fast and cheap but need real setup
Review of AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 266FSB by natmat

Advantages: lower price & reability
Disadvantages: no documentation

...the AMD ATHLON XP 2400 is one of the best cpu from AMD for full compliance it's better to get a 266mhz memory velocity and mother board @266 fsb minimum as a 0,13 micron technology you can get your application faster than ever in comparaison the athlon xp2400 mhz encode and decode wma files(windows media) file than p4 2200 if using memory @ 333mhz welcome to overcloking your processor can be place at 2800 mhz as athlon xp3000+ without problem the power of A xp has a very hight temperature and need specialized CPU cooler there are some good models as zalman and igloo cooler firm although die temperature is 85 grad. celcius it can use up to 65.30 w as max power it means a 300w corpus will be welcome for it mother board on kt400 nforce 2 are optimum for this cpu we tried it on a server machine with mother board Gygabite on Raid... AMD XP 3200+ enters AMD into the 400Mhz arena
Review of AMD Athlon XP 3200+ / 2.2 GHz processor by Ecosimon

Advantages: A worthy cheaper rival to Pentium 4
Disadvantages: The AMD heatsink and fan is not good enough, and hard to attach to the motherboard

...The AMD XP3200+ is currently AMDs only processor capable of running on 400Mhz FSB motherboards without the need for overclocking, the processor is a socket A and you will need a compatible motherboard . Processors running on higher FSB (front side bus) speeds tend to get a better response when processing information, this is a big plus to consider when looking to upgrade to a AMD XP3200+ processor for your computer system. On most of todays socket A motherboards you will see that the processor frequency can be set at three different levels 133 for running 266mhz processors, 166 for running 333mhz processors and 200 for 400mhz processors, this is a must have piece of information that you will need to know especially when looking to purchase a processor, this is usually contained in your motherboards manual or at their official website... Don't live in the past
Review of Cyrix, Intel & AMD - CPU war by cjkace

Advantages: Low prices
Disadvantages: -

..., to the detriment of consumers. PR ratings are supposed to rate to an equivalent Intel chip - ie a Cyrix processor running at 120Mhz was supposed to perform the same as a Pentium 166, but unfortunately this was not the case. Don't be fooled into thinking however that the new AMD ratings are the same though. An Athlon XP1900 (actual clock speed 1.6GHz) is actually a direct comparison to the older Athlon and not the Pentium4. What AMD says is that if they were to continue manufacturing AMD processors based on the Thunderbird core (0.18 micron and no SSE2 instructions) then to reach AthlonXP performance would mean it would have to be clocked at 1.9Ghz. Due to the die shrink (down to 0.15 micron) and the addition of SSE2 instructions, it 'only' needs to run at 1.6Ghz to reach the equivalent performance. Confused? So are many people. That is what AMD... Read review

More Megahertz isnt More Money
Review of AMD K7 (Athlon) by LimpBizkitUK

Advantages: Cheap and fast compared to equivalent Intel chip
Disadvantages: Heat

...Ok, so when most people hear that I built my own computer with an AMD processor, they think whats an AMD, is it some cheap, slow, downmarket Intel? No. Reasons for buying - Most AMD processors are bought by more computer knowledgeable people, as they can make an AMD achieve what no pentium can do - overclocking. The other reasons why people buy the AMD's, is because of their speed, and low price. Speed - AMD Processors are classified by their equivalent Intel processors, so an AMD XP1800+ can do tasks at the same speed as a 1800MHz Intel processor, and an AMD XP2200+ can do tasks at the same speed as a 2200MHz Intel Pentium 4. Actual speeds of AMD's are different however to what their name suggests. An XP1800+ runs at 1.533GHz, and an XP2200+ runs at only 1.8GHz. It is the quality and caching on AMD boards however, that allow... Read review

Athlon Xp 2800+ - Still very nice
Review of AMD Athlon XP 2800+ / 2.08 GHz processor by mattsouthern

Advantages: Quick, Never an error, Very affordable
Disadvantages: NONE!

