himself was actually an accountant who smoked 100 cigarettes a day himself and spent a long time considering the reasons why he was so terribly addicted to nicotine. ...I only wish I had discovered this book years ago, I'd have a lot more to show for my money rather than having wasted thousands of pounds - gone in many puffs of smoke! I read about the Allen Carr book on the internet, after scouring a lot of anti-smoking sites. I read www.whyquit.com and others, then saw a link to the Easy Way to stop smoking.....www.allencarrseasyway.com - and what a great site! I admit, I was very sceptical as I'd tried stopping smoking umpteen times before and thought why could reading a book make the decision for me?? I was already on patches, so had in effect stopped, so was I cheating you think? I maintain it was more a case of making doubly certain I'd never go back to the weed - and Carr's book has made me determined. I found the book on Amazon and sent for it immediately. ...Ok, so it’s not likely to win any prizes for writing style or phraseology, but Allen Carr’s easy way to stop smoking certainly offers just what it says. Some of you may have noticed that I wrote a review just over a year ago on a relatively new quit-smoking aid known as Zyban, and how happy I had been to have become a non-smoker with the help of this drug. You may therefore wonder why I felt the need to read the book so long after stopping. The truth is, like so many other smokers who quit using the “willpower method”, as Allen Carr refers to it, even months after I had stopped smoking I was still craving cigarettes. Then, one drunken night, the inevitable happened and I succumbed to temptation. And so began the downwards spiral once again. ...I had been a smoker for 40 years, watched my father die of lung cancer and my husband have 3 heart attacks and bypass surgery. Did i want to give up? Did i heck!! I hated the cost of my habit but got round this by doing a regular ciggie run to France. For most of my working career i was a nurse....saw amputations of limbs, gangrene etc, all caused by the effects of nicotine constricting blood vessels and depriving tissue of oxygen.Andof course the dreadful emphysema...in fact this is what really got to me in the end. that awful television advert with the woman unable to breathe...... with the panic in her eyes and the inhaler in her lap. I bought a copy of Allen Carrs book, not really expecting very much but hey it only cost the same as a packet of fags.
