...I'm in two minds about whether to write this review. I loved Anguilla so much - and loved the fact that it's so little known amongst western tourists- that I'm tempted to keep it to myself. But, I also want to share the experience - totally vital and exhilarating, with great nightlife (try Johnno's or Banky Banx's bar near Cuisinart as well as the bars down on Shoal Bay), yet at the same time completely laid-back, perfect for chilling, recharging and preparing yourself for the next evening's sundowners at Uncle Ernie's BBQ bar at Shoal Bay ($2 for red stripe/pina colada). Eating out can be expensive - unless you're happy to stick to a diet of barbecued ribs and chicken wings. One top tip to avoid having to pay extortionate beachbar prices for lunch (unless you eat at Ernie's -the central hub of the island with its continuous reggae...

Review of General: Anguilla

AN INTRODUCTION TO NEOREALISM?!

Advantages: Well written, good story, thought provoking
Disadvantages: genre can be offputting to some

...Pavese wrote 'The Moon and The Bonfires' in 1949 and it was published in 1950 a few months before he took his own life. The story revolves around a man Anguilla who returns to his boyhood home of San Stefano Belbo in the Italian Northern region of Piedmont after having made his fortune in America. Through the memories of Anguilla and his childhood friend Nuto the novel explores episodes in the lives of three women from Anguilla's past. The story takes us to the time of pre war when a strict social hierarchy existed, the onset of fascism changed that and to an extent the old order collapses to be replaced by a new order of intimidation and fear. The story then moves on to the war and in flashbacks we learn about the desperate gangs of partisans living in the hills and mountains constantly hunted by Mussolini's fascist soldiers. The AA and the Caribbean? Surely not...

Advantages: Bright, colourful, great pics, good text
Disadvantages: £12.99 less to spend on Rum!!

...I must admit, I wouldn't instinctively turn to the AA (Automobile Association) when it comes to guide books, especially not one for the Caribbean! However, the AA do produce a good range (300 or more) of guidebooks, and the Explorer series is really rather good. Softback, handy travel bag size (not pocket), around 300 pages of a mixture of text, full colour photographs and useful maps. This book covers all the major islands including: Anguilla, Antiga, Aruba, Barbados, Barbuda, Bonaire, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Curacao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Grenadines, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Martinque, Montserrat, Nevis, Puerto Rico, Saba, St. Croix, St. John, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Martin, St. Thomas, St. Vincent, Tortola and Trinidad & Tobago. Whilst perhaps each island could command a book in itself, this is a great introduction...

Graham Swift's Waterland, a beautifully written novel

Advantages: A book deeply concerned with how a convoluted childhood and past can affect the present
Disadvantages: Long descriptions of landscape and history can become tedious at times

Throughout the entire novel, various forms of historiography are used, regional history (the fenlands), natural history (anguilla anguilla), geographical history (eastern England), political history (Earnest Atkinson) and of course autobiography. Thomas feels that it is impossible to give a perfect account of history, it is an ?impossible thing: the attempt to give an account, with incomplete knowledge, of actions themselves undertaken with incomplete knowledge.? He is obsessed by the question why. Throughout ?Waterland? Thomas constantly asks himself that same question, leading him on to an endless number of new questions which when answered only bring more.
