AMD Opteron 165 "AMDs gem of overclockabilty"
Review of AMD Dual-Core Opteron 165 / 1.8 GHz processor by  krille282

Advantages: So many...stability, overclocks insanely & most bang for the buck.
Disadvantages: None except that Intel C2Ds now yields better performance.

...statements from my side to the reader/s). If you however feel that this review contains false information just comment on it so that I will get the chance to edit (if your proven right of course). Finally the Opteron 165 have one other feature that it´s entry level X2 siblings are a bit short of & thats probably why its so fast in so many applications & benchmarks that i have runned curious yet? its the doubled L2 cache (2x1MB) FYI I´m currently running this gem @ 2.7GHz (that´s a good 900Mhz OC) & the temp is so low compared to my former AMD A64 3200+ (Venice) around 15 degrees celsius lower on the average. I can also add that I bought this one just to OC the heck out of it, so immediately after the break-in time of 3 days I ramped up the speed adjusted the various settings in the BIOS & ran PRIME95, ORTHOS & 3DMARK06 I was utterly... Budget gaming chip with overclocking potential
Review of AMD Opteron 146 / 2 GHz processor by  ladforce

Advantages: Price, Performance
Disadvantages: Single Core

...This chip is from AMD's last generation architecture using the 939 socket. Due to the new AM2 architecture being released, socket 939 chips have plummeted in price as they are no longer cutting edge. This means there are bargains to be had and this opteron is one of those chips. Around 60 pounds buys you a single core 2Ghz processor which is nothing special. What you are not told is these chips actually use server grade silicon and have 1Mb level 2 cache as opposed to lesser grade silicon and 512Kb level 2 cache found in the desktop equivalent. This, in theory, should allow the chip to be overclocked more heavily and therefore perform much better. At stock the chip is quick and performs well in games. However, this chip is not bought to run at stock its bought to be heavily overclocked. Loading up the chip into my pc, which uses... Read review

ASUS A8V-XE "a great companion for your s939 CPU"
Review of ASUS A8V-XE - motherboard - ATX - K8T890 by  krille282

Advantages: Stability, Overclockingfriendly & also Dirtcheap
Disadvantages: Not really only minor annoyances

...So good folks what we have here is a very stable, overclockfriendly & overall excellent s939 motherboard, considering the low pricetag + it has all the features you should need (SATA2 support & RAID etc.) unless if you want to go SLI/Crossfire and/or other fancy deluxe feats. as Firewire & such edit: SLI is having 2 of exactly the same graphicscards from NVIDIA connected to each other via a bridge connector & Crossfire is the same but instead of NVIDIA cards, its AMD/ATI cards. SATA2 is a newer standard that doubles the data transfer speed from 150MB/s to 300MB/s on harddisks that have that utilizes that interface (most newer does) RAID is used when having 2 or more of exactly the same harddisks to make them run faster by mirroring them, or to prevent datalosses (i´m not sure which one to use, however RAID0 ,RAID1, RAID0+1 RAID 5... ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 - A great upgrade motherboard
Review of ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 - motherboard - ATX - ALi M1695 by  tungst3n

Advantages: Full Speed AGP and PCI-Express 16 Graphics, Great Upgrade Path, Stable System
Disadvantages: None - As yet

...ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 - AGP and PCI-Express Graphics I have had the motherboard for 6 months now and I have been very pleased with the motherboard. The chipset used on the board is the ULi M1695. The chipset is the only one currently on the market that allows the use of both AGP and/or PCI-Express graphic cards for the AMD Socket 939 CPU's. The board gave me an upgrade path that I have fully used. When I bought the board I had a Nvidia 6800GT AGP graphics card, I couldn't afford to upgrade that aspect when I was also buying a Athlon 64 939 Chip (3700+) and a motherboard, Since then I have purchased a PCI-Express 16 Nvidia 7800GT. The new graphics card went into the board with no issues. The only negatives I would give to this board was the lack of a firewire port and lack of gigabit internet but as I paid £55... Read review

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz
Review of AMD Athlon 64 3500+ / 2.2 GHz processor by  china_wolf

Advantages: 64-bit future proofed, speedy, excellent value for money
Disadvantages: Dual core AMD 64 CPUS are faster... but hey it would make this CPU cheaper so it's not all bad!

