Avast Anti-Virus Home Edition (FREE)

Advantages: Has a screenaver that scans when activated.
Disadvantages: No built in Firewall.

And Avast could detect many trojans and spyware that Norton failed to detect due to its heruistic system. (And Norton also detected a few trojans which Avast failed to detect. But when I scanned these same files using eTrust Antivirus which is there in my company, it failed to detect these as viruses). Also whenever Norton detected any virus it would show the same message in a circle. That virus message 1, then 2, then 3, then 4, ....then 10, then some gap, then again to 1 and so on. Great anti-virus protection.

Advantages: Free and with almost daily updates.
Disadvantages: None for most users.

It requires filling in a quick bit of information to get the serial number e-mailed to you to be able to install this (a bit of a nuisance for a free product, but this program is worth the minor inconvenience). The commercial version is now on version 7 (instead of version 6 for the free one). **My Experience:** I've been using AVG for about 2 years now and recommended it to quite a few friends whenever they ask about anti-virus software (or if I find out they aren't running any even!). It's stopped a couple of viruses from getting onto my computer and hasn't let one slip through yet (keep your virus definitions updated regularly though to be safe!). I used to do a full scan of my computer quite often but AVG has proved to be so reliable...

norton anti virus 2007

Advantages: the live help can sometimes be usefull

...I believe that norton anti-virus really isnt the best you can get for your money. i bought this from my local computer superstore roughly 2 months ago, and i can honestly say il never buy norton again. it takes way too much computer memory and can slow down your system a hell of alot! not only this, but it doesnt always install correctly and it's also pretty useless. it hasnt picked up a single spyware or virus on my computer since i bought it, yet a free anti-spyware software i got included in my google package picks up 20-30 infections a week! i had to get some live assistance when i first installed norton because a component didnt install correctly. it was a 10 minute wait and the responses were slow and painstaking. it's got alot of variety when it comes to features, but only about 2 of these actually need to be used...

...First, let point out that I am no computer expert, nor do I know much about viruses....except that they are a major inconvenience if you have one on your pc. Now let me tell you a bit about AVG Anti Virus. This is a fantastic program, which as well as being free, is easy to install, use and update. Although the program looks fairly simple, it is a very powerful (free) tool at removing a whole host of viruses and diallers. So where do I find AVG Anti Virus? I got my copy of AVG Anti Virus at www.grisoft.com. Go to the 'download' tab at the top of the screen and when the next page loads, go to the 'AVG Free Edition' on the left hand menu. There are probably a whole host of other freeware/shareware sites where you can download it from but the site above seemed the easiest. What about installation? AVG Anti-virus Free...This Prog Rocks!

When my PC finally died (or so I thought) I had no alternative but to call in an engineer who managed to sort out the problem with my hard drive within 30 mins, got my operating system working and recovered the files I had thought were lost forever!!
