amd chip
Review of AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ / 2.3 GHz processor by
benweale
Advantages: fast, cheap
Disadvantages: none
...this chip is such good value, just built a new computer using this one, much faster than a 2 year old amd, runs cold, dual core.
why pay for much more expensive chips when this one is does it all.
comes with its own heatsink and fan, so easy to install its not big once its all assembled.
i much prefer amd over intel as they perform better for the price, its easy to find motherboards that support these, that is the problem with older models that they become non supported really quickly so you are forced to upgrade everything at once, but i cant belive the difference that it makes when opening lots of files open and using it for photo editing.
buy it...

AMD 4600 all the way?
Review of AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ / 2.4 GHz processor by
evergreen46
Advantages: 2 processors in 1 , same size as single core.
Disadvantages: Not the most powerful version
....
Cost
Recently, due to the cost of Intels processors being so cheap, although not as good, AMD have slashed the prices of there processors. You can now pick up a 4600 for only £70's odd. Great. You will need to be careful for which socket you actually go for but the chances are you will need to upgrade your motherboard (just like that with intel) as explained earlier. What all this means is that you can really improve your home PC's performance with a very simple and cheap upgrade for much less than you origionally thought.
Reliability
As of yet, no issues, so must be reliable. I know others with the same story.
AMD vs Intel
A question, AMD or Intel. AMD all the way. They are the largest company owning ATI which, coupled together make a unstoppable team. A 4600 is like other AMD far more efficent than the same spec Intel processor.

Superb Upgrade, Well Worth the Money
Review of AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ / 2 GHz processor by
ratbot
Advantages: Speed, Value for Money
Disadvantages: Stock Cooler
...Being an AMD fan boy may not help with the decision of the upgrade. But for the price of the processor you will not be disappointed. I had a 3000+ 64Bit AMD I found it to be a pretty quick with music and videos. However I noticed problems with speed when loading games and video editing.
Which is why I decided to upgrade to the AMD 64 Athlon X2 2600+. The 3600+ clocks at 2.0 GHz each, this allows the user to assign programmes with either processor so performance is not lost. This is the plus side of having two processors as you are able to assign processes to a certain processor.
AMD have also brought out two drivers which can fix problems with games which are not developed to support dual cores. One of the games called soldiers does not support two processors and is knows to BSOD (Blue Screen of death) and also crashes the system...

AMD Phenom 9500 / 2.2 GHz processor
Review of AMD Phenom 9500 / 2.2 GHz processor by
shivendu
Advantages: quad-core design handles data efficiently; cheaper than competing Intel quad-core chips.
Disadvantages: Expensive
...The good: "True" quad-core design handles data efficiently; cheaper than competing Intel quad-core chips.
The bad: Not fast enough to justify the price savings compared to Intel's chips; next-gen Intel quad-core due out soon could further the performance gap.
The bottom line: AMD's new Phenom quad-core CPU has little to recommend it over competing chips from Intel. The Phenom is marginally less expensive, but not enough to make up for its subpar performance. Unless AMD drops prices more aggressively, it looks like Intel will maintain its grasp on the CPU market for the foreseeable future.
For raw performance, AMD's Athlon 64 X2 chips have lingered behind their Intel Core 2 Duo counterparts all year. Only aggressive pricing from AMD kept its old dual-core CPUs in systems and on store shelves. According to our testing, AMD will have...

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
Review of AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ / 2.2 GHz processor by
Azraeldarcon
Advantages: Great multitasking speed and reliability
Disadvantages: Minimal overheating
...I have had this processor installed in my pc for over a year now, and as of yet have found little to complain about. Runs relatively cool in comparison to other AMD processors I have had in the past, and with a little research can be overclocked significantly with little heat increase. I currently use a small liquid cooling system on the processor and have had great success with it. As far as for gaming, there are other processors out there that would be better for performance, but you are going to PAY!!! For the price, this is probably just about the best Dual Core processor available right now, especially if you are an AMD faithful such as myself. Easy to install and maintain. Now for the bad: I have noticed in SOME (very few) games that overheating DOES occur, however this is only during intense moments that truly pull maximum system...

