I was watching out of my kitchen window and I saw a beautiful blackbird having a feast on the apple I had thrown onto the lawn. It had gone a bit old and wrinkled in the fruit bowl past its best no one wanted to eat it so I threw it onto the lawn, as I know that the birds will eat it as a winter feast. I often keep my old apple cores and apples that no one will eat for the birds. Blackbirds are the main birds that eat the apples all the thrush family eat apples and I have seen starlings eating then if they are hungry. ...Did you know that the apples you buy in supermarkets may be several years old? They're almost certainly older than a year. One local supermarket advertised 'French Apples, New Harvest' in February. I asked the fresh fruit department manager where in France apples were harvested at this time of the year. He told me, in all seriousness, that he considered apples that had newly come out of cold storage 'new harvest'. <blink> I tried to explain to him that apples grow on trees, not in cold storage units, but he did not understand what I was getting at. A bit more questioning, and I found out that the 'new harvest' apples in question were at least 18 months old. I reported this to the local Trading Standards office. ...After owning a Powerbook G4 previously, I needed a replacement - I looked around and considered buying a Sony Vaio - but ended up back with Apple and purchased the MacBook Core 2 Duo with Intel processor. I went for the smallest one of the 3 - only because it was purely for home use. I only use it for surfing the internet, downloading pictures and music so I did not need to much memory. Plus I have an external hardrive should I need to free up space. The software you get with a Mac is excellent -everything is much more 'friendly' compared to Microsoft - OK, Vista has arrived - but when you look at it Apple was doing all that years ago! Plus Apple have a new software edition called Tiger which comes out October 2007 which will knock socks off Vista. ...If I told you I'd just bought a pack of six individual apple pies for 37p, what would your initial thoughts be? If you're very slightly greedy, as I am, then your thoughts probably won't go any further than the simple 'apple pie to share'. However, the more cost conscious amongst us might take note of that 37p. I mean, that isn't a whole lot of money to pay for six apple pies, is it? Mr Kipling sells his apple pies for £1.03 for six in my local asda, so how can these be so cheap? Well, I'm guessing here, but I'd imagine that Asda have cut corners wherever possible, when producing their Smart Price Apple Pies. For example, these apple pies are sat on your bog-standard six slot plastic cake case, each encased in its own little metal cup, then all six sealed into one plastic bag which proclaims 'Asda Smart Price 6 Apple Pies on the front... ...I love fruit juice but I will drink any muck that I find on the supermarket shelves. I tend to choose the cheaper ones and although they are unauthentic and completely synthetic, I still dont mind them! But that was until yesterday!! I tasted Sainsbury's Cloudy Apple Juice. My word, that is good stuf!! The juice comes in a tall square carton, not the rectangular ones you usually see. Tastefully decorated with photos of apples on a green background. The carton has a white tab to keep the juice fresh after it has been opened and also to asist pouring. The juice itself is longlife and unsweetened.
