WORLD'S BEST CABLE
Review of APC printer cable - 3 m by
ReviewDude
Advantages: Good Quality
Disadvantages: Over Priced, USB Now Used
...happy to see the little screws on the cable end. On my old cable I had these tiny little screws and had to get a screw driver if I wanted to unplug the cable but with this model I only need to turn the end to release it.
So if you have a printer which needs a cable like the APC why not spend the extra few pounds and buy this. It's very good quality and will never let you down.
I couldn't have been happier with it. I'm not too big a fan of USB cables for printers... Bring back APC!...

FastCAT5e Networking Cable
Review of Belkin FastCAT network cable - 10 m by
kelr101
Advantages: Quick Installation, Colour co-oridinated, Fast Speeds
Disadvantages: Price Varied
...in a range of lengths, according to your requirements and colours, i.e. red, blue, black, green and yellow.
For example at PC World you will be able to purchase the following FastCAT5e cables from Belkin
· 25ft (7.6M) £14.99
· 14ft (4.2M) £11.99
· 3ft (0.9M) £8.99
However if you are looking to use a CAT5e cable of longer length or for external requirements I recommend you contact a dedicated cable supplier, such as Universal Networks to ensure the suitability and safety of your product.
*Conclusion*
For a home user the Belkin FastCAT5e fulfils all the necessary requirements. Data, voice and video are flawlessly transmitted at high speeds, and the installation process is generally very easy. The network cable is ideal for file sharing and for broadband sharing, whilst maintaining speed and reliability, and the product...

APC Smart-UPS 420 (SU420INET)
Review of APC Smart-UPS 420VA - UPS - 420 VA by
robj
Advantages: Performance, Problem Free, Great Reporting
Disadvantages: None as yet
...in the UPS and turn it on, then turn on your device a few minutes later. The UPS will take a while to fully charge.
I support over 100 of these UPS’s all running at remote sites. Each is used to keep a file server online, and then using the Smart Serial Cable; we can monitor the UPS via that server.
The software that is included is APC PowerChute, some of the UPSs we have had included PowerChute 5-node Business Edition. This software states that it is compatible with UNIX, Microsoft Windows 3.x/95/98, Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 or later, Novell NetWare 3.11 or later.
The majority of these UPS’s are connected to Linux Servers, for monitoring we use apcupsd (See http://www.apcupsd.com). There is also a Webmin Module available which is useful for seeing the output of apcupsd via a web browser (See http...

How to set-up a home network
Review of Member Advice on Building a Home Network by
tagheur
Advantages: you don't have to fight to get on the Internet
Disadvantages: You don't talk anymore, except by E-mail
...to each PC then you might want to consider connecting some or all of them to the Hub/Switch using Wireless LAN. Wireless LAN works almost exactly the same way as wired LAN but there are no cables to worry about.
Finally, you need to install Internet sharing on your network. This just means that all of your PC’s can share a single Internet connection. It also makes setting up the net simpler due to the fact that the Gateway PC will be running something called DHCP. Don’t worry about it for now – you can learn about it later. OK, let’s have a list of all the things we’re going to need to install our network.
1. Network Interface Cards (NIC’s) – 1 per PC (+1 extra for Cable/ADSL)
2. Network Access Point/Wireless Router if you intend to go wireless
3. CAT5 cable (unless you intend to go all wireless) + fitting tools and connectors
4...

Network Cable is Boring
Review of Acer network cable by
Champ666
Advantages: It has stood up to 1 years of abuse
Disadvantages: Network Cable is Boring
...Hardly exciting is it network cable. The only thing that really intersts me about network cable is the things that come along it at high speed to my computer.
Considering that the function of the network cable is to get porno, arriving from the internet via my boradband router, to my computer screen as fast as possible, it is quite an important item. Most people just go for the cheapest, which is a shame considering how much is spent on an broadband connection over a year.
According to the BT engineer that came to fix my broadband 90% of the total signal loss goes in the last 100 meters. If you loose too much of your signal then this has a massive effect on the speed of your connection.
What I am saying here is that skimping on cables is really a false economy if you are paying over £200 a year for a broadband connection...

