My Amsterdam experience

Advantages: Fun, lots to see, easy to get to, clean
Disadvantages: A bit seedy and very cold in winter

...I've been to Amsterdam Airport more times than I can remember. Living in Cardiff, taking the KLM flight to Schiphol and changing was quicker than going all the way to London. But I'd never actually left the airport, I was always just there in transit. To be honest, I'd never felt any great pull to leave the airport and look around the city. I love culture but I'd never thought of Amsterdam as having lots of old churches and museums for me to look around. I'd always associated it more with the Red Light District and 'coffeeshops' which didn't really interest me. Then I got a call from a friend saying that she was planning a girls trip to Amsterdam. 'How do I get out of this one' I thought. Another friend persuaded me, saying that she would accompany me to the 'boring' parts while the rest of them drank to their hearts...

Night at the Museum

Advantages: Great comedy and pure entertainment
Disadvantages: a little slow to begin.. but not for long though.

...Director: Shawn Levy Producers: Shawn Levy and Stephen Sommers. Writer: Milan Trenc, Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon. Stars: Ben Stiller, Carla Gugino, Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Bill Cobbs, Jake Cherry, Charlie MurphyRami Malek, Pierfrancesco Favino,Ricky Gervais, Patrick Gallagher, Robin Williams and Kim Raver Released in Late 2006 this comedy, (I believe is based on a 1993 novel by Milan Trenc), revolved around a Museum and its mystical effects on a night watchman. **BRIEF PLOT** In New York city's Museum of Natural History Lawrence 'Larry' Daley, (played by Ben Stiller) begins a job as a night watchman, mainly to gain the respect of his son Nick, (played by Jake Cherry). Larry has had many dead end jobs in the passed, failing at all he tries, and is so terrified that Nick will prefer spending time with his...

Jolly Carlton Hotel - Amsterdam

Advantages: Friendly staff, modern decor, lots of handy facilities, great location
Disadvantages: Rooms are a bit on the small side and cramped

...minutes, and if you go in the other direction, for about 10 minutes, you have the Heineken experience, Hard Rock Café, The Van Gogh Museum and lots of other museums and tourist attractions, so I really think that this hotel is in the perfect location if there are lots of things that you want to do and see around the centre of Amsterdam. All in all I had a wonderful stay at the hotel. The staff were really friendly, the room was nice and modern and had everything we needed, and it was in a wonderful location. The room was a little on the small side, and the mini bar and room service were too costly for us to justify, but it was a very nice hotel. The room rate did seem a little on the expensive side for a hotel, but it was actually one of the cheapest ones we found that was in the centre of Amsterdam. The thing you also have to remember is...

Heineken Experience, Amsterdam

Advantages: Free Heineken
Disadvantages: None

...*** The Heineken Experience - Amsterdam *** I believe this was formerley called The Heineken Brewery Where Is It? Heineken Experience Stadhouderskade 78 1072 AE Amsterdam The Netherlands Tel: +31 (0)20 523 96 66 www.heinekenexperience.com Has excellent tram links which stop just outside the museum. When Open? Open Tuesdays - Sundays 10.00 - 18.00. Cash desk closes at 17.00. Closed on 25th December and 1st January. What Is It? A large building which tells you the history about how Heineken was brought about. Would suit ages 18 and above in my opinion. Entry: 10 euros per person. Under 18's are only admitted if accompanied by an adult. Why Go? On a recent long weekend to Amsterdam with two good friends, we stumbled upon the Heineken Experience. Being keen to experience...

The Booth Museum, Brighton

Advantages: Free admission, lots to see
Disadvantages: None for me

...The Booth Museum is located on Brighton's suburban back streets well away from the town centre but having said that it is on Dyke Road (the A2010) which is one of the major routes through the town and so it is relatively easy to find. The museum is named after the Victorian natural historian Edward Thomas Booth who spent much of his life in Brighton. Primarily it houses his personal collection of stuffed birds but there are also animals, insects, fossils and skeletons. These collections were amassed during his lifetime and contain over half a million different specimens. He lived between 1840 and 1890. Like most Victorian naturalists of the time he was an avid collector. It seems odd nowadays to think that someone that was considered to be such a lover of these creatures should hunt them down and shoot them. However we need to...

