The Secret Annexe

Advantages: Highly informative and emotional book exploring the plight of the Jewish people during the Holocaust.
Disadvantages: -

The family leave behind misleading information to distract anyone who may look for them and aided by people who work for her father, they remain in hiding for twenty-five months until, sadly, the diary ends. Throughout reading the book, although I knew the outcome, I found myself wishing and hoping they lived to see the end of the war. The only surviving member of the Secret Annexe was Anne's father, Otto Frank. The diary was rescued and returned to him by a woman who helped them whilst they were hidden away and, as Anne wished in her diary, the book was published for the whole world to see. The book offers awesome insight into the difficulties of war such as the food available, the brute force of the Nazi Party, the sheer violence within once peaceful cities but also shares with us the difficulties of being a teenage girl. Review of The Annexe (London)

Heart Wrenching, Gore Intensive, Blood Thirsty Perfection!

Advantages: Superb graphically, Gameplay
Disadvantages: Occasionally suffers from lag online

Multiplayer wise there are similar features to the original Gears of War, Co-op and Online Multiplayer consisting of levels such as Wingman (where you and a friend battle it out against four other teams of 2 untill one team stands) and Annex (where the objective is to capture and keep a designated area while holding off the opposition. On top of this there is a new installment to the game, this being named Horde. Here you, and your friends if you wish, must defeat a 50 wave constant onslaught of Grubs (the baddies to anyone unfamiliar). The game really does have everything that a classic needs, and a true classic the game is. All in all you would be mad to miss out on such a game, aslong as your over 15 obviously! The only negative as ive mentioned is the lag online, but with this taken in Gears...

Read the diary and then visit the hiding place

Advantages: very moving, well-presented
Disadvantages: can get very busy, not accessible for people with walking difficulties

...The Anne Frank House is well worth the visit if you are ever in Amsterdam. The house is Prinsengracht 263, and is easy to find as Amsterdam is very compact. Many of the boats touring Amsterdam's canals also stop off at the museum. Once inside the house you are shown a short video describing the anti-Jewish persecution of the Second World War, which led Anne, her family and four others to hide in the annexe of this remarkable building. Anne's father, Otto, ran a business in the front of the house, and the uppermost floors of the back annexe became their hiding place for over 2 years. Visitors follow a fixed route around the house, starting with the revolving bookcase that hid the entrance to the annexe. A Tale of What Could Have Happened

Advantages: A novel in which the burdens of memory are all too real
Disadvantages: Could upset some people

...on a life of its own and before his very eyes Peter sees his own past being adapted, distorted and endlessly argued over, until the differences between his present and former self spark a crisis he cannot suppress. In short this book is mere brilliance and is written with such compassion that is should not be overlooked. More over the first page quotes "We have records of what happened to all the inhabitants of the secret annex except Peter" and the novel is so perfectly constructed that it could almost be true. A superb novel in which the author delves deep into how it is the scars that cannot be seen that take the longest to heal and how some of them can never be healed....

Peterhead

Advantages: Steeped in seafaring history
Disadvantages: Cold!

...Peterhead is the biggest white-fish-landing port in Europe. It is also an oil industry base (perhaps as an annexe to Aberdeen, but no less important). It is known locally as "the Blue Toon", not as you may expect if you have visited, as a result of bodily parts rapidly turning blue in the cold north east wind which prevails here. Indigenous Peterheidians are known as "Blue Mogganers", deriving from the traditional sea-boot stockings of the whalers which originally gave Peterhead its place in maritime history (check out the town's museum). The "moggan" was a stocking, and the Peterhead whaleboatmen traditionally wore blue. As very distinct from the local rival port, Fraserburgh, whose inhabitants were known as "Puddlestinkers", but that's another story....

Review of Peterhead (Scotland)

Perfect for a short Venice break.

Advantages: great location, run by a friendly english speaking family
Disadvantages: none

...The primary reason we chose this hotel was for it's location. 2 minutes from St Mark's Square and a 5 minute walk from San Zaccharia Vaparetto station yet it is tucked away on Ruga Giuffa, a quiet and non-touristy street with plenty of Trattoria's and various shops (including a fantastic delicatessan). The first impressions of the hotel were very good, the family than ran it spoke very good english and were extremely helpful. On arrival we were told that we would be in an annex outside the hotel, meaning we were in a ground floor apartment on its own. The room was fairly large, and held all the usual amenities; TV, minibar, air conditioning etc. It was seperated into a lounge area, bedroom and bathroom. It backed onto a quiet courtyard allowing us to leave the windows fully open most of the time. The shower was large...

Did not dissapoint

Advantages: Reasonable price, Spacious room
Disadvantages: Bit out of town and on a busy junction

...Taking up an offer of 170 euro for two nights I jumped at this hotel when I had to stay in Eindhoven. A fair walk to the city centre and definately a taxi ride to the rail station this is an excellently equipped hotel. After an efficient check-in I entered my room and was amazed by the amount of space but on starting to unpack I realised there was nowhere to hand my clothes, but then I found the annex room with the wardrobe. It was too narrow to be a dressing room and to preserve modesty you had to be dressed to go there and get your clothes as it looked out to a busy junction. The room had internet facilities, cable tv and a mini bar. A nice hotel feature was that on leaving the hotel in the afternoon there was an exit/entrance you can use without traipsing through the reception. One of the most inspiring stories of all time

Advantages: Beautifully acted, captures every aspect of Anne's writing
Disadvantages: Distortion of time - large leaps between episodes

...After the first episode of this on BBC1, I began to look forward to it every night. I've read The Diary of a Young Girl several times over the years and each time I was surprised again by the intelligence, insight and sparkling humour of such a young woman in such difficult circumstances. I was really hoping that this new dramatisation would reflect that, and I wasn't disappointed. The story doesn't need much explanation. As Nazi persecution of the Jews grows ever harsher, the Frank family are forced into hiding above their company offices, helped by loyal friends and employees who keep their location a secret and bring supplies when they can. Final Fantasy XII; simply fantastic.

Advantages: Seemingly neverending gameplay. Stunning sound and graphics. Addictive gameplay.
Disadvantages: No multiplayer functions. That's about it.
