Dual Athlon MP motherboard from Gigabyte
Review of Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW+ - motherboard - ATX - AMD-760 MPX by positivereflect

Advantages: Supports all Athlon MP processors, CPU plug and play,
Disadvantages: Not many overclock options, tempremantal onboard raid, registered memory recommended

...Deciding to upgrade my computer as i could not do many things at once, i looked into the options available. My current pc at the time being an Amd Athlon XP 2600+ (which is still pretty fast), i was after something faster but not too expensive (and as i am an AMD fanatic it had to be an AMD). After much searching and forum checking, i had three options: 1/ Upgrade to Athlon 64 Pros: Newest processor offering from AMD, PCI express on most motherboards, Dual Channel memory support, My current memory will work fine. Cons: Might mean purchase of new video card, Might mean purchase of new Power supply, 2/ Upgrade to AMD Opteron Pros: Newest server/workstation based processor offering from AMD, PCI express on most motherboards, Dual Channel memory support, Cons: Might mean purchase of new video card, Might mean purchase of new Power... Almost perfect
Review of AMD K7 (Athlon) by dazzle

Advantages: Cheap, Fast, Definitely a good buy.
Disadvantages: Runs very hot and needs compatible motherboard and power supply

...AMD have certainly turned themselves around in recent times and now represent a viable option to Intel processors. Traditionally AMD have been strong in the "value"/budget segment of the market. The AMD Athlon is a processor that challenges Intel higher up the food chain. Advantages AMD Athlons are faster than Intel processors when comparing Mhz to Mhz. AMD Athlons are cheaper than Intel processors Mhz for Mhz. Possible pitfalls... AMD processors require motherboards with "Socket A". These are different to motherboards that support Intel processors and tend to be slightly more expensive. It is highly recommended that you use an AMD approved power supply with your AMD processor. If you don't you are liable to suffer from unexplainable crashes. This is because AMD processors run much hotter than Intel processors. It is very easy... Read review

Review of AMD Duron by craigy

Advantages: cutting edge speed for bargain price
Disadvantages: non

...the amd duron is an excellent choice for anyone thinking of upgrading it has cutting edge speed at budget prices and beats intels celeron and celeron flipchip with ease it is an excellent processor for gamers as i got a score of 5,333 in 3dmark 2000 i found this cpu to be very stable and worked well with all hardware i tried with it which most processor can definetly not do like the celeron crashes with a lot of glide games. so if you want give the amd duron a try it definetly gives celeron a run for its money.... AMD Vs. Intel
Review of AMD K7 (Athlon) by rob1979

Advantages: Fast, reliable and cheaper than intel
Disadvantages: None that come to mind

...Athlon Vs. Intel An opinion from an insider: I have been very impressed with AMD ever since the launch of their K6 series chips. They have always offered excellent chips at affordable prices, but have never had the same prestige as Intel. However with their new range of Athlon chips i truly believe we could see a change of fortunes, with intel being on the back foot. Their Athlon chips are truly remarkable and offer excellent speed and reliability at a price significantly lower then intel's equivalent, usually around about £30 - £40 per chip cheaper. I know run both my office and home PC's on the AMD K6-2 and Athlon series chips and would recommend them to anybody.... Read review

Pentium seems better
Review of AMD K7 (Athlon) by broksababe

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...I had an old computer with a pentium inside, however I replaced it with a amd k6, which is 475. I also have a DVD drive and find that the amd struggles sometimes especially when you are using this or when you try to run faster games.I was also shown the difference and the size of a pentium to amd is unbelievable!!, it looks so cheap and nasty and very fragile!! However under normal operating it performs well, pretty well. The good thing really is that you can get the speed and performance of an expensive processor at a cheaper price.Overall I will say yes its good but really if you can afford to get a pentium.... AMD Duron kicks butt
Review of AMD Duron by Kinny

Advantages: Duron is good for value.
Disadvantages: It has none.

...The AMD Duron initailly set for competition against the Intel Celeron offering the same level of performance offered at a similar price. But wait, this was what AMD set out to do with the Duron. In fact, the Duron is a duplicate of the AMD Thunderbird if you ask me. The Duron comes with 64KB of L2 cache you may think this isn't going to be enough compared with the 128KB on the Celeron. Well for those that think that, you are all wrong...in fact the Duron has more cache altogether compared with the Celeron. The Celeron has 32KB L1 cache but the Duron has a meaty 128KB on it's L1 cache. So who is better then??? AMD DURON!!! Many people may think that the Celeron is the better performer, but tests has proven that the AMD Duron is much much better than a Celeron. t the end of the day if you thinking about upgrading, my advice to you would... AMD K2 500
Review of AMD - K2 500 by Jester

Advantages: Fast, reliable and value for money
Disadvantages: None so far

...I recently upgraded from a Cyrix MII 366 to the AMD K2 500. The first noticeable change I found was that I was no longer getting the Windows general protection faults that seemed to be occurring on a daily basis with the Cyrix processor. The second major change I noticed was the change in quality of the graphics and sound which is most probably down to the 3D technology incorporated into the AMD processor. With the Cyrix I was still getting jumpy graphics and sound on some of the old games even though the specifications for the game where well above what was recommended but that all stopped after installing the AMD processor. I did a benchmark test with the Cyrix processor installed and the CPU was running at 250Mhz, very disappointing as I was expecting at least 350Mhz from a 366Mhz processor. I did the same benchmark test with the AMD... Read review

Don't live in the past
Review of Cyrix, Intel & AMD - CPU war by cjkace

Advantages: Low prices
Disadvantages: -

...Processor speeds have accelerated at their greatest rates over the last twelve months, with AMD hitting the 1 Gigahertz mark first, but Intel hitting the 2 Gigahertz ahead. Poor old Cyrix (now owned by Via Technologies) were left far, far behind. In terms of market, Cyrix are aiming at the ultra low end and embedded systems, leaving AMD and Intel to fight out the desktop and server market. AMD can claim to have captured a large percentage of the desktop market especially at the budget end and mid-range, while Intel seem to be left with the top end and the server market. Unfortunately for AMD, Intel hit the 'magic' 2 Gigahertz first, while AMD could 'only' manage 1.6Ghz, which prompted AMD to re-name their processors and bring back the infamous PR (Performance Rating), something which Cyrix first introduced some years back... AMD XP 3200+ enters AMD into the 400Mhz arena
Review of AMD Athlon XP 3200+ / 2.2 GHz processor by Ecosimon

Advantages: A worthy cheaper rival to Pentium 4
Disadvantages: The AMD heatsink and fan is not good enough, and hard to attach to the motherboard

...The AMD XP3200+ is currently AMDs only processor capable of running on 400Mhz FSB motherboards without the need for overclocking, the processor is a socket A and you will need a compatible motherboard . Processors running on higher FSB (front side bus) speeds tend to get a better response when processing information, this is a big plus to consider when looking to upgrade to a AMD XP3200+ processor for your computer system. On most of todays socket A motherboards you will see that the processor frequency can be set at three different levels 133 for running 266mhz processors, 166 for running 333mhz processors and 200 for 400mhz processors, this is a must have piece of information that you will need to know especially when looking to purchase a processor, this is usually contained in your motherboards manual or at their official website...
