AMD Opteron 165 "AMDs gem of overclockabilty"
Review of AMD Dual-Core Opteron 165 / 1.8 GHz processor by
krille282
Advantages: So many...stability, overclocks insanely & most bang for the buck.
Disadvantages: None except that Intel C2Ds now yields better performance.
...statements from my side to the reader/s). If you however feel that this review contains false information just comment on it so that I will get the chance to edit (if your proven right of course).
Finally the Opteron 165 have one other feature that it´s entry level X2 siblings are a bit short of & thats probably why its so fast in so many applications & benchmarks that i have runned
curious yet? its the doubled L2 cache (2x1MB)
FYI I´m currently running this gem @ 2.7GHz (that´s a good 900Mhz OC) & the temp is so low compared to my former AMD A64 3200+ (Venice) around 15 degrees celsius lower on the average.
I can also add that I bought this one just to OC the heck out of it, so immediately after the break-in time of 3 days I ramped up the speed adjusted the various settings in the BIOS & ran PRIME95, ORTHOS & 3DMARK06 I was utterly...

Budget gaming chip with overclocking potential
Review of AMD Opteron 146 / 2 GHz processor by
ladforce
Advantages: Price, Performance
Disadvantages: Single Core
...This chip is from AMD's last generation architecture using the 939 socket. Due to the new AM2 architecture being released, socket 939 chips have plummeted in price as they are no longer cutting edge. This means there are bargains to be had and this opteron is one of those chips.
Around 60 pounds buys you a single core 2Ghz processor which is nothing special. What you are not told is these chips actually use server grade silicon and have 1Mb level 2 cache as opposed to lesser grade silicon and 512Kb level 2 cache found in the desktop equivalent. This, in theory, should allow the chip to be overclocked more heavily and therefore perform much better.
At stock the chip is quick and performs well in games. However, this chip is not bought to run at stock its bought to be heavily overclocked. Loading up the chip into my pc, which uses...

Dual Athlon MP motherboard from Gigabyte
Review of Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW+ - motherboard - ATX - AMD-760 MPX by
positivereflect
Advantages: Supports all Athlon MP processors, CPU plug and play,
Disadvantages: Not many overclock options, tempremantal onboard raid, registered memory recommended
...Deciding to upgrade my computer as i could not do many things at once, i looked into the options available.
My current pc at the time being an Amd Athlon XP 2600+ (which is still pretty fast), i was after something faster but not too expensive (and as i am an AMD fanatic it had to be an AMD).
After much searching and forum checking, i had three options:
1/ Upgrade to Athlon 64
Pros:
Newest processor offering from AMD,
PCI express on most motherboards,
Dual Channel memory support,
My current memory will work fine.
Cons:
Might mean purchase of new video card,
Might mean purchase of new Power supply,
2/ Upgrade to AMD Opteron
Pros:
Newest server/workstation based processor offering from AMD,
PCI express on most motherboards,
Dual Channel memory support,
Cons:
Might mean purchase of new video card,
Might mean...

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz
Review of AMD Athlon 64 3500+ / 2.2 GHz processor by
china_wolf
Advantages: 64-bit future proofed, speedy, excellent value for money
Disadvantages: Dual core AMD 64 CPUS are faster... but hey it would make this CPU cheaper so it's not all bad!
...Go on admit it. You know you want a faster processor, but every time you check the prices you gasp in horror at what the current prices stand at. This CPU is no different, it is expensive to many consumers' minds and many cannot find a good enough reason to part with their hard earned money for this processor. Sure it's fast, but not is it worth the investment? Let's find out shall we?
Before I tell you about this CPU, let me give you a basic brief history into the CPU wars which led to the creation of this CPU. It was thought that the higher clocking the CPU was, the faster it would be and the more heat it would generate. To combat this, the leading industry rivals Intel and AMD (you know them right?) started to make their CPU's use smaller, more efficient manufacturing processes. Making the core of the CPU smaller and more compact...

AMD XP 3200+ enters AMD into the 400Mhz arena
Review of AMD Athlon XP 3200+ / 2.2 GHz processor by
Ecosimon
Advantages: A worthy cheaper rival to Pentium 4
Disadvantages: The AMD heatsink and fan is not good enough, and hard to attach to the motherboard
...The AMD XP3200+ is currently AMDs only processor capable of running on 400Mhz FSB motherboards without the need for overclocking, the processor is a socket A and you will need a compatible motherboard .
Processors running on higher FSB (front side bus) speeds tend to get a better response when processing information, this is a big plus to consider when looking to upgrade to a AMD XP3200+ processor for your computer system.
On most of todays socket A motherboards you will see that the processor frequency can be set at three different levels 133 for running 266mhz processors, 166 for running 333mhz processors and 200 for 400mhz processors, this is a must have piece of information that you will need to know especially when looking to purchase a processor, this is usually contained in your motherboards manual or at their official...

The AMD Athlon and should you buy one.
Review of AMD K7 (Athlon) by
mattmajor
Advantages: great performance/price ratio
Disadvantages: slow cache at 0.4x for 800 megahertz
...Last march, when I was shopping for a new computer chip to replace my worn pentium 200, the favored chips seemed to be firmly on Intel's side. The pentium II's and celerons, while costing slightly more than the AMD k6 II's, boasted significantly higher floating point performance (needed for computer games like quake 3 and scientific/professional applications). Even though the AMD K6 II's offered greater integer performance (spreadsheets and word processors), I had to go with a celeron as it offered a greater price/performance ratio.
How times have changed. With the release of the Athlon in the middle of 1999, AMD has finally turned the tables on Intel. Here is why:
Strengths:
Clock Speed
The AMD Athlon, with its basic architecture similar to the Alpha (a powerful and expensive CPU used mostly for servers), is scalable to very...
