Alaska's Biggest City

Advantages: Awe inspiring, lots of history, friendly people
Disadvantages: Can get cold, sometimes noisy

...We visited Alaska during February, Anchorage was the best option for the start of the adventure. At this time of year you will find that there are not a great deal of tourists to be seen. When you first exit the airport terminal you can be forgiven for thinking you have entered a war zone. At least 50% of the cabs have some form of damage, ranging from dents to cracked windscreens. This however is down to the sometimes treacherous road conditions and the fact that when they have a good fall of snow they put gravel down on it rather than salt as is done here in the UK. This can be compared with the tar & chippings method used in the UK but the snow takes the place of the tar. Having spent the first day here I realised it is a very good way to get acclimatised to the country, normally the temperature is just hovering around -3C...

Not All That Bad

...The trip in question was Gatwick-Minneapolis-Anchorage & return and I was with a party of 5. After reading many bad reviews here & elsewhere about NWA I was ready for anything when I got to Gatwick. On arrival at the gate I have to admit the DC10 does look very dated now, although our plane looked in a lot better shape than the one bound for Detroit whick looked like it had recently seen a very severe hailstorm. Once through the security checks & boarded we found we had a half full flight for the first leg so we had the opportunity to stretch out a bit which is always nice regardless of airline. The transatlantic crossing was pretty much uneventful, we had the groans & creaks of the aircraft during takeoff but once up to cruising altitude the only annoying thing was the noise of the fuelling of the 2nd engine on the tail which...

The Octavia has turned out to be an excellent, value-for-money alternative. A big selling point was the boot; my 'cello wouldn't fit in the boot of previous cars but no problem with the Octavia. Its also well-lit with nets an anchorage provided for awkward packages and CD changer's in there too, out of temptation's way. The security system is naggingly reassuring. You can't drive without your seatbelt on unless you can put up with the pinging reminder. One press on the remote unlocks only the driver's door while two presses (is tricky to perform but) opens everything.
