...As anyone who has read my early reviews knows- I love Italy! I've been going there now for the past ten years with my parents, and for the first time last year I made my own way there with the boyfriend for a nice Italian holiday. The Grand Hotel Excelsior was my residence for numerous weeks holiday, and it certainly not one for the faint hearted! In the Thompson guide book it is described as 'quaint' which to put it politely is rather an understatement. One thing that can be said for it is it is completely oozing with Italian charm. The Amalfi Coast -----Is this the best scenic route in Europe???

Advantages: Breathtakingly beautiful.
Disadvantages: The road is not one for the feint of heart

La Bussola- A taste of Italy

Advantages: The view! Worth a million pounds, but you get it at a reasonable price
Disadvantages: Some find rather old fashioned, but it has a certain charm

...THE HOTEL ITSELF From the outside the building may actually look rather ugly, or so I thought. This steams from the fact that the Hotel La Bussola was once a mill and pasta factory, a fact I find which further adds to its charms. The building is one of great character; for centuries the building has been used, and it has stories to tell of Southern Italian culture. On the main coast road leading to Amalfi the hotel has pride of place along the seafront. Sitting on top of a cliff face means optimum views are afforded, and every room offers stunning sea views. I last visited the Hotel La Bussola in 2005 and it was just as good as I remembered it from the previous year. We booked two standard double bedrooms, which were a million miles away from standard. A taste of the Amalfi Coast in Thurrock

Advantages: good variety of dishes
Disadvantages: waiting time

...Food Mamma Amalfi is an Italian themed restaurant, similar to the likes of Bella Pasta. It is an ideal place to have a meal with a group of people as there is so much variety in the menu there is bound to be something to please everyone. There is a good range of seafood, vegetarian and meat dishes, which is great as I can take my non meat eating friends there without feeling guilty that they have only one option on the menu. There are also quite a few dishes that are not either pizza or pasta so even those who dont particularly fancy an Italian should find something they like. I am not an expert on Italian Cuisine and have no idea whether this is at all like authentic Italian food but I really enjoy the rich and flavourful sauces of their pasta dishes, and have had some of my best pasta dishes there. A walk above the shores

Advantages: Spectacular coastline, with attractive towns and good walking
Disadvantages: A tourist trap, albeit a superior one

Constricted in its valley and with just one main street descending to the town centre and the sea, Amalfi nowadays seems above all bustling and touristy. Moreover, we had this impression while there on a chilly day in early spring; what?s it?s like in high summer I hesitate to imagine. At least by then, though, the boats that take visitors out to explore the coves and grottos along the coast would have been running. From Amalfi we caught a bus onwards to the tiny village of Bomerano in the hills some miles to the west (with foreknowledge of what the town was like and more confidence in our map, we might have tried hiking directly there from the Nature Reserve without the diversion to the coast). Hotel International

Advantages: Location, breakfasts
Disadvantages: Poor rooms

...I recently went on a cultural girlie trip with a friend to Paris. I was left to do all the booking. I was looking for a reasonable hotel, near a metro stop, which included breakfast. I came across the Hotel International on various travel sites and it seemed fairly highly rated so I booked us in for three nights. LOCATION: The hotel is located 6 Rue Auguste Barbier in the 11th Arrondissement. The nearest Metro stop is Garcourt which was a two minute walk away and it was a five minute walk to Republique which gives good links to other lines. It's not really central enough to avoid the Metro and walk to the attractions but it was located so close to a stop that it seemed ideal. PRICE: Prices vary depending on size of room and season. There are singles, doubles and triples available. We paid Euro254 for the whole time...

Advantages: Out of the town

...I'm glad that I did not get to read any of the reviews before I went to this hotel, or see the Holidays from Hell programme the night before! The hotel can be found along the seafront, about three miles from the main centre of Blackpool, heading out towards Fleetwood. It is now under the Britannia hotels group and it is easily accessible by tram and bus. We used the trams the whole time instead of me driving all the time. My husband, my two youngest children and myself went last week for a couple of nights, after finding an advert which gave a special price of £35 per person dinner bed and breakfast per night. The two children were included free of charge, including their meals. The advert did state that the hotel was ungoing a £7million pound upgrade, and that some services may not be available. It is currently rated as a three star hotel, but I cannot for the life of me see why as I found it to be of at least four star standard. There are 86 rooms, all of which incorporate an en suite bathroom and are decorated to a decent standard. All rooms include a hair dryer, trouser press, direct dial telephone, satellite television (selected channels only) and the complementary tray of tea, coffee and biscuits. There are four types of rooms available in relation to the view they offer the guests. The basic room is an inland room, then there is a garden facing room and finally the sea views and sea views with balcony (the prices are slightly higher for these).
