...Norway is reputed as being one of the most expensive places to go in the world. Arriving at the Hotel Our flight got us in to Oslo at about 11am but we weren't supposed to check in to our hotel until 3pm. Although this might not sound like a long time, it is when it's minus 6 outside and you're dragging a big suitcase. Having previously looked up the route to the hotel on Google maps, we decided to set about finding it. It wasn't particularly easy to find the hotel as, although it was near the centre of town, it was hidden away down a back street and isn't near many other attractions. Its also right next to the Anker HOSTEL - so don't get confused and try and check into that by mistake! It may be cheap, but it's not nasty!

Advantages: Cheap, lovely helpful staff, good free breakfast, easy tram access
Disadvantages: None that I could see, unless you're a pampered princess

...My husband and I spent two nights in the Best Western Anker hotel in Oslo at the end of December 2006. We booked the hotel purely because it was the cheapest we could find at short notice (the hostels were all fully booked up). Oslo is a very expensive city, but we paid £115 altogether for two nights including breakfast, which was very reasonable indeed. The hotel is located a ten minute walk from the main bus/train station in Oslo, which makes it very convenient to get to. We got directions at the bus station and found it quite straightforward to find the hotel. The area is very multi-cultural, and we were probably the only white people on the street as we walked, so there was a great variety of little shops and cafes along the way. ...think of these? There are two Anker bakeries within 500m of my flat ? one is only 150m away, but alas is not open on Sundays - that's pretty standard for Vienna. There are two other independent bakers and assorted confectioners within 300m. I tend to go to Anker for convenience, although I am finding that some of the special products the indies do are worth taking a squizz at. The cake shops are good but nothing outstanding. Q7: Do you eat ready meals? If you do, is it for convenience, taste or other reasons? If you don't, why don't you? No, I order by phone at a restaurant. I use cooking in the evening or breakfast as a way of de stressing, and don?t go for them a lot. I prefer to go out and eat out but have something decent than to buy ready meals. Review of All About Me

My day in the past.

Advantages: Good atmosphere, amazing buildings, good shopping
Disadvantages: Very sad, extremly cold in winter!

...is also a good bookshop where you can stock up on books about the war that you couldn't get elsewhere. I really enjoyed the museum and the actual Cloth Hall building was fascinating too. After a brief lunch break, we headed for the trenches at Sanctuary Wood. These looked quite authentic but they did look as if some work had been done to them. I was surprised about how shallow they were but I'm sure that the trenches that we saw weren't the only ones. It was interesting to walk around in the trenches but I really did need my boots and waterproof trousers! There are some live grenades and naval shells lying about which are very dangerous and should be never touched. After cleaning ourselves up a bit, we headed into the town centre for some dinner. Jomo - The Naughty Cockatoo

...absolutely horrified to hear him say "Joey w*nker" - the worst part of it was, he'd said it SO clearly. There was absolutely no mistaking it. I did the worst thing possible.... I laughed. Cockatoos have a great sense of fun and if you laugh at something they do, they repeat it again and again and again! From now on, it seemed that whenever he heard the word "Joey" he?d shout "Joey w*nker". It was time to change his name, but I felt mean taking his name away from him. A friend suggested just changing it slightly. It seemed to work. Gradually (thankfully) he's stopped saying "Joey w*anker". I'm glad to say that he's continuing trying to say " Joey dance" and I'm still encouraging him on that!
