Archos 605 WiFi 160 GB Review

Advantages: Record from TV/DVD, Excellent for watching movies, has many features
Disadvantages: Expensive upgrades, poor inbuilt speaker, limited for gamers

...The Archos 605 WiFi has many features such as the option to record from the television, to surf the internet, it even has the ability to be used as a GPS. One downside is a lot of these features require additional money to be spent. If you're a gamer then you might be a little disappointed by the fact that the with the Archos 605 you will be limited to only playing flash games. The Archos 605 basically just isn't a gaming device. If gaming is your main focus then you would be better off with a sony PSP or the GP2X. You can also store/view pictures, which is a pretty ordinary feature on such a device but still appreciated. The touchscreen though not completely necessary in most cases does seem to work pretty well. One thing I did notice about the Archos 605 is that the sound quality of the inbuilt speaker is pretty poor...

Archos AV504 160GB

Advantages: Huge memory and easy navigation. 4.3" widescreen lcd display
Disadvantages: Quite bulky and does not come with a good carry case

...One of the main advantages of this PVR is that it has a 160GB hard drive, imagine what you can store on that. You need a separate docking station to record from the TV or sattelite box and it is an extra £69 unless you buy this from QVC, they include it. Clearly the reason for purchasing this is to record and watch videos and you can record a huge number of DVDs on to it. The draw bck is that it has digital rights protection and that stops you playing back on to other televisions; you can only watch it on the Archos if the DVD had the protection built in. It is easy to set up to record TV or to watch it on TV, but I noticed it distorted images from my PACE sattelite box. On other boxes and digital freeview it recorded and played back perfectly. Why Buy An I-Pod? - Archos 605 with WiFi

Advantages: Large Screen, Lightweight & WiFi Enabled
Disadvantages: Only 4Gb, WiFi could be quicker

...and a TV programme guide is also available with the optional plug-ins. My Opinion I purchased my Archos 605 from E-Bay just before christmas and really couldn't be happier with it although it only has a 4gb memory capacity it can be upgraded via an SD memory card it is really easy to use and customise and is compatible with near enough all of the files i have tried playing on it and plug-ins are available for all the files it doesn't play. The WiFi connection is a little slow but is still really usefull as it allows you to download or stream files from almost anywhere however you do need to download the web browser plugin from Archos's website to do this. The screen is a good size for watching films on and is really high quality also the addition of a stand was a great idea as it means that you dont have to hold onto it for an hour...

A marked improvement over previous Archos models

Advantages: Record directly from TV
Disadvantages: Costly upgrades needed to achieve the units full potential

...I bought the new Archos 605 wi-fi with some trepidation, as I was replacing a 604 which had died after less than a year. I felt compelled to stay with the brand as I had built up a stock of peripherals (chargers etc) which will only work with Archos machines. First, the good: The 605 is more than capable at playing films, music, displaying photos, and going online. The touch screen is a nice gimmick, although I find that I don't use it much apart from web browsing. Navigating is still easier through the buttons. By far the biggest improvement over the 604 is the ability to record in widescreen. The previous models all failed to recognise UK widescreen, instead compressing the image so that people appeared tall and thin. Finally Archos have adressed this problem and the unit can now truly call itself a widescreen recorder...
