...Mac OS X Tiger is the latest version of the Mac OS X releases, taking over from where Mac OS X Panther (or 10.3) left off. Now..Lets move onto Tiger itself. So what's new? Apple's site quotes over 200+ new features in this OS. In reality there are a handful of new additions that are worth much to the end-user. Firstly a new searching technology called 'Spotlight' has been introduced. This is an effective indexing of the contents of the hard drive that includes both Filenames and indeed file contents (which means you can search for a reference to 'Dogshome' in a PDF document). When you first install Tiger, Spotlight takes 10-15minutes to index your disk contents, and this indexing is updated on a second by second basis meaning its always up to date. Advantages: Everything

...interface is completely new. Apple call this the 'Aqua' system, and it's main function is a funky blue colour throughout the system on folders, with horizontal lines across it. This is apparant in many applications, the toolbars, the Dock and loads of other stuff. -CARBON? COCOA? CLASSIC? ALL THE 'C's YOU WANT- On OS X, applications are split in to three different schemes. Carbon is the main scheme that most applications run under. Carbon will also work on OS 8 and 9, if you have the free CarbonLib extensions running. A good example of this is 'MacSolitare' and MSN Messanger which, before upgrading, I had as Carbon applications on OS 9. Advantages: Very similar to Windows XP
Disadvantages: Very different from Mac OS 9

...I use an Mac for work purposes and a PC at home. On the Mac, time is of great importance and every feature that saves time saves money and there are quite a few great time saving features on Mac OS X that do just that! If you are a PC user and currently use Windows XP then the new operating for the Apple Mac will be very appealing to you. It is very similar in many ways to that of Windows XP. One of the main differences that Mac OS X has which is one of my favourite features is that it has what is called a dock. This is a bar that can sit either at the bottom of the screen or on either side and you can use it to add in short cuts to all your software. ...the point that you open a terminal window the machine is every bit a Mac, but with the terminal running, you have everything that Unix users take for granted. Long time Mac users can take heart in the fact that you can use the system without ever touching the terminal, it's just a nice extra feature for the geekier among us. Apple's email application is wonderful, it's not very flashy, but it does exactly what a mail program should do, without trying to be everything else at the same time. The same applies to the other included programs, they all work well without carrying unnecessary weight, and with nice clean interfaces.
