...At one time, Grisoft's AVG Antivirus used to have a very cheap and tacky look with nasty looking alien-like creatures displayed on the user interface. I'm also pretty sure that at the time it was one of the only antivirus software programs available for free, though has always been upgradable. I have had bad experiences in the past with older versions of AVG but I'm glad to say that Grisoft have sorted their act out and have improved the program a lot aswell as giving it a more professional looking makeover. Though according to the most recent reports that I've read, AVG only has a detection rate of 85%, it still manages to find and filter out more of the rare viruses which tend to be unknown by other common antivirus programs. AVG (free version) Antivirus software

Advantages: FREE, UPDATES DAILY. I'VE NEVER HAD A VIRUS WITH THIS SOFTWARE!

...I am basing this review on Free version 8.0 which I have just downloaded and installed on all the PCs at home. The download is about 40 MB which took a few minutes. It installs easily, automatically unloaded and deleting all previous versions and has a new fresh looking interface. As soon as it runs for the first time it downloads all relevant updates. with the old version updates were quite slow, it now updates very quickly and you can set the time of day for looking for new updates, mine just connected and was ready for use again very quickly. Advantages: Custom shields, less memory hog, when shut down system preforms at ultimate performance

Avast Anti-Virus Home Edition (FREE)

Advantages: Has a screenaver that scans when activated.
Disadvantages: No built in Firewall.

Great anti-virus protection.

Advantages: Free and with almost daily updates.
Disadvantages: None for most users.

Norton Antivirus 2003
