speed machine cpu!
Review of AMD Duron by
craigy
Advantages: cutting edge speed for bargain price
Disadvantages: non
...the amd duron is an excellent choice for anyone thinking of upgrading it has cutting edge speed at budget prices and beats intels celeron and celeron flipchip with ease it is an excellent processor for gamers as i got a score of 5,333 in 3dmark 2000 i found this cpu to be very stable and worked well with all hardware i tried with it which most processor can definetly not do like the celeron crashes with a lot of glide games.
so if you want give the amd duron a try it definetly gives celeron a run for its money....

Almost perfect
Review of AMD K7 (Athlon) by
dazzle
Advantages: Cheap, Fast, Definitely a good buy.
Disadvantages: Runs very hot and needs compatible motherboard and power supply
...AMD have certainly turned themselves around in recent times and now represent a viable option to Intel processors.
Traditionally AMD have been strong in the "value"/budget segment of the market. The AMD Athlon is a processor that challenges Intel higher up the food chain.
Advantages
AMD Athlons are faster than Intel processors when comparing Mhz to Mhz.
AMD Athlons are cheaper than Intel processors Mhz for Mhz.
Possible pitfalls...
AMD processors require motherboards with "Socket A". These are different to motherboards that support Intel processors and tend to be slightly more expensive.
It is highly recommended that you use an AMD approved power supply with your AMD processor. If you don't you are liable to suffer from unexplainable crashes.
This is because AMD processors run much hotter than Intel processors. It is very easy...

AMD Duron kicks butt
Review of AMD Duron by
Kinny
Advantages: Duron is good for value.
Disadvantages: It has none.
...The AMD Duron initailly set for competition against the Intel Celeron offering the same level of performance offered at a similar price. But wait, this was what AMD set out to do with the Duron. In fact, the Duron is a duplicate of the AMD Thunderbird if you ask me. The Duron comes with 64KB of L2 cache you may think this isn't going to be enough compared with the 128KB on the Celeron. Well for those that think that, you are all wrong...in fact the Duron has more cache altogether compared with the Celeron. The Celeron has 32KB L1 cache but the Duron has a meaty 128KB on it's L1 cache. So who is better then??? AMD DURON!!! Many people may think that the Celeron is the better performer, but tests has proven that the AMD Duron is much much better than a Celeron. t the end of the day if you thinking about upgrading, my advice to you would...

Brilliant processor
Review of AMD Duron by
casper77
Advantages: cheap, excellent performance
Disadvantages: none
...I have recently upgraded to a AMD Duron processor and it was superb. Coupled it with a powerful ABIT KT7 motherboard, it delivered suprb performance and beats Pentium III of the equivalent rank. Having an unlocked processor and a bios that supports soft clock speed setting, I could deliver the maxium performance out of the processor with little risk damaging the processor. The speed of the processor can also be varied according to the season - I can run a bit faster when the day is cooler and vice versa.
The price is also very competitive compared to Celeron or Pentium III.
With good performance and good price, this is the processor I would go for.
Also, Duron/Althon has much better upgrability compared to INTEL counter part as AMD is going to support Socket A for a reasonable
amount of time to come....

NICE ONE!!!!
Review of AMD Thunderbird by
mowat
Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: none
...Overcloking AMD CPUs is different from Intel CPUs. All Intel CPUs are multiplier locked, i.e. adjusting the multiplier in BIOS has no effect. As such overclocking is done via FSB. For example, the Pentium 550E is multiplier 5.5 x 100 FSB = 550Mhz. Increasing to 133 FSB yields 5.5 x 133 FSB = 733Mhz. Motherboards for Intel CPUs supports a wide range of FSB to facilitate overcloking.
AMD CPUs on the other hand, is NOT multiplier locked. But motherboards for AMD CPUs support only single FSB. So overcloking is done by varying the multiplier while keeping the FSB constant. In short, Intel = play with FSB, AMD = play with multiplier.
Unfortunately, the new batch of CPUs named Athon Thunderbird and Duron is rumoured to be MULTIPLIER LOCKED. This means there is no way to overclock AMD CPUs at all. Tom's Hardware Guide (www...

Duron Vs. Celeron
Review of AMD Duron by
monkfish
Advantages: Fast, Good Quality, Value For Money
Disadvantages: None Really!
...Why do many people prefer Intel processors to AMD?? It was clearly demonstrated by the K6-2 and Athlon Processors that AMD is miles ahead of the rest for Speed, Quality, Stability and Value for money. Look at the lastest line of processors. AMD's Duron was created for Value and entry level PC users. Just by looking at the Price difference I immediatly decided on the AMD. With the AMD 600MHz costing under £70 ($95)and the celeron 600 costing over £150 ($205)I couldn't justify spending £150 on the Celeron. When I found how easy to install the processor and upgrade the system decided to upgrade my pentium celeron 433 MHz so I could compare the systems. I had them with exactly the same components. In Winbench the Duron System notched up a score of 139 while the celeron system only gained a score of 97. So my opinion is to forget Intel; SAVE...

Overclokable Duron - Get extra 200 MHz
Review of AMD Duron by
Lancer
Advantages: Another 200MHz for peanuts!
Disadvantages: Unsupported by AMD, only supported by OCUK
...The AMD Duron is the relatively new chip from AMD designed to be direct competition for Intel's time honoured Celeron chip. The Celeron is a decent cheap processor, but is nothing when compared to the AMD Duron. The duron is much faster, more stable and ultimately (very important when aimed at this end of the market) is much cheaper. The only thing the celeron has in its favour is the ability to overclock better than the Duron.
This has all changed. Overclockers UK (www.overclockers.co.uk) have modified the AMD Duron chips themselves to unlock the multiplier value and allow exceptionally easy overclocking. They offer a range of Duron chips, each of which has been modified and tested to run at the new value. The lower end of the spectrum offers a Duron 700 which has been guaranteed to run at 900MHz and the site says it is possible...

Its Cooking ........
Review of AMD Thunderbird by
totalweb
Advantages: fast, runs without any problems,
Disadvantages: decent internal fan needed or you will have a cooking processor
...Instead of getting a Pentium 3 or 4 with my new PC i decided to go with AMD as I have heard a lot of good things about their previous chips such as the Duron. Also I find that Intel are ripping us off somewhat with the performance of their chips and those blue guys on the advert? It makes me wonder..........
With my new PC I got an AMD Thunderbird 850MhZ processor. Its speed is unbelievable and running on the same MhZ a PIII would not be as fast. The only problem is with a powerful processor comes the need of a cooling system. In my PC i have a very large and NOISY cooling fan. The PC can be quite irratating with the noise. Also make sure there a lot of air flow space around your PC on your desk because cool air needs to get in the pc to help stop the AMD Thunderbird from frying like bacon.
I would seriously not reccommend...

AMD K6 2
Review of AMD - K6-2 by
ia_young
Advantages: Price, very cheap!
Disadvantages: None
...this home and in “safe mode”, that’s a joke! I ran the patch, hooray it worked!
The AMD website was really easy to use and I found what I was looking for in about five minutes. I don’t know what their customer services is like, but if it is as good as the website then it must be quite good.
** My Thoughts **
Although you probably can’t get the AMD chip that I purchased if you are looking for a cheap upgrade to your CPU, AMD chips are perfect. The only thing that you need to do is check that your motherboard can accept the chip that you want to put in to it as the designs for the chip interfaces have changed and now the AMD and Intel interfaces are different. The latest CPUs that AMD are producing are the Duron series, which are very cheap and the more upmarket Athlon CPUs....
