The Anglers Rest, Derbyshire
Advantages: Good Sunday Lunch, Nice Pub And Lovely Setting
Disadvantages: Food Is Quite Expensive
...The Angler?s Rest is one of three Public Houses/Restaurants in the little picturesque Village of Bamford, in an area of Derbyshire?s Peak District National Park known as the High Peak.
I visited the Angler?s Rest in Bamford recently for Sunday Lunch, although I must confess that this was not actually my first choice of venue. I had intended to visit a place called the Yorkshire Bridge, which is a popular place and has a good reputation for food. In fact, the Yorkshire Bridge was so popular that we could not find an empty table, hence we headed back up the road about a mile to the Angler?s Rest.
I have eaten at the Angler?s Rest before but this was many years ago. Back then this place served excellent food but I had heard that its standards had fallen since that time. I had however heard that this place had recently changed owners...

The Times For Anglers
Advantages: News content on a very specialised subject
Disadvantages: A paper is more difficult to read than a magazine
...This paper is unlike any other. Not only is the content quite different from that of a normal newspaper, it tells only truth too!!!
I don't know many anglers who have not at sometime or another, looked in between these pages, and found something useful.
It basically has everything that the modern day angler would want. There are sections on all different aspects of the sport. Carp, match, sea, as well as just the sport in general.
It is also totally crammed with news, reviews, results and competitions. It has so much more than a normal fishing mag would offer. Its features, explaining different methods that are worth trying , to the angler, are a less prominent part of the paper (when compared to the magazines), but it makes up for this with additional content which cannot be found anywhere else (other maybe than 'Anglers...

Trust the Anglers Mail
Advantages: Only £1
Disadvantages: None
...This is another excellent fishing magazine for the keen angler. I buy it regularly. It is a weekly publication covering the whole spectrum of fishing from coarse fishing to sea fishing and everything in between.
Not stuffed too full of adverts and only £1 to buy it is extremely good value for money.
I particularly enjoy reading the News pages to find out just what is happening in the fishing world, what is being caught, where and how. The tackle section is particularly useful and there are some good reports and writeups on the latest tackle and baits available. Tips on where to fish throughout the country also appear regularly making your choice of venue easier to decide.
At the back of the magazine you will find the Swap Shop where anglers can advertise for sale any tackle they want to sell or advertise for tackle they want to...

FISHY TALES
Advantages: Comprehensive coarse fishing coverage; cheap and affordable; helpful for real amateurs
Disadvantages: Can sometimes be a little sexist
...Until around two years ago, I never in a million years saw myself sitting avidly watching a fishing rod for the slightest sign of a bite! You see, I?m a girlie girl (or woman!) ? I never go out without make up; I like to paint my finger nails and I really don?t like getting my hands dirty. Beasts and bugs and flying insects scare the living daylights out of me. Anyway, a couple of years ago, I was conned into going on a fishing holiday with my husband and to be honest, it was a revelation. I loved every single minute of it, including getting soaked to the skin and getting those lovely soft hands dirty! My husband has been a keen fisherman since he was a child and has subscribed to the Angler?s Mail for as long as I can remember.
But these days, guess who gets her hands on it first ?. Yes, me! Carp are my fish of choice...

Here fishy fishy fishy
Advantages: Very cheap
Disadvantages: none
...As a keen allround angler of many years, I've managed to squeeze in at least a little peak of most of todays fishing magazines and papers.
The Anglers Mail is definitely a good read (when I can get hold of it - distribution in Cornwall seems pretty limited when compared with others like it).
The best thing about it is the news content. I think that it even probably beats the 'Angling Times' on this. Its well laid out and there's quite a lot sometimes, squeezed in to relatively few pages. This is a good thing really. I personally think that although its not planned like this, I often miss things first time round. My point being that when reading through again and again I'm always finding new things to keep me interested, until the next weeks edition comes out.
The picture and paper quality is definitely better than that...

