...Wood Anemone's or to give them their proper name, Anemone quinquefolia are a little flower that I remember from childhood. Early each spring we eagerly awaited the flowers that showed us that warmer weather was on the way. First was the celandine, bright yellow stars glowing in the sun looking like drops of paint along the base of a hedgerow. Primroses followed shortly after and then the bluebells and anemones painted the grass between the trees with blue and white. The anemones always fascinated me, I loved the bright green of the slightly hairy furled leaves and then the deeper green as the leaves opened to reveal the flower bud. So, what are they? ...Well one of the flowers anyway Anemone. The name means wind flower in Greek . There is a myth that Anemone was a nymph of the woods that a god turned into a flower. Spring is in the air well nearly it was sunny and I did a little gardening today. Soon the anemones I have in the garden will be flowering or some of them anyway. I have some wild wood anemones. Anemone's start flowering from March until May Wood anemone (anemone nemorosa) is a small daisy like flower growing about 4 inches high 25cm. They spread all over the garden. Peace in Greece

Advantages: Close to resort centre.
Disadvantages: Unsuitable for disabled.

...Anemones Apartments are on the island of Kos. They are below the village of Kefalos in a purpose built tourist resort about a 5 - 10 minute walk from the beach. Don't let the tourist resort put you off, it is all tastfully done. With a selection of very good tavernas, that serve superb food in big portions, that is unusual in greece. We travelled with Manos for the first time, and was very pleased with the way everything was done by them. also at a very reasonably priced holiday £504 for two weeks per couple. The Anemones Apartments are down a gravel track about 50 meters, the coach cannot get down this track so you have to lug your luggage from the end. But its not to bad once going and once coming back. This is one of the reasons why i wouldn't recommend the Anemones Apartments for disabled persons. We were greeted by a lady...

The most AMAZING place to visit!!!! A must see!!!

Advantages: Loads to see and do, your money goes to a fanatasic cause
Disadvantages: None!

..., anemones, sea snails etc and you even get the chance to hold a crab or a starfish! Then you've got the brilliant woodland walk with the nature trail to follow, and two of the cutest otters I've ever seen! You've also got ponies, goats and sheep! And theres a great safari bus that kids just love. I'd recommend seeing the talks at feeding times, their so informative. We visit at least 4 times a year with the kids and wouldn't change it for the world!...

...It has been quite a while since I read a book like this with my children as they are reading much more in depth literature now, but after a request from their school, I find myself going back in time, and rediscovering basic childrens books, and I have to say that it has been a delightful experience. Sharing a Shell is a wonderful childrens book written by Julia Donaldson, and illustrated by Lydia Monks. It tells the story of a homeless crab who is looking for a shell. After several unsuccessful attempts at trying to share a shell with various sea creatures, Crab is severely exposed and nearly eaten by a seagull! Fortunately he scuttles away and is stumbles upon an empty shell. Phew! Crab settles in a rock pool, and this is where he meets an anemone, but I assume to make things easier for children he is referred to simply as...

...is joined by an anemone who wants to share and although crab is at first reluctant to share his home, he lets first anemone then a bristleworm into his home. They move happily about the rick pool, helping each other until they get too big for the shell, and start to argue. Time for a change so they split up and find different homes and each pretending to be happy with the new arrangement. Children love this picture with them sitting so glumly in their new homes- a paper cup and an empty ice cream tub. But oh dear, there is a storm which smashes their homes, but washes up a beautiful pink, and very glittery shell. Heard the one about Crab, Anenome and Bristleworm?

...I always loved books as a child, and could never get enough of them. I regularly read books with my daughter, but as she is only 15 months she doesn't always sit still long enough to get to the end! However, I found Julia Donaldson's "Sharing A Shell" managed to maintain her interest all the way through. This is a picture book, intended for pre-school readers but because of the beautiful illustration I imagine this will appeal to most children - although the verse could prove a little to simple. ~The Story~ The characters in this book all live in a rock pool and this story starts with a little hermit crab (Crab) who finds an empty shell and decides to make it his very own home, keeping him safe from the hungry seagull! Excellent diving in the Maldives

Advantages: Warm water, clear, lots of life
Disadvantages: Some dives not that exciting

...'m not reviewing the boat or company but there were some concerns about how the boat was being run; it was a great boat in terms of size and layout but the organisation surounding some of the dives could have been much better. We only did one night dive which was a bit of a disappointment for me; I think this is partly related to the strong currents around the Maldives and the unsuitability of certain sites for night dives, but it would have been nice to have more options for this. As for what we saw - plenty of mantas on those 2 dives; several white-tip reef sharks, a group of 7-8 eagle rays, the odd grey reef shark in the distance. It was better for macro - lots of anemonefish on very colourful anemones; moray eels all over the place, swarms of small blue triggerfish! There were quite a few turtles over the course of the week...

Review of Maldives (Dive Sites)

Birmingham National Sealife Centre

Advantages: Interesting, factual and a great one for the kids!
Disadvantages: None in particular

...Having been to the Sealife Centre a couple of times when I was younger and living at home, I found this to be an extremely interesting attraction. Now I have my own 7 month old daughter, I decided to take her to the centre at Birmingham when we were visiting family for a week. The price was very reasonable, £14.95 per adult and free for our little one as she is under 3. We wondered round for a good 2.5 hours, looking at a number of different fish, all in tanks with bright colours. It is very well designed to keep the attention of young children, even as young as 7 months. There is a feely pool for children who are able to get close to the creatures, including sea anemones and crabs. There is also a seahorse breeding facility at this particular centre, which provides and interesting look at these sea creatures. You can also see giant...
