Lovely Hotel In The Heart Of Ambleside

Advantages: Location, pool, nice rooms, excellent food, excellent service
Disadvantages: None that spring to mind

...I have stayed here once with my wife just before they finished putting the pool and spa center in. We went in on the off chance one night when we had gone to Ambleside for the day and decided we fancied staying the night as we do quite often!! We had our dog with us and didn't really expect to find anywhere that would take dogs,we had tried a couple of places first, but on asking at the Salutation we were surprised to find that they would. We were also given a room with a nice big balcony to let the dog out on, although we were charged £12 for the night for her. Location ********** We had always fancied staying at The Ambleside Salutation, having been to Ambleside and walked past it numerous times. It really is very well located right in the middle of Ambleside on the bend in the road near The White Lion pub, and in easy walking...

Is Peter Rabbit there

Advantages: A beautiful town good base for touring
Disadvantages: Gets very busy during the high season

...I first went to Ambleside with my parents and sister, who was studying Beatrix Potter as part of her A level in Art. We stayed at a bed and breakfast on the road from Lake Windermere into Ambleside opposite the garden centre, which was very nice indeed. I have since been on three further occasions, once for a walking holiday, staying at the same bed and breakfast, and twice for brief stays as we were passing through on our way to somewhere else. Ambleside itself is a good base for touring as it lies in a strategic position on the A591, the main north to south road through the Lake District. It was granted its charter as a market town in 1650 and has many remnants of the 17th century. My favourite of these is the tiny house built over the Stock Ghyll, the stream that runs through Ambleside. Originally built as a summerhouse...

Happy Customer at the Regent

Advantages: Lovely modern rooms & wonderful breakfast
Disadvantages: Room slightly smaller than expacted

...I went to the Regent Hotel in February 08 for a 2 night stay. I found the hotel after endless hotel searches in Ambleside which seemed to all bring up dated, old-fashioned looking hotels which weren't what we wanted. The Regent offered a refreshing alternative with modern looking bedroom, all recently refurbished. We paid £300 for 2nights bed and breakfast for 2 people. The hotel was easy to find and was right near Lake Windermere as promised. We managed to park the car easily in the car-park, although we did notice that once everyone had checked in for the day the car-park looked rather full. It was only a short walk from where we parked to the reception, we only had small weekend bags but wouldn't have had a problem with suitcases. The staff were friendly on arrival and were efficient and quick in finding our key and getting us to...

See Jemima Puddleduck's gate

Advantages: A beautiful house kept as it was in Beatrix Potter's time
Disadvantages: It might get a bit busy in summer

...Beatrix Potter is one of our most famous children?s authors and whilst we were in The Lake District recently we visited her house, Hill Top, which now belongs to the National Trust. Where is it? Hill Top is in a village called Near Sawrey which is situated about one mile to the west of Lake Windermere, about halfway along the lake and about two miles south of Hawkshead. How do you get there? When I first visited about 25 years ago I was staying in Ambleside and walked from there down to Bowness on Windermere where I caught a ferry across Lake Windermere and then walked to Near Sawrey from there. This time we were travelling by car and drove to Hawkshead and then travelled along the B5285 to Near Sawrey, where there is a free car park for visitors to Hill Top. It is also accessible by a variety of local Stagecoach buses...

Rats galore!

Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review

...My 5 year old son loves reading Beatrix Potter books so on a recent trip to the Lake District I knew he would love to visit Beatrix Potters house. Hill Top farm is a delightful 17th century farmhouse that was the home of Beatrix Potter for many years. How to get there. ************** Hill Top farm is situated in the tiny hamlet of near Sawrey. It is 2 miles south Hawkshead. For exact directions you can always use the AA route finder. It is possible to get to Hill Top farm by train although it is a bit of a mission! There is a train station in Windermere and from here there is a ferry across the lake. A marked off road path leads the 2 miles to the house. From April until September there is a bus service from nearby Hawkshead. Bike hire is available from Windermere, Ambleside or Hawkshead. There are cycle paths and the scenery is...

Diamond review  Marymoose relaxes, with three reviews in one!

Advantages: Nice room, mainly good food, fantastic massage!!!
Disadvantages: Very poor service and organisation overall, particularly in Purdeys, really let down the experienc

...A month or so ago I decided that hubby and I needed some serious rest and relaxation, so I browsed the Internet to see if anything took my fancy. I came across a Spa deal at the Langdale Hotel and Country Club near Ambleside (39 miles from us), and thought that this sounded like just the thing I was after. The website I have to say is excellent, and if you do decide ever to visit then certainly check it out, there are photos (although saying that they can make it look a bit better than it is!) of everything ? rooms, spa, restaurant. Plus it is regularly updated. Having consulted with hubby (he wasn?t particularly keen I have to say) and informing him that it was great value at just £250 for the both of us, he begrudgingly agreed to it. This review is a lengthy one ? it is essentially three reviews in one ? the hotel, Purdey...

Charming little B&B, picturesque location

Advantages: Cosy, friendly staff, excellent facilities
Disadvantages: Not the cheapest B&B in the Lake District

...When we decided to go to Ambleside for a few nights we originally planned to go camping, as our trip approached we were a bit unsure about how good the weather would be and at the last moment did a search for a cheap B&B. The Old Vicarage at Ambleside wasn't the cheapest of the B&Bs we found in our search, however it definitely stood out as somewhere we both wanted to stay. At £45 per night each it was a little more expensive than we'd planned (bearing in mind we had originally wanted to go camping) however it was well worth the money! Arriving in Ambelside we were pleased to discover the B&B wasn't slap bang in the middle of this busy, bustling tourist destination. While we did need to drive through the centre the B&B itself was down a quieter road which was ideal for us. The car park itself was fairly compact and not...

Perhaps i will retire here

Advantages: Beautiful location, pretty town, great base for walking
Disadvantages: The rain, too many people in high season, access

...Hopefully some of you will have read my recent opinion on the Lake District in which i mentioned Ambleside as one of the nicest towns. My sister spent 4 years at university and i am a great fan of hiking so i have been to / and stayed in Ambleside many many times. Although my sister no longer lives in Ambleside (there goes the free acommodation, doh!) I keep going back. For those of you that don't know Ambleside is south central lakeland and is only about 40minutes from the M6 (Junction 36) - probably about 2 hours in total from Manchester. It is also accessible by public transport - you can get trains to Windermere and then buses from Windemere to Ambleside. The services aren't great and less frequent than bigger towns and cities but if you plan ahead they are good enough. Parking in Ambleside is virtually impossible in...
