Dine Like a Mogul in Walton-on-Thames

Advantages: Excellent food and service. Convivial atmosphere. Value for money.
Disadvantages: A little off the beaten track, but otherwise none to speak of.

...INTRODUCTION In times past, one of the first things I tried to establish as soon as I moved into a new area was the quality of the various Indian and Chinese establishments in the neighbourhood. Fortunately, although my devotion to the Slimming World plan has significantly reduced the frequency of nights out to local eateries, I discovered excellent Mogul well before my self-imposed exile from oriental cuisine. As it happens, with a bit of common sense, a sympathetic chef and judicious menu choices, a night out at the curry house need not be a calorific disaster. GETTING THERE The Mogul anchors a parade of shops on Terrace Road, just past Cottimore Lane, on the Molesey side of Walton-on-Thames. It?s around a ten minute walk from the bottom of the High Street. Unfortunately, the only realistic option is to drive there...

Anna Karenina

Advantages: Beautifully written, complex characters, thought provoking
Disadvantages: Time consuming

...Anna Karenina is one of Leo Tolstoy?s best known and best loved works. The novel enjoys continued influence in today?s society and although it was written almost two centuries ago, the continued relevance of its central themes makes the book as provocative now as the day it was written. The main theme of the novel seems to be that of happiness. Yet it does not simply deal with the shallow emotion but with human fulfilment of life. This idea is best shown through the sharply contrasting characters of Anna and Levin. The character of Anna has beauty, charm and wealth, yet finds her life to be completely unsatisfying. Her choice to begin an affair with the officer Vronsky is a decision to struggle against this feeling of emptiness. The consequences are heartbreaking with the happiness she so desperately seeks continually eluding her...

Review of Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy

Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy

Advantages: A masterpiece
Disadvantages: A very long masterpiece

...Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina is an incredibly popular story. Well known and loved by many it has survived the passage of time and is as beguiling and popular now as it has ever been. I say story rather than novel as this has been the subject of many film and TV adaptations, from Greta Garbo in 1935 to Sophie Marceau in 1997 the IMDb website lists no less than 24 different adaptations, from all over the world. How popular the novel itself is is questionable, weighing in at over 800 pages it is quite daunting but if you've only seen the films you really have missed out. The novel is a masterpiece of literature and covers characters and themes far beyond the reach of film. I'll be honest and say that I've never seen any of these adaptations but from the synopsis' and commentaries I've read it seems that they focus almost entirely...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

The Waltons Series Two

Advantages: fantastic relaxing feel good television
Disadvantages: can't think of any??!!

...Well as an avid waltons fan, again I cannot fault this series in fact until I saw this I thought I would never have a negative word to say however.... the second series is by far better than the first. The actors have clearly found their niche with their various characters and some in particular i.e. John-Boy and the Grandfather have become much stronger. I think the script is much stronger too. As with most drama series until it develops you don't notice but there is definately a difference in the sense that its much more seamless for example in a scene with quite a bit of dialogue between the characters the flow is much better, before it was quite obvious and probably a bit wooden by comparison if I am completely frank. Thats not to say that my review on the first series wasn't true just that having seen the second I can see...

Anna Sui dolly girl (just as sweet as the bottle!)

Advantages: Long lasting beautiful scent, not too strong, doesn't leave residue
Disadvantages: not for all tastes, a little expensive

...The Anna Sui perfume line is always my number one choice when i'm searching for a new scent to add to my collection. Every new perfume they bring out is never a let down. This one was my first purchase and it was the unusal, doll faced styled bottle that lead me to buy it. A spritz of this femnine, frutty, candy like scent on my neck, left me noticed for hours, i was constantly being asked who i was wearing. This perfume may not be everyones personal taste as everyone has different likings, but if you are looking for a fun kind of scent this is the one. Plus the cool bottle will really spruce up your perfume shelve. Perfect to wear for a special occasion, it's light enough to not cause a headache, but strong enough to leave an impression. maybe this is not what you want...? so take a look at the box sets and consider as a special...

Anna Sui for me and me and me!!!!

Advantages: Lovely smelling smell
Disadvantages: Scarey looking bottle

...I'd been brought one of Anna Sui's perfumes before, Sweet dreams its called I'd got it one Christmas from my other half (i would say better half but I think that's my role?.lol) and I totally loved it then and still love it now! It smelt like it had been made just for me! I still continue to by Sweet Dreams but love to try new perfumes so I asked if this one by Anna Sui, Dolly Girl, could be put in this years Christmas stocking! I'd seen advertisements for it in some magazines and some other friends of mine had smelt it and thought the fragrance would suit me. It was my brother who finally brought it for me and it's a 50ml (1.7 fl. Oz) size bottle which he told me cost around £28 (the smaller size bottle, tight git!). I have seen it for cheaper on special offer in Superdrug since but I'm sure you could find it cheaper still...

From Russia with Love, comes Anna Karenina

Advantages: Sets the heart racing, with love then anger
Disadvantages: possibly not Leighs best performance

...Anna Karenina, This black and white 1947/48 adaptation starring the Beautiful Vivien Leigh, is probably not one of the best performances of her career, but well worth watching. Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Anna of the Five Towns

Advantages: great read with a cup of tea and a jaffa (optional)
Disadvantages: hmm.....none

...I remember reading this book when I was 15 years old and could narrate to this. Nine years on now I have brought my own copy as this book brings allot of memories to my mind. ANNA OF THE FIVE TOWNS - THE TITLE Anna of the five towns is the first of Arnold Bennett's 'Five Towns' novels which was published in 1902. This is the first series of stories set in the potteries which is Arnold Bennett's birthplace. It now consists of the City of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire. The 'Five Towns' novels are; Anna of the Five Towns (1902), The Old Wives' Tale (1908) The Clayhanger Family (1925). You do not have to read them in order as each book is a story itself. THE AUTHOR Arnold Bennett also known as Enoch Arnold Bennett was born in 1867 and died in 1931. He started writing in late nineteenth century while...
