Review of Sharp's Bedroom Furniture

Sharpe's Beginnings

Advantages: An excellent story, good characterisation, enjoyable book
Disadvantages: -

...a battle to the story. While Sharpe is obviously the main character, Cornwell also brings in a few other key characters. The tyrannical Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill is probably one of the best. He quickly establishes him as Sharpe's enemy within the army and the relationship between the two adds to the tension at certain points of the story. I was impressed with the depth Cornwell went into with other fringe characters and unusually couldn't find any weaker characters. Overall the Sharpe series has certainly grabbed my attention. This first book has been a very interesting read and held my attention throughout. At 371 pages it is a decent length and Cornwell seems to know what the reader wants from the story. I'm relatively new to the historical fiction genre but like Conn Iggulden, I have thoroughly enjoyed my first taste of Cornwell...

  My sharps sharp!!

Sharp for squirt

...I am sitting here in the library typing out a review on one of my latest acquisitions, namely a notebook. Not just any notebook, but the Sharp's Actius MM10 or in the UK, it might be the MM100. I bought this little baby while in the US about a year ago and it has accompanied me since then on all the trips I've taken. It is safe to say that so far, this machine has managed to accomplished all that I needed it to do, well almost all but a little bit of that later. Razor Sharp

Advantages: small, large screen, easy to use
Disadvantages: short battery life

However, the sharp phones are very easy to use, and the instruction manuals are extremely helpful. I loved my gx10, (especially seeing as it was my first flip-phone), so when I was offered a free upgrade to the gx15 I grudgingly accepted it. Any Given Sunday Soundtrack

Advantages: One inspiring track and 2 other good additions and thats it
Disadvantages: Too many fillers and the whole thing jumps around with no thought in track listing

.... These two usually rely on their flow to bring the track home but if youre not a fan the beats dont do anything for you so id have to put my thumbs down for this. Sole Sunday - Goldie Mob & Outkast Some dialouge from the film included in this but nothing too much else to report on it. Sharpe gets whipped

Advantages: Fills in some of the missing background to the "later" books, Pretty compelling read
Disadvantages: Not as fresh as some of the others in the series.

...any less believable it does make them less "fresh", after all both Cornwell and regular readers know how they are going to turn out. But perhaps you'd like to know a little more about these characters, well my answer to that is read the book, there is no way I could do justice to them. I can only tell you whether they were believable (or not), whether I could emphasise with them, and the sort of feelings I had towards them. The main character, Sharpe, is well drawn, but does come across as somewhat over ruthless at times, there are parts of his character that I like, but believe me, I wouldn't want to cross him. I think what makes him so realistic is that he isn't the perfect all action hero, he has very real flaws and desires, he's greedy, he yearns wealth and women, and is willing to break a few rules to get them. Sharpe is Furious!

Advantages: Sharpe Novel so always a leasure
Disadvantages: Disjointed feel

...Sharpe's Fury is the latest in the long running series by Bernard Cornwell detailing the heroics and exploits of Richard Sharpe, a common soldier during the Penninsular War whose skill in battle leads to promotion and a different set of problems battling against the class system of the British military. The novel was released last summer (august '06) and is the 21st book in the series (I think this makes Sharpe one of the longest running characters in terms of number of adventures). As Bernard Cornwell didn't know how popular the books (and later TV series) would be the stories were originally chronological, although in the last decade or so he has begun to fill in the gaps between these, hence this is the latest novel however chronologically the 11th story.