...I bought this processor nearly 18 months ago. This was before the Athlon 64s were around and when this CPU was a top of the line beast. It cost me around £160 but was well worth the money. I bought it OEM. This means that it did not come with the official AMD heatsink and fan but then I really didn't want that anyway. I always find these certified fans too noisy so I bought a Zalman CNPS6000-CU AMD cooler. If you have seen these then you will know they are not your typical heatsink and fan. They have a huge surface area and a large fan running at a very low RPM. This makes for efficient and quiet cooling. The CPU runs at around 55C and if you are playing games or a CPU demanding application, then you can turn the fan up to compensate. Since I have had this CPU for such a long time I would have expected to be playing games now... Read review

Best socket A processor
Review of AMD Athlon XP 2600+ / 2.08 GHz processor by kennygifford

Advantages: Fast, cheap, potential
Disadvantages: Misunderstood

...THis processor is the 2800+ model, which runs at 2.08Ghz. I was always a fan of AMD but when I started to really learn the differences between them and their Intel competition I started to LOVE them. I currently have this CPU running on my main PC, which I prefer to the Athlon 64 3000+ I also have. Granted the 64 has more number-crunching ability, however for the price and limitations it has, the XP soars forward. The temperature and voltage of this CPU may be relatively high, but for it's age it's a cracker. A bog-standard fan assembly will do fine, but personally I have bigger copper version, and my CPU hardly goes above 40*C. During gaming this CPU has no problems at all and keeps Battlefield 2 running online at full graphics. Obviously, with a little help from it's AGP card and memory friends. No CPU lag here, even with my... Read review

Almost perfect
Review of AMD K7 (Athlon) by dazzle

Advantages: Cheap, Fast, Definitely a good buy.
Disadvantages: Runs very hot and needs compatible motherboard and power supply

...AMD have certainly turned themselves around in recent times and now represent a viable option to Intel processors. Traditionally AMD have been strong in the "value"/budget segment of the market. The AMD Athlon is a processor that challenges Intel higher up the food chain. Advantages AMD Athlons are faster than Intel processors when comparing Mhz to Mhz. AMD Athlons are cheaper than Intel processors Mhz for Mhz. Possible pitfalls... AMD processors require motherboards with "Socket A". These are different to motherboards that support Intel processors and tend to be slightly more expensive. It is highly recommended that you use an AMD approved power supply with your AMD processor. If you don't you are liable to suffer from unexplainable crashes. This is because AMD processors run much hotter than Intel processors. It is very easy... Read review

Is the Athlon XP a P4 beater
Review of AMD AthlonXP by pkiddie

Advantages: Value for money, Speed.
Disadvantages: CPU Temperature

...Well in a word 'Yes!' I have an XP processor in my present computer, and it has been solid as a rock from the word go! AMD processors before the Athlon always had the stigma that they were never as good for games as the Intel equivalent, and to a degree, those feelings were true.. even the Celeron beat the K6-2 and K6-3 in games frame rates etc. This meant games which were responsive on the Celeron didn't have a hope on the equivalent K6. This made the AMD processor more of a business workhorse, coming out on top for all things business! Well things have certainly moved on since then, and ever since the introduction of the Athlon processor, tables have turned in AMD's favour. They have been working hard on pummelling resources into improving the floating point unit of the processor (the part of the processor that does all the number... Read review

1800 horsepower. Woooosssshhh.
Review of AMD AthlonXP by one47

Advantages: Fast, cheap, easy to upgrade
Disadvantages: Not Intel - Is that really a problem

...their products at work, and haven't looked back. --- Why "1800+" and what happened to MHz and GHz numbers? --- Intel have been numbering their processors and measuring their power in terms of Megaherts and Gigaherts (MHz and GHz). Until recently, so did the other chip makers. More recently, AMD realised that a processor from Intel labelled "1.8GHz" was only as powerful as an AMD chip labelled "1.6GHz" - An unfair comarison. AMD quite sensibly under the circumstances decided to start labelling their chips differently. An 1800+ is claimed to be equivalent to or better that an 1800MHz (1.8GHz Pentium IV processor) - So far their claims have proven broadly accurate. --- Overall --- Yippee! Wow! Super! Smashing! No regrets at-all. To do the upgrade myself, I had to buy: 1 x AthlonXP CPU (1800+ model.) 1 x Matching CPU fan 1 x Motherboard which... Read review
