If You're Not Noah, Visit This Arc!
Advantages: Great Views, Under 25's Get Reduced Rate
Disadvantages: 9 Euros For The View
...History & Background
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Arc de Triomphe is located at the end of the Champs-Elysees in the Place Charles de Gaulle. It was designed in 1806 by architect Jean Chalgrin. It sits on a roundabout with 12 exits, like the centre of a clock face.
The name gives away what the monument is, an arc. It stands over 51 metres in height and is 45 metres wide. It is a giant 3D rectangle with an arc carved out in the middle.
The Arc de Triomphe is quite famous and recognised as one of France's most famous monuments; its purpose was to honour those who fought for France in any of the Napoleonic wars. It is also home to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Today the Arc de Triomphe is recognised as an international tourist hot spot and somewhere to visit of national interest and historic meaning to the French people...
Arc du Triomphe - nice view
Advantages: quite cheap, panoramic views of Paris, interesting attraction
Disadvantages: v.busy,
...I went to Paris for the weekend last summer with my girlfriend and had a great time. It soon became clear that almost every major attraction offers amazing panoramic views over Paris and the Arc de Triomphe is no exception. It is one of the most famous monuments in Paris and fronts many postcards.
The Arc de Triomphe is at the western end of the Champs-Elysees; a sight in itself. The arch is a tribute of respect to those that have fought for France, particularly during the Napoleonic wars. It was designed by Jean Chalgrin in 1806; his work was taken on by Huyon in 1811 when Chalgrin sadly died. However, the monument was not completed until 1836 by Goust and Huyot. The Arc stands at 165ft tall, 148ft wide and 72ft deep, the design inspred by the Roman Arch of Titus. It has been unchanged for many years now but has to be occasionally...
Treck To The Top of The Triomphe!
Advantages: Great Views, Free for Under 25's, Historically Interesting
Disadvantages: 284 Stairs to the top!
...As I have been to France a few times in the past, but never to Paris, on my recent long weekend to the city of love, I made the most of doing all the ?tourist? things that one should do while in Paris, including a visit to the beautiful Arc De Triomphe.
The Arc De Triomphe is located on the Champs Elysees which is the large main avenue in Paris, very famous for its beauty and array for designer shops. To be honest I didn?t think too much of it, but it was pleasant enough.
The Arc is actually situated in the centre of ?Place de l'Etoile? which is a large 12 exit roundabout. It?s very busy and the roads aren?t marked so it?s an accident hotspot, but very interesting to watch.
To get to the Arc, I wouldn?t definitely suggest the underpass that is on the Champs Elysees rather than risk your life crossing the road. The nearest metro...
A must see in Paris!!
Advantages: Situated in the center of Paris, so offers a good view of most parts of the city.
Disadvantages: there might be a long line to go to the top
...A gift to Paris from Napoleon and situated in the middle of Paris, I think it's a great architectural piece, very detailed from up close, the ceiling of the arch is absolutely beautiful, the entire arch and most of the outside is sculpted. Napoleon wanted to celebrate the victories and courage of the French armies.
If you do go see it, you will see the resting place of an unknown solider who died during the World War I and who was never identified. It symbolizes the soldiers and civilians who died during the war.
The Arc is located at the beginning of the Avenue des Champs Elysees, therefore it's a good idea to visit the Arc de Triomphe on a day you planned to do some shopping. That will save you some time.
Also, you should really go up to the top of the Arc, you will have a very good view of Paris due...
Simply Triumphant
Advantages: Less crowded than the Eiffel Tower, Great Views
Disadvantages: Thirsty Work, not
...In the first rush of love my fiancé and I decided to take a few days off and go away somewhere, a very Bridget Jones mini-break scenario! After looking at a few cities that we thought we would like to visit we decided on Paris. Paris is traditionally known as the city of romance and it did not disappoint. However this review is about the Arc de Triomphe, so I will stop rambling now.
The Arc de Triomphe was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 after his victory in Austerlitz, regarded as his greatest victory of all time and destroyed the armies of enemies Russia and Austria. The arc was not finished until 1836, after Napoleon's reign had finished and indeed after his death in 1821. The structure was designed by Jean François Thérèse Chalgrin and completed during the reign of Louis Philippe.
The Arc de Triomphe stands at around 50 metres...