Athlon X2 6000+
Review of AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ / 3 GHz processor by
far_hk
Advantages: Integrated Memory Controller
Disadvantages: TDP, Price, Relative performance
...AMD has been on the decline after Intel introduced its core 2 Duo line of processors. It has been late on 65 nm process and they are paying for that. They had the market under total control just one year ago, but now they have lost even their loyal customers. AMD has to produce something very powerful and should be done quickly or they will even lose the small share that they has got.
Coming to the processor, Athlon 64 X2 6000+ is a midrange processor to compete Intel in the midrange segment. It is powerful but not enough to beat Intel's counter parts.
I got this processor in the PC which my uncle gifted to me. So, I have got it free. If I were given a choice before it was gifted to me, I certainly would have asked for an Intel processor in the same price range.
Looking at the processor, we note that it's speed is 3 GHz. It has...

AMD Athlon 64 4400+ X2
Review of AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ / 2.3 GHz processor by
richooooo
Advantages: Cheap,Fast,Easy to Install
Disadvantages: None
...it only uses 65 Watts of Electric, Better for the environment and cheaper for my bills. In Windows Vista the Processor gets rated 4.9 out of 5.9 on the Windows Experience Index which you can tell is very good for such a low priced CPU.
I would recommend getting a Power Supply of at least 400Watts for this processor and it must have a 24 Pin Power connector and a P4 Connector for the Motherboard, if you do not the computer may not start. You will also need to find a compatible motherboard for this as well but if you are building your own PC I would suspect you know which parts to use.
The CPU Runs at 2.3 GHZ it is overclockable but I did not try this as the computers were not for me. The other features this beast has are 64 bit Technology, 3Dnow!, Streaming SIMD Extensions, Streaming SIMD Extensions 2, Integrated memory controller, AMD...

Almost perfect
Review of AMD K7 (Athlon) by
dazzle
Advantages: Cheap, Fast, Definitely a good buy.
Disadvantages: Runs very hot and needs compatible motherboard and power supply
...AMD have certainly turned themselves around in recent times and now represent a viable option to Intel processors.
Traditionally AMD have been strong in the "value"/budget segment of the market. The AMD Athlon is a processor that challenges Intel higher up the food chain.
Advantages
AMD Athlons are faster than Intel processors when comparing Mhz to Mhz.
AMD Athlons are cheaper than Intel processors Mhz for Mhz.
Possible pitfalls...
AMD processors require motherboards with "Socket A". These are different to motherboards that support Intel processors and tend to be slightly more expensive.
It is highly recommended that you use an AMD approved power supply with your AMD processor. If you don't you are liable to suffer from unexplainable crashes.
This is because AMD processors run much hotter than Intel processors. It is very easy...

AMD have done it again
Review of AMD Athlon 64 3000+ / 1.8 GHz processor by
bigdavep
Advantages: Warranty, Easy Install, Very Quick, Inexpensive, Overclockable
Disadvantages: Can't think of any
...Score another one for AMD. The new range of winchester chips are outstanding and continue to lead the way in 64bit computer while Intel drag their heels trying to comply with AMD's specs for 64bit processing (simply because microsoft and everyone else aredesigning their 64bit software to AMD's architecture).
I puchased the AMD 3000+ Winchester for socket 939 along with a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 motherboard from GladiatorComputers. The processor retails at £109incVAT along with the motherboard retailing at £79.99. And because the board had PCI-Express on it I also got a 6600GT from Gigabyte that retails at £149.95
The processor itself is retail boxed so it comes with a full 3 years AMD warranty and an approved AMD heatsink. It normally used to be that AMD produced pretty poor heatsinks but there are fantasic, great cooling (as you...