I <3 The Heart of Amsterdam!

Advantages: Cheap, friendly and nice atmos
Disadvantages: My Scooby Doo i.d card was stolen

...It doesn't get more central than the heart of Amsterdam, which is about 30 yards into the vibrant red light district. I would urge people to take the other review with a pinch of salt, bearing in mind that this is more suited to young people who are going to Amsterdam to generally get wrecked. Having said that, it will suit anyone, as it is a hotel and hostel, with the choice of rooms or dormitories with up to 10 beds. The rooms are well priced and will set you back 200 euros or so for a week. The dorm rooms are more modestly priced and can be snapped up for the bargain price of 20 euros a night, leaving you with more spending money. I generally found the place to be friendly, safe and clean, all for an unbelievably cheap price. It may be better to try and book out entire dorms, as this removes the risk of there being any weird strangers...

Camping in Amsterdam

Advantages: Cheap public transport, world renowned culture, very friendly city
Disadvantages: Some dodgy areas, reckless cyclists!

...of the weekend, we visited the Van Gogh museum, the diamond museum, and took a canal boat trip - all of which were experiences in themselves and deserve separate reviews - suffice to say that Amsterdam is small enough to be able to pack a lot of sightseeing into 3 full days, and we would definitely go back in the summer. The only disadvantages we experienced were that cyclists have priority and you need eyes in the back of your head sometimes to avoid getting entangled with them, and the time we stumbled across the red light district was not the most pleasant part of our visit, but these were minor inconveniences! All in all, a fantastic, cheap trip to one of the world's most famous capital cities....

Amsterdam- A Unique Place!

Advantages: Multi-cultural, fairly compact and easy to get around
Disadvantages: Sometimes the whiff of cannabis can give you a headache

...the way we did it.) We got on the train at the tail end of rush hour. However, the train was very clean and got us to Amsterdam in 15 minutes. Once in Amsterdam we headed straight to the V V V. This is the Amsterdam Tourist Board. Here you will find free maps and leaflets on just about everything- including walks, canal tours, sights, exhibitions, transport and accomodation. The staff is multi-lingual (as is most of Amersterdam) and will give you advice, change money, arrange excursions, book tickets and hotels. We bought the "I AMsterdam" 72 hour card. There are three types of "I AMsterdam" cards - 24 hour- 33 Euros, 48 hours- 43 Euros and 72 hours- 53 Euros). With it you get Public Transport tickets (Trams, buses and Underground) for free. It entitles you to free admission to almost all the city's famous museums...

Ponterfact Museum, West Yorkshire

Advantages: Free entry, plenty to see and do
Disadvantages: Not everyones idea of a fun day out

...Pontefract's museum is located within an impressive art nouveau building that dates from 1904. This building was originally the Carnegie Free Library and even today it still has the feel of a library about it, although in other places it also reminded me of an old school building. It is located right in the heart of the town centre, adjacent to the parish church and close to the market and is therefore very easy to find. I usually try and make a point of visiting museums when I am in area as they are an excellent way of finding out about an area and they are usually free to visit. Pontefract's museum is no exception to this rule as it is both free and a great place to discover all about the towns rich history. The building that houses the museum is set out on two different floors but most of the exhibits are on the lower floor. As...

A Short Break in Amsterdam

Advantages: Easy and quick to get there, an interesting and cosmopolitan city.
Disadvantages: It clearly isn't for all given the abudance of blantant sex and drugs.

...is a busy area and I never felt unsafe there at any point. The Van Gough Gallery. Situated on the edge of the city centre in huge park called the Vondelpark this is an absolute must if you have any artistic inclination at all!! There are a great deal of masterpieces housed here. At EURO15 it is pricey to get in and we had to queue for a good 45 minutes but it was definitely worth it. The gallery also has a large area housing temporary exhibitions, while we were there this featured the works of Monet and Manet, which was also exceptional. Rembrandt's house. Situated adjacent to a particularly pretty cane,l on Jodenbreestraat and near to one of the larger markets of Amsterdam, Rembrandts House, which became a museum in 1911, was also interesting and worth the trip. Rembrandt collected many old classics by other artists...