Fishing news and views
Advantages: Not expensive, well produced
Disadvantages: Could do with being thicker
...The Anglers Times is without doubt one of the best fishing publications around. The Times has been with us for a number of years providing fishermen and women all over the UK with up to date information and views on a whole range of fishing issues.
Sections on venues and how they are fishing along with details about how the fish were caught is a favourite of mine and which I find very useful. Tackle tips and bait help are also favourite features.
It is also pleasing to see what is coming out of the lakes, Anglers Times brings you the best pictures of the best catches. I've never yet had one of mine included but there is still hope.
It is not an expensive publication and I always keep a copy in my tackle bag to read during those sometimes long moments while you are waiting for that all important bite.
There are always great...

For the serious Carp Angler
Advantages: Just £ 1.50, weekly publication, well written
Disadvantages: None
...As the name would rather obviously suggest this is a magazine dedicated to the carp angler. A weekly publication, it brings you all the lastest news and views on anything to do with tracking down and catching this beautiful fish.
Like most dedicated magazines specialising in a particular subject it goes quite in depth in some areas but it is a reccommended read to the serious angler.
Features such as the News Round-up are particularly useful to keep up to date with the latest methods, trends and happenings in the world of carp fishing.
I find the Catchlines section an interesting read as you get to see some of the large fish caught by anglers country wide together with a write up about where and how they caught their quarry. A section on the latest baits and a column by their regular columnist Simon Crow further enhance this...

Carp anglers dream
Advantages: Well stocked lake, cafe, clean, good parking
Disadvantages: None
...One of the best places around for Carp Fishing is at Cuttle Mill, near Sutton Colefield, Birmingham. There are two lakes here, one being the main carp pool with 16 numbered and 6 un-numbered swims and the other a match & carp lake. Both afford the angler a great fishing experience.
The main carp pool is very well stocked with some big doubles up to 40 pounds. You need to book up early as it is on a first come first served basis. The cost is currently £14.50 per day for the main carp lake, but it is certainly worth it.
Which peg you fish from is down to luck as all 16 numbered swims are placed in a bag and you draw 'blind', however most swims produce good fish. Naturally, fishing there changes according to the weather and other factors. Just being there is a pleasure as the scenery is beautiful, so you can really relax and enjoy...

For beginners or intermediate anglers.
Advantages: Learn how to use a dynamite stick
Disadvantages: The dvd is not sequential.
...Rob Hughes, an angler with many years experience of specimen hunting, has produced a thoroughly watchable dvd that is both informative and enjoyable. His pedigree as a specimen hunter is backed up by the number of 40's and shedloads of 30's he has caught to date, both in the UK and abroad.
After a brief introduction, about the pedigree of Rob Hughes, by Liam Dale, Rob starts by informing you that he is fishing on an ordinary club lake with no pre-baited swims, and by giving you a great Top Tip;
"Location, Location, Location and once again Location". What is the point of fishing in a swim that has no fish? He then goes on to tell you to walk arround the pool/lake looking for signs of fish and to talk to other anglers. If one angler has caught 10 reasonably sized carp park yourself next to them because you know that fish are nearby...

Anglers Net
Advantages: Great Fishing reports from your local area.
Disadvantages: Needs more people in my area to post things on there
...www.anglersnet.co.uk is one of the first sites i visited when i typed angling in a search engine. I have returned on many occasions. It is well put together and very informative. There is a chat room & message board where if no-one is on line then leave a message for other anglers to respond to. Theres even a section where you can leave your e-mail to try and find fishing friends in your area.
They have a very informative section on fish. All the species are covered and a detailed bait section will tell you what to use. They takle reviews, so if your thinking of buying that piece of expensive tackle, ask them to review it and they might. You can find fishing clubs in your area as there is a very in depth database of clubs. They even have links on there to the clubs that have websites.
The section i like best is the Fishery...
