...I applied for the american express platinum card mainly being because of the initial offer of the 5% cash back for the first three months. after the three months it then goes to 1.5% which is alright when compared to other cashback cards on the market at the moment. I use my american express basically like a debit card and always always pay it off in full so you can benefit from the cashback. Cashback is paid annually from the date you got accepted for the card which is good because it builds up and you get a nice chunk back (depending on how much you spent on the card). You can only be accepted for an american express platinum card if you are earning atleast £20,000 per annum. American express is actually accepted in more places now than people may think so there are a lot more chances for you to be earning that lovely...

The online application form was extremely easy to fill out and although you don't get an instant decision I received my credit card through the post about three weeks later. Like all credit cards nowadays the card is chip and pin and I received my pin number under seperate cover to lower the chances of fraud. Vanquis Bank and Credit Card

Advantages: Gives credit to those who wouldn't otherwise get it.
Disadvantages: Very high interest, terrible customer service.

......though in the end we wished we'd just had a nice meal with close family and not spent the unceccesary costs!!! BUT anyway.... We used up our £300 credit limit, then realised we actually couldn't pay anything more than the minimum payment that month, so it got paid, with an interest fee...of exactly the same amount as we had paid...we soon realised if we were to pay off minimum payment each month, we would never ever ever pay off the card as obviously if the interest is the same as the minimum payment, it counteracts the payment you are making!!! ...I've just recently started working as part of a collections team for a bank, making collections on missing credit card payments and other payments to do with credit cards (over-limit charges, late fees, arrears). Previous to start the job I didn't know all that much about credit cards, I knew my mother had one, or two store based ones with some reward schemes that she paid off the whole balance at the end of every month, only spending 30 or so on. To me that seemed really simple, she had a limit, she knew what she spent she paid it off at the end of every month in case she wanted to use it again and as far as I was concerned this was how credit cards worked.
