There's nothing precious about this Georgia blueswoman except her name. Bryant's first all-solo album is packed with stomping blues and spirituals built on her own fusion of fingerpicking, one-chord boogie, Piedmont-style strumming and Afro-American fife-and-drum-band rhythms. She puts all that in service of a dry-but-mellow voice that dances up into its thin high register to enhance the joy in her percolating melodies. She's happiest when singing the Lord's praises in "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Don't Let the Devil Ride", but the graceful ragtime instrumental "Georgia Buck" is equally blithe. And her blues, including "Broke and Ain't Got a Dime" and "Black Rat Swing", are full of sassy energy. The heavy beat she pulls out of her Gibson electric on "Don't You Wanna Jump" sounds straight from Mississippi, splitting the difference between John Lee Hooker and Jessie Mae Hemphill. But what's truly amazing about this album, produced by North Mississippi Allstars road manager Amos Harvey, is that although Bryant is only 60, it sounds as if her repertoire and delivery have been completely unaffected by the past half-century. This is the real country blues. --Ted Drozdowski ... less

The epic battle of Gettysburg, fought over a three-day period at the beginning of July 1863, was bloody, brutal, and bitter--making it ideally suited to the History Channel's testosterone-fueled documentary approach. Viewers familiar with offerings like Battles B.C., Patton 360, and multiple others will recognize this style: loud and kinetic, flashy and unsubtle, Gettysburg blends reenactments, photos, CGI (used to depict and dissect the weaponry that made the Civil War's body count so high in general, with some 50,000 casualties at Gettysburg alone), Sam Rockwell's macho voice-over narration, actors reading the reminiscences of the participants, and a variety of expert talking heads holding forth. For the most part, it works; historians and Civil War buffs have already noted some of the factual errors, important omissions, and other problems with the material, but those less versed in the details will come away from this 94-minute program (which was executive produced by noted directors Tony and Ridley Scott) with a good deal of information about the confrontation that inspired President Abraham Lincoln's immortal address, referenced near the end of the documentary. Typical of the History Channel, some of this information is delivered in hyperbolic, melodramatic fashion. Gettysburg was "the largest battle ever fought in the Western Hemisphere," while the cannons that blasted away at Gen. Robert E. Lee's men during the fateful attack known as Pickett's Charge was "the largest artillery barrage ever" in that same sphere; numerous other events are the biggest, the most iconic, the most important, and so on. The overheated writing does Gettysburg no favors, but director Adrian Moat and the other filmmakers' decision to focus on a variety of individuals on both sides was a wise one. Thus we learn about characters like Maj. Gen. Dan Sickles of the North, who had killed his wife's lover before the war and successfully used "the first plea of temporary insanity in U.S. history" to win acquittal; Pvt. Amos Humiston, another Yank, who died on the streets of the Pennsylvania town with nothing to identify him except a photo of his three sons; Confederate Lt. Gen. Dick Ewell, who had vowed revenge after losing a leg earlier in the war; Col. James Wallace, a Marylander who was both a Union officer and slave owner; and numerous others. In the end, it's these portraits that help distinguish the program from the many, many others of its ilk. --Sam Graham ... less

Following the successful first instalment, the grandly titled Pure Genius 2 continues in much the same vein as its predecessor. Both discs are crammed with some of the best singer-songwriters throughout the ages with contemporary artists such as Tori Amos ("Cornflake Girl") and Aqualung ("Strange & Beautiful") nestling nicely among the likes of JJ Cale ("Cocaine"), Stephen Stills of Crosby & Nash fame ("Johnny's Garden") and The Velvet Underground ("I'm Sticking With You"). There are welcome inclusions from the decade that song writing forgot--the 1980, with Prince's definitive power ballad "Purple Rain" and the chirpy go-lucky "Chuck E's in Love" by Rickie Lee Jones. For those that have rarely strayed past Badly Drawn Boy or Alanis Morissette, Pure Genius 2 will provide a valuable insight into the romantic world of the singer-songwriter, as heard through the ages. --Georgina Collins ... less

It's hard to hear The Walk from end to end without wishing the brothers Hanson could go back in time and undo the career-stunting megahit that was "MmmBop." If it wasn't for that 1997 song, catchy and guilty-pleasurable as it was, the boys would be well on their way to winning over the kind of committed audience a disc as focused and fine-tuned as this one deserves. There's nothing particularly high-minded here (excepting the single "Great Divide," a downloadable track whose sales will benefit an African orphanage), but each song radiates a level of pop-rock accomplishment that surpasses most anything you'll hear on top 40 radio. Hanson, in fact, has more in common with acts like Fountain of Wayne and Amos Lee these days than anybody you'll see strutting across a TV screen in skin-tight pants. Highlights on a disc without a single dud include "Georgia," contemplatively sung by Taylor, and "Running Man," an addictive Squeeze-meets-Beatles rock ditty co-written by Zac. In its 15-year history, Hanson has won the right to talk the talk about the hardships and satisfactions of maturing musically; The Walk backs that talk up beautifully. --Tammy La Gorce ... less

It's not often you get to hear Mabel Scott wail "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus" and Bessie Smith pour it all out on "At the Christmas Ball" alongside Lightnin' Hopkins's blistering "Santa" or Amos Milburn's classic "Let's Make Christmas Merry, Baby," but that's the mile-wide shape of this good-times, 15-track compilation. Swingin' Louis Jordan is likewise featured on "Santa Claus, Santa Claus," while Kings Albert and B. B., John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Weatherspoon, and Lowell Fulson sharpen their axes for a mess of Christmas blues. Also included are cuts by Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets, Floyd Dixon, and Eddie C. Campbell, whose "Santa's Messin' with the Kid" is as funny as it is rockin'. A fantastic showcase for blues guitar and vocals, this album should please any blues fan in your house. --Martin Keller ... less
