Delta Hotel 42 The Damrak Amsterdam City Centre
Review of Delta Hotel Amsterdam City Centre, Amsterdam by  Serenfach

Advantages: Superb Central Location
Disadvantages: Strict on Room Checkout Times

...street, it is an excellent location to relax over a good breakfast whilst watching the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. If you just fancy a snack, a few doors down from the hotel is 'Pizza M Slice' serving the best (yep you've guessed it) pizza in the city. A must try. If you are travelling to Amsterdam by car (not recommended) the hotel has arranged a 15% discount off parking fees at a car park a few minutes away. Parking is very expensive in the city, and as the public transport is excellent and the majority of attractions are close by, a car really is not needed. For those of a sporty nature there is a modern fitness centre 20 meters from the hotel, where, in cooperation with the fitness centre, there is a discount for guests. All in all, the Hotel Delta is an ideal choice for the budget-minded traveler, very reasonable rates... Read review

AMSTERDAM, THE CITY OF FREEDOM
Review of Amsterdam in general by  funkyoz

Advantages: information about Amsterdam from a Dutch girl
Disadvantages: might be a bit long

...After my op about London, I got a 'request' about writing an op about 'Amsterdam through the eyes of a Dutch girl', so here it is. I hope you will get ideas from it, if you always wanted to go to Amsterdam, just go, it is worth it. AMSTERDAM ------ Amsterdam, the city so loved, well, almost worshipped by people who aren't from the Netherlands. Amsterdam is known worldwide for it's open and free culture, you have heard the rumours; you can get weed on every street corner, the people walk on clogs and traditional clothing, the red light district, the sex museum, I could go on for ages. Some of those rumours are actually true..we do walk on clogs! No, just kidding, but it is a fact that Amsterdam is very, very open, and you can get weed or hash on every street corner. If that is a good thing, is up to you. I personally hate to shop... Read review

Amsterdam-the Cosmopolitan City !
Review of Amsterdam (Netherlands) by  ashford

Advantages: Cosmopoltan,liberal,friendly environment
Disadvantages: Quite expensive

...A 17th century visitor to Amsterdam wrote, "... It appears at first not to be a city of any particular people but to be common to all." The city has been a haven for refugees, particularly from political and religious persecution. It still has the reputation of being the most tolerant of cities and the local residents display little of the nationalistic claustrophobia that is prevalent in s parts of the world. As Baruch Spinova, himself the son of a Jewish émigré put it, "... In this city second to none, men of every nation and sect live together in the utmost harmony." A good part of the city is a living museum of chocolate-box, gabled, 17th century houses, whose elegant facades are perfectly balanced by their shifting reflections in the smooth water of the canals. Houses are often narrow because when they were built taxes... Read review

Freedom of the City - The Amsterdam Pass
Review of Getting around in Amsterdam by  Newfloridian

Advantages: Tremendous value
Disadvantages: Poorly advertised

...We recently spent a delightful few days in Amsterdam on a City break holiday. Even though it was October, the weather was wet and cold, we filled our time with a variety of activities. We had no problems booking our flights and found a beautiful hotel right in the middle of the action. Despite planning, reading guide books and asking friends and travel agents it is often a problem navigating the transport system and choosing from the list of sights to see and things to do. We were lucky to find “The Amsterdam Pass” on our first day – a scheme run by the Amsterdam Tourist Board. We found their office in the square opposite Central Station. It is available in a 1-, 2- and 3-day version and provides travel on the City’s transport system (trams, buses and the underground Metro – although the latter does not service much of tourist... Tulip Inn Amsterdam West - Cheep & Cheerful
Review of Tulip Inn City West, Amsterdam by  Paula_23_uk

Advantages: Cheap, Cheerful and Clean
Disadvantages: Bit far out from centre and good 15 mins walk to tram stop down dark canal path

...Inn Amsterdam West. Coming and going from the hotel is easy as there are staff on reception 24 hours a day. If it is late, you have to ring a night bell but the response is immediate. There are 2 lifts to all floors and an electronic paper stand nearby at an extra cost. Overall, I had a wonderful first trip in Amsterdam and a wonderful stay in this cheap and cheerful hotel. I would recommend this hotel to all budget travellers, groups/students etc but not to families or the elderly. I am returning to Amsterdam in May 2006 with my partner but am staying nearer the city centre in the floating hotel, the Amstel Botel and so will let you all know what that is like when I return. I hope this review has been helpful and teases you into visiting the wonderful city of Amsterdam.... Read review

Perfect break in Amsterdam's Crowne Plaza
Review of Crowne Plaza City Centre, Amsterdam by  andymcf