...... although I would only purchase it online where it is cheaper as high street stores can rip you off. This CPU is clocked at 2.2GHz, but it is just as fast (if not faster) as Intel's P4 3.6GHz CPU. It uses AMD's 939 Socket plug motherboards and supports DUAL DDR RAM as well as having a 64-bit instruction set for future proofing, and AMD's patented Cool'N'Quiet technology that lets the CPU power down when not used for processor demanding applications. Be wary though, as there are a multitude of different types of 3500+ CPUs by AMD because they just keep editing the original CPU to improve it further. The original 3500+ uses the 'Newcastle" core, which basically has everything that I listed above but only has 512KB of level 2 cache memory (very fast memory storing instructions that is used over and over again so that it can be more quickly... AMD have done it again
Review of AMD Athlon 64 3000+ / 1.8 GHz processor by  bigdavep

Advantages: Warranty, Easy Install, Very Quick, Inexpensive, Overclockable
Disadvantages: Can't think of any

...Score another one for AMD. The new range of winchester chips are outstanding and continue to lead the way in 64bit computer while Intel drag their heels trying to comply with AMD's specs for 64bit processing (simply because microsoft and everyone else aredesigning their 64bit software to AMD's architecture). I puchased the AMD 3000+ Winchester for socket 939 along with a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 motherboard from GladiatorComputers. The processor retails at £109incVAT along with the motherboard retailing at £79.99. And because the board had PCI-Express on it I also got a 6600GT from Gigabyte that retails at £149.95 The processor itself is retail boxed so it comes with a full 3 years AMD warranty and an approved AMD heatsink. It normally used to be that AMD produced pretty poor heatsinks but there are fantasic, great cooling (as you... Read review

AMD 3800+
Review of AMD Athlon 64 3800+ / 2.4 GHz processor by  coopsta133

Advantages: Fast, affordable
Disadvantages: Not Multicore.

...Now, I'm not one who knows that much about CPU's before i begin but i can say a few good points about this. The AMD 3800+ is the last of their single core cpu's that fit the 939 pin socket. In case you do not understand, when you get a computer, you have to buy a motherboard with a matching size socket for your CPU. This is 939 pin. The newer ones are AM2. This cpu only has a single core but at least it is a nice quick one clocking in at 2.4GhZ. It can be over clocked but I do not do that nor do I recommend unless you have a fair bit of experience. I can honestly say it is fast enough to run ANY current game and I have an X850XTX graphics card which is about two years old now. So clearly its not outdated and if you are budget it does fine. HOWEVER!- If you have the money to spend, go for a newer AMD dual core cpu. The reason why... Read review

Rock Hard?
Review of ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 - motherboard - ATX - ALi M1695 by  foehammer

Advantages: Affordable, reliable and fast
Disadvantages: No SLi capability, poor manual

...I recently purchased this budget board from an online store for £59.98 including postage and packaging, which i think was a good deal, but it can be found cheaper apparently according to Ciao! The unit came well packaged, it is in a green box with a close-up od the motherboard on the front, and lots of stickers for the various awards this motherboard has won... lots and lots. It is a standard ATX size mainboard: 304mm x 244mm and so will fit a standard ATX case. The motherboard features both support for AGP and PCI-express graphics cards which is both unusual and ideal for people looking to upgrade but not fork out for a new PCI-Express card just yet! It supports socket 939 processors up to and including AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core 64bit. Used with two identical DDR RAM sticks, it will use the Dual Channel Technology which makes... Read review

Dual Athlon MP motherboard from Gigabyte
Review of Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW+ - motherboard - ATX - AMD-760 MPX by  positivereflect

Advantages: Supports all Athlon MP processors, CPU plug and play,
Disadvantages: Not many overclock options, tempremantal onboard raid, registered memory recommended

...Deciding to upgrade my computer as i could not do many things at once, i looked into the options available. My current pc at the time being an Amd Athlon XP 2600+ (which is still pretty fast), i was after something faster but not too expensive (and as i am an AMD fanatic it had to be an AMD). After much searching and forum checking, i had three options: 1/ Upgrade to Athlon 64 Pros: Newest processor offering from AMD, PCI express on most motherboards, Dual Channel memory support, My current memory will work fine. Cons: Might mean purchase of new video card, Might mean purchase of new Power supply, 2/ Upgrade to AMD Opteron Pros: Newest server/workstation based processor offering from AMD, PCI express on most motherboards, Dual Channel memory support, Cons: Might mean purchase of new video card, Might mean...
