Total Lac of fun Mur-de-Bretagne
Advantages: Clean, wholesome and accommodating
Disadvantages: Wasps. And bees.
...Advantages: Clean, wholesome and accommodating
Disadvantages: Wasps. And bees.
Guerledan Lake at Mur-de-Bretagne - Brittany.
Or Lac de Gueledan (Same place but in French)
That French sure is tricky.
We just returned from France after a not-so-gruelling two week stint in the heart of Brittany. Many things were done and many things seen but one of the best was this large man-made lake - the biggest, allegedly, in Europe.
Humorously, it's owned by EDF, the electricity supplier. They also supply my electricity, so this computer is being powered partly by the lake I am writing about. Perhaps 'humorously' was either wishful thinking or exaggeration. Or just a lie.
The lake is a big long affair and has the look of a a drowned valley, which it is. You always get suspicious when you see leafless trees sticking out of the lake...

A year in Petit Bretagne
Advantages: Relaxing
Disadvantages: Rains a lot
...the extreme North West of France, Brittany is often thought of as a little nation state, all on its own, with its own unique culture and environment. Even the name Bretagne describes its connections with Blighty (Grande Bretagne). It was known in the time of the Celts as Armorica (?the land of the sea?) for good reason because the place abounds with myths and legends of towns and villages which have disappeared into the ferocious English Channel and it shares with Britain the love of Arthurian legend.
The beaches of Brittany are beautifully clean and fresh, as is the water, although the majority are of rock and stone rather than sand and you will need to take sandals if you are visiting to protect your feet from cuts, as the dave27-ettes now know to their cost.
The place is a favourite with English tourists and visit any seaside town in...

IN THE HEART OF BRITTANY
Advantages: A super place to stay.
Disadvantages: Not well known enough.
...Situated centrally between Loudeac, Rostrenen and Pontivy, Mur de Bretagne, (or "Wall of Brittany), is one of those places that doesn't get the publicity it merits. Why ? There are so many resort towns on the map in this part of the world that people somehow get side-tracked, end up in expensive accommodation that promises the world, but that are not nearly as well situated as this little village is, nor offer the same accessibility to places that suit all the family.
Mur is a proud little town with a Marie that sits up on a hill, amidst a splendid garden, the buildings being typical French architecture from the 18th Century, and you may even miss the centre of this little haven should you not take turns from the main road to discover what the place has to offer. In the main square, for example, there are restaurants that cater...

St Annes NOT Lytham
Advantages: lovely
Disadvantages: rubbish when it rains
...Before I start there is one thing I need to get straight Lytham and St Annes are two different places with 2 different town centres and I am reviewing St Annes and not Lytham. (ok it is now a single borough but the people that live in these places see them as separate towns) If you put either St Annes or Lytham into google etc you will get information on both Lytham and St Annes
The full name is St Annes-On-the-Sea which is shortened to St Annes .
A Bit of History
Colonal Clifton the squire of Lytham wanted to develop the area known as 'West End' (That part is now St Annes) All there was in 1870 was Dunes, a railway from Blackpool to Lytham and some farms and cottages that paid rent to the Clifton's. They had seen the good of Lytham as a resort so saw the dunes as somewhere they...

ANNE BRONTE
Advantages: INTERESTING TO LEARN ABOUT SOMEONE'S LIFE
Disadvantages: NONE
...ANNE BRONTE
I have been reading about the Bronte sisters and I have been reading about Anne and also some of her work so this is a very brief account of her life.
Anne was born January 17th in 1820 at Thornton. She was sixth child and the last one to be born of Patrick and his wife Maria Branwell Bronte. Her father was the Curate of Thornton and he had to look for a better position because of the size of his family and then he was appointed curacy of Haworth and they moved there in the April of 1820 just a few months after Anne was born.
Then very soon after they had moved Anne's mother became ill and died in the September of 1821 and was buried in Haworth Church.
The children were up to when Maria Bronte died was look after by a nursemaid and her name was Sarah and her sister Nancy Gars while Patrick Bronte spent the time...

Empire of Ann Summers
Advantages: a great selection
Disadvantages: price
...Well, Ann summers shops, great aren't they?
I've been to Ann summers shops before and have always found them to be very spacious, have plenty of stock and staff very helpful.
Myself I know alot about Ann Summers, I used to be a party organiser. I done this for a year and only gave up because of my full time work commitments grew and couldn't spare my time anymore. Even though I am still in touch and order mostly through friends who are still party organisers I still like to have a look around the shop. The shop where i normally visit is glass fronted with dummys in the window normally 'dressed up' in the lastest new or popular Ann Summers range. Inside, there is plenty of room to move and garments are not too packed onto rails so they all get tangled up. They are nicely spread out and easy to find your size. Ann summers sell...

Ann Summers EXPOSED
Advantages: A great laugh
Disadvantages: Not for the easily embarrassed or offended
...Last week I attended my first ever Ann Summers party. I don’t know how I’ve managed to reach the age of 38 without going to one before, and I certainly won’t wait another 38 years before going to one again. It was hilarious, sexy, exciting, life-enhancing and absolutely filthy!
Background
++++++++++
The Ann Summers phenomenon is headed by Jacqueline Gold. From working in her father’s business as a wages clerk, she moved up the ranks of the company and then became Chief Executive, transforming the company into a huge concern selling lingerie and sex toys to women the world over, usually through private parties in women’s own homes.
The company now has an annual sales turnover of £53.5 million (gross), and is, according to Ms Gold’s own (incredibly egotistical and nauseating) website...

WRITTEN IN THE BODY (The Gathering - Anne Enright)
Advantages: beautifully written, has staying power
Disadvantages: grim, not much happens, unlikeable narrator
...Summary: beautifully written internal-monologue tale of bodily anguish
It's not difficult to see why Anne Enright's "The Gathering" has been short-listed (and eventually, selected) for that ultimate literary fiction accolade, the Man Booker prize. If our (or the jurors') idea of the the peaks of literary novel is, almost unavoidably, defined by the Great Moderns, if it's all of Joyce, Woolf and Lawrence; Proust and Kafka; then "The Gathering" had to be recognised because it's steeped in that tradition.
Veronica Hegarty, one of the twelve Hegarty siblings is bringing her brother Liam home to bury. He walked to his death in the Brighton sea, his brain muddled by drink, his pockets filled with stones. The gathering of the title refers to the family coming to the funeral in Dublin, but most of the book consists of Veronica...
