WONDERFUL WONDERFUL HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN

Advantages: Gloriously colourful, wonderful songs
Disadvantages: Perhaps not for the older children

...Looking through the umpteen titles of family films, I was amazed that nobody has mentioned Hans Christian Andersen. Certainly it is the one that stands out in my childhood memories and I wonder how many modern mums still sing the song of the Ugly Duckling to their children or read them the tale of The Red Shoes. Made in l952 the film has retained a childlike innocence with Danny Kaye playing the part of Andersen to perfection, indeed I was surprised when I saw a painting of Hans Christian Andersen to see just how alike the two are. The film is not meant to be a biography, but is merely a fairy tale about a storyteller. Colourful costumes and fantasy backlots set the first scene with Hans the cobbler, singing merrily to the children of Odense who are so enthralled by his tales that they skip school. Well, at least it's not swine flu!

Advantages: fun book for young children
Disadvantages: none

...attractive but they all do have some appeal to them. The princess has straggly hair and gappy teeth but we all love her! There is one absolutely delightful picture of her with a greenish bogey coming out of her nose! Now you might think that is gross but my daughters love it! That's just a taste of what you might expect from these wonderful illustrations. This is a brilliantly funny book that I feel sure that most children will love and will want to return to again and again. My daughters certainly do! It is published by Andersen Press and has a RRP of £4.99 although you can probably shop around for a better price....

The Little Mermaid

Advantages: A must see if you're there

...I would love to visit all the capital cities of Europe, so naturally, last October, when I was given the opportunity to go to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, I grabbed it with open hands! I have always loved Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales, so with Copenhagen once being his home, I was absolutely delighted to be going. The Little Mermaid was one of the first attractions we visited because we really wanted to see it and we were only there for four days. We didn't realise when we first set off but The Little Mermaid was quite a long distance from our hotel. It must have taken a good 45 minutes to walk there. (Granted, we probably weren't walking very fast, but all the same!). We walked along the edge of the river most of the way there expecting to see it every 5 minutes we walked! The Keats Shelley Memorial

Advantages: Wonderful tribute to two great poets