Advantages: Location is superb. Very comfortable, great facilities and superb staff!
Disadvantages: Nothing, apart from the uncertainty regarding the on-line booking

...Amsterdam is home to three Crowne Plaza hotels; there's one at Schiphol airport, there's the "Americaine", and then there's the "Crowne Plaza City Centre". It's at the latter that we recently had the pleasure of staying. Five minutes' walk from the Centraal (sic) Station which, itself, is a one-stop, 3.90 Euro, journey from Schiphol airport, I thought that its location was absolutely ideal. This review breaks the mould - amongst other things. I am usually travelling with my wife, Amanda, and the nearly-three-years-old baby Josh. Amsterdam, however, is no place for a toddler and it was thus that I found myself on a trip away with two good friends, Mark and Chris. Oh dear! Mathematician that I am, I feel an equation coming on.....Three blokes + Amsterdam = Trouble! Let me say from the outset that this was a really superb hotel. We... Read review

Amsterdam - A tourists guide
Review of Amsterdam in general by  Jennyrose

Advantages: Easily accessible from UK, Cheap flights/coach transport.
Disadvantages: Small city and not many maps so you get easily lost

...Many people like to invest in a short city break to go and relax from their daily working lives. Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands is a good example of a city break. This is what I'm going to write my review about. I recently visited Amsterdam in February 2005 on a mini cruise and compiled information to write this review. Take a map and remember where you visited as the streets look the same and you can find yourself walking in circles. One of the main reasons why UK tourists visit Netherlands is because it is extremely close to home. People decide to stay in Amsterdam because of the wonderful sights and culture; the Dutch inhabitants are very friendly and love tourists when they try to speak Dutch, it shows that the tourists appreciate the language and culture and have bothered to learn it. It shows that UK tourists don... Read review

NH City Fun
Review of NH Amsterdam City Centre, Amsterdam by  J-FloCo

Advantages: Close to town, Quiet, Nice rooms
Disadvantages: Expensive bar

...We had immense trouble deciding on a hotel for my husband's birthday break in Amsterdam. We're trying to find a reasonably priced hotel that wasn't too shabby and in a decent location. After reviewing all the options, we went for the NH City Centre, if only because of it's 1920's styling and proximity to town. We were not disappointed. The hotel is lovely with each room finished beautifully, if you like the modern thing (and we do!). The overall atmosphere is very calm and serene. It took us forever to find the hotel, but that may have been because I insisted, as I had been to Amsterdam a couple of times before, that finding our way around would be easy, we could walk there and we didn't need a map. About an hour later we finally found the back of the hotel, exhausted from dragging our suitcases up and down a zillion canals... Read review

More to Amsterdam than Just Drugs & Sex
Review of Amsterdam (Netherlands) by  bunny711

Advantages: a variety of activities; English-speaking; friendly people; good museums; interesting night life
Disadvantages: not car-friendly; bicycles have right of way; changeable weather

...When you think of Amsterdam do you immediately conjure up an image of a hashish-filled hippie haven with hustlers lurking behind glass windows and sex shops everywhere? While this is, of course, all a reality, there is much more to Amsterdam. Often tourists jet into Amsterdam for a weekend, stay in the expensive hotels and canal boats in the noisy city centre, and leave with the impression that Amsterdam is only a Red Light District - although an interesting one at that. But just a stone’s throw away lies an expanse of pastoral fields and villages. If you stay in and around Amsterdam, like us, you can get to see and experience the city of Amsterdam and also easily explore other areas in the Netherlands. Amsterdam is the perfect base to explore other areas close by, which makes for a holiday with a lot of different things to do... Read review

Amsterdam- A Unique Place!
Review of Amsterdam (Netherlands) by  ukusa

Advantages: Multi-cultural, fairly compact and easy to get around
Disadvantages: Sometimes the whiff of cannabis can give you a headache

...Amsterdam is an absolutely unique city. It is vibrant, a treasure trove of extraordinary artistic riches and a living history ov the last 900 years! As a quick break to celebrate our anniversary, my husband and I decided to head to Amsterdam. Neither of us had been before to tour and we were looking forward to a relaxing break from our busy lives. We took an early Monday morning flight with KLM. The flight was on time, smooth and quick. From the Schiphol airport you can either take a taxi into Amsterdam (appox. 25-30 Euros) or take the train to Central Station (3.30 Euros one way). We decided on the later as we had time to spare before we could check into the hotel. We got our tickets quickly (Two ways- 1- If you have Euro change you can buy them for the vending machine or 2- Stand in line to buy your tickets... Read review