♫ "Aux Champs Elysees ♫
Advantages: Good view...
Disadvantages: ...but not the best
...♫ "Aux Champs Elysees? Aux Champs Elysees? Au soleil? sous la pluie?" ♫
Do you know the song?
If not, at least you must have heard of the Champs Elysees. French people like to call it "The most beautiful avenue of the world". I am sorry to contradict them, but I have always wondered why. It is in fact quite ordinary.
You'll find lots of cars, bad traffic, nice crowded shops and over-expensive coffee. That's it. Oh no! How could I forget? Among all that, you will find one of the most famous sights in Paris: the Arc de Triomphe.
It was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 in order to commemorate his victories, but wasn't finished until 1836. It is 50 meters tall and 45 meters wide.
I always thought the Arc de Triomphe was nice to look at, but I had never bothered visited it? until last summer.
I had taken my...
La piece de resistance!
Advantages: Location, Comfort, Class
Disadvantages: Price
...I stayed at the Hilton Hotel Arc Du Triomphe in Paris for one night (Saturday night) whilst in Paris for the weekend. We booked approximately 3 weeks prior to travel.
The location is approximately 5-10 minutes away from the Champs Elysees in a quite area near to the beautiful Parc Marceau. The metro is a couple of minutes away, but the Airfrance airport bus is unfortunately about a 20-25 minutes walk, so best bet is a taxi from the airport.
After getting a taxi from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport (which is actually quite an atrocious airport for one of the biggest and most important cities in the world), we arrived at the hotel at around 11.00am. Check-in is not until 12.00 but that wasn't a problem, and they let us check in to the room early.
The check-in was very simple and we were greated by a very pleasant receptionist...
The Eiffel Tower isn't the only landmark in Paris
Advantages: Spectacular monument in central Paris
Disadvantages: None
...Situated at the end of the Champs Elysées sits the Arc de Triomphe, a wonderful archway built to commemorate Napoleon's Grand Armée.
I had visited Paris on several occasions in the past and, despite having visited the Arc before, my trip in September was the first time that I had been to the top of this marvellous structure. For just 8?, or 6.20? for under 25's, you can climb to the top of this 50m high structure to get some impressive views across the city. You can see down the Champs Elysées to the Place de Concorde and Le Louvre, across the rooftops to the Eiffel Tower that sticks out from a sea of white or up towards the Grande Arche.
The arc is situated in the centre of a roundabout from which 12 roads feed onto it making it probably one of the world's most dangerous stretches of road. To make it to the centre safely use...
Formal elegance
Advantages: Elegant, upmarket and nice rooms
Disadvantages: Pricey and could be too formal for some
...I have recently been to Paris as many people who read a lot of my reviews will know and another hotel that I saw whilst there was the Sofitel Arc De Triomphe. This hotel was another one of my favourites due to the nice standard although I did prefer the sister hotel Sofitel Le Faubourg out of the two.
The hotel:
As I am sure is obvious by now from my opening statement the hotel is part of the Sofitel chain. It is classed as a 4 star luxury hotel and is certainly fair to say it is. The hotel is more of a classic luxury type rather than modern luxury by the way it is designed and the style of the rooms.
Location:
The hotel is located pretty close to the Arc De Triomphe which I'm sure is obvious by the name but, I thought it might be worth mentioning that this is indeed the case, as with so many hotels nowadays the name can...
Les Arcs 1800
Advantages: ease of access, huge ski area, good resorts, excellent apres ski
Disadvantages: poorly groomed pistes and very busy at weekends
...It is very easy to get to, about 7/8 hours easy driving from Calais, you can take the Eurostar from London straight to Bourg St Maurice (which is the town at the foot of the mountains, below the three resorts Arc Pierre Blanche, Arc 1800 and Arc 20000 which make up the resort of Les Arcs) or you can fly to either Lyon or Geneva which are both about 3 hours drive from the resorts.
Arc Peirre Blanche is connected to Bourg St Maurice by Funicular Railway or there is a regular bus service to take you to the three high altitude ski resorts.
Arc 1800 is the biggest and busiest and is great for all standards and abilities of skiers, and also families as there is a choice of several kindergartens and kid ski schools. Also, the resort is traffic free, all vehicles having to park on the outskirts. There are plenty of bars, restaurants...