The Network Party
Review of 3Com EtherLink 10 PCI Combo by
real_rob_writer
Advantages: Fun
Disadvantages: None
...to get everything working well. It's well worth you all using the same operating system during the networking to simply make things easier. It's one of those occasions where everything should be fine whatever OS you use, but as so often happens this isn't the case.
The type of network we used runs at just over 1Mb per second, which is very fast considering that a 56K modem downloads at 5kb per second at best (remembering 1Mb = 1024Kb). It's more than fast enough to play games against each other or to share files over the network.
Even better is that it's cheap too. A netword card is only around £10-£20 and the cables and terminators are only a few pounds.
Once you've got your network up and running (budget a few hours for this) you need to get down to same game playing, and although it really isn't quite appropriate here I'm going...

To PS3 or not to PS3?
Review of Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) by
ayanayuk
Advantages: An amazing machine, expandable, some great features
Disadvantages: Expensive (but for a reason), almost internet reliant, no browser security
...of annoying bugs, but what about the poor people who don't or can't have broadband internet access? The PS3 is so reliant on net access that it's going to discourage people from buying one as if you don't have a router or wireless internet access then you can add *at least* another £40 or so to buy a wireless router, not to mention your monthly cost of telephone/net access and so on. The quality of the games in regards to image clarity is a lot better than on the PS2 especially when you've got an HDMI cable (I did cart the HD TV in from the living room to see which got Buggy shouting at me - see the things I do for Ciao?) and Need For Speed Pro Street on the PS2 and PS3 you'll notice a major difference.
So now we're in the Network section. Here you can access the browser, folding@home which is a distributed computing application which uses...

Another Cable Review!
Review of Belkin High Speed Internet Modem Cable modem cable - 2.1 m by
Weltmeister
Advantages: Durable; Brand name; Reliable
Disadvantages: Relatively expensive; Overkill for a 56k connection
...jack, which is a nice touch. They also prevent the tab from being snapped off. The plug itself is moulded onto the cable, although the BT plug is the standard crimp-on variety.
Looking at the plugs more closely, the contacts are plated with 24 CT gold. Although I am sceptical about any performance gains, I would agree that it will certainly help with durability, since the gold will resist oxidation which would cause signal degradation.
The technology used in the construction of this cable is very similar to the technology used for Belkin's standard range of Cat 5 ethernet network cables. In fact, Belkin claims that this cable can support data transfer rates up to 100 Mb/s. Those sort of speeds are way off into the future, in terms of what you can get through a standard telephone or even broadband line, so you have to question whether...

SliMP3. Innovation, Or Next 'Betamax'. U Choose
Review of SlimP3 by
BNibbles
Advantages: Tidies up the lounge
Disadvantages: Needs a PC running all the time music is wanted
..., which has been nobbled by the record company not to play in a PC, so I can’t ‘rip’ it, with possibly more to come.
It’s a pity that SliMP3 doesn’t come with a digital output, like DVD players and some CD players do. It just seems a little odd to be at the forefront of digital music and the have the last link in the chain switch back to analogue prematurely. OK, I know the speakers and my ears are too!
Apart from the low voltage cable from the mains unit, the only other connection needed is a network connection from your ‘server’ PC. If you haven’t got a network yet, possibly because you have just the one PC, then this is where SliMP3 is going to cost you some more money on top of its original £210 price label.
At the very least, you will need a LAN card (10/100 Network Interface Card) in your PC. At a pinch, you COULD then run...

The only network card you should buy
Review of 3Com 3C905B-TX by
MikeWhalley
Advantages: Works - perfectly.
Disadvantages: Perhaps a tad expensive for the home user to fork out on
...When I decided to upgrade my home network, I knew exactly which NIC was going to choose for my machines. The 3com 3C905-TX is /the/ network card to use to ensure a quick and reliable network. Obviously the network is only as good as the cabling and the hub connecting it together. But as far as network cards go - this one is the dogs b*llocks.
I say this because as I'm in the IT industry, I've got through quite a few makes of network cards, and this make seems to be the most reliable. Many a card have I had to replace because they give up the ghost or simply wont work in the PC. I've even had cards which have caught on fire, taking the motherboard with it! Now I'm not saying that this won't happen when you use this network card - let me give that little disclaimer! ;-).
I've seen 100mbit network cards for about 7-8 quid. In most...
