Archos AV480

Advantages: Amazing picture quality, easy to use software, attractive product and interface
Disadvantages: Long video conversion software, very expensive!

...I decided that I'd try and top my friends' new Ipods by buying a multimedia player. Looking at the market, the new Archos AV400 series easily came on top. They brought out two models, the AV420, the 20gb model, and the AV480, the 80gb model. Thinking of all the mps and films I intended to put on there, I decided to go to the 80gb model, added expensive, but definately worth it. All the software needed to convert files so they are compatable with the Archos come on the system, and are easy to install and use. I did find, though, that converting a full length film does take a few hours, which can be a bit of hassle. The Archos comes with its own little docking station that allows you to connect it to a television. Disadvantages: Quite Big

...computer but do not have the cable handy. It also provides extra storage which is always handy. Overall, this PMP is excellent, and I think that the only better PMP is the Archos AV500, which I am now looking to buy....

Multimedia on the move Archos AV700 (40GB)

Advantages: Everything you could want apart from a phone!!
Disadvantages: Earphones might be a proble for some people

...I previously bought the Archos Jukebox and have had it for a few years. I had been really pleased with it, unfortunately it was not holding its charge as well and decided to upgrade. I wasn't 100% sure about buying an AV700 because of the reviews I had read about it. I had read some reviews which pointed out some difficulty when transferring files. I must say I have not had any problems with transferring and files from my pc and in fact have found it very easy. Other problems which I have read about are the viewing screen quality. Advantages: portability
Disadvantages: battery life

...This model now seems defunct, however, the new archos (av700) seems large and cumbersome. The massive screen just seems impractical for it's portability. If a simple video/music player is what you are looking for then this is the answer. The price has come down a lot recently. The software does seem slow and songs can take a while to load when the harddrive is full. but the information that is displayed is relevant and the sound quality is good. Some features that are not immediately noticable are the button lock and in built speaker toggle, which is available when the each of the option buttons are held down for 2 seconds. Archos AV504 160GB

Advantages: Huge memory and easy navigation. 4.3" widescreen lcd display
Disadvantages: Quite bulky and does not come with a good carry case

...One of the main advantages of this PVR is that it has a 160GB hard drive, imagine what you can store on that. You need a separate docking station to record from the TV or sattelite box and it is an extra £69 unless you buy this from QVC, they include it. Clearly the reason for purchasing this is to record and watch videos and you can record a huge number of DVDs on to it. The draw bck is that it has digital rights protection and that stops you playing back on to other televisions; you can only watch it on the Archos if the DVD had the protection built in. It is easy to set up to record TV or to watch it on TV, but I noticed it distorted images from my PACE sattelite box. On other boxes and digital freeview it recorded and played back perfectly. ...This review is on the fantastic archos av700, why I bought it and even though I am currently thinking about selling it, I still loved, and love having it. Well I bought this, because my old mp4 player, which to be honest was rubbish broke. So when I was looking around for a new one, I came across this one, I saw the prices for it to be around £400, which for me was a lot of money to spend on something I was unsure I would want. However whilst looking around staples one day, I cam across these at a reduced price. They were £300, which is still a lot of money, but at this time they were actually selling for more near £400 on eBay. So after a few days of thought I decided to buy one of these, so I went to staples and forked out £300 to get one. I'm not sure how much they are to buy now, but this was about 2 years ago so no doubt...

I'd Buy Archos Again!!!

Advantages: Large Viewing Screen, Great Picture Quality
Disadvantages: The Hard Drive needs defragmenting occasionally!

...synchronise with each other! The files are converted into a format easily read by the AV700! The jack point on the AV700 is a standard 6mm so any headphones and portable speakers are easily attached. It also has a few built in games, which can be updated and added to, but they are very limited, and could be expanded upon. Yet my thinking on this is if i wanted a portable games console i'd buy something else! The filing system on the AV700 is windows based and is easily arranged as required. The hard drive is more than adaquate for my use, and space is easily cleared by deleting as and when required. This unfortunately causes possible problems and requires defraging every once in a while. I say this through experience as my picture and sound started to come out of sync in playback. The technical support team at Archos were very helpful...

...If you are an i-pod loyal looking for a new video device than look elsewhere, but for those seeking an alternative look no further. The Archos 605 provides a worthy alternative to the I-pod video, although it suffers from a less ergonomic design and is heavier due in part to the hard drive. However where it does better the ipod is it's durability with a rugged case and strong solid build quality feel to the buttons it will be hard to break. The large screen makes viewing a pleasure and the battery is capable, in my experience, of at least 5 hours solid video playback but i am yet to meet the claim of 17 hours music playback advertised with the unit averaging about 13-15 hours without recharge. The interface is simple and straight forward and should take a short period of time to familiarize yourself with. The memory is generous...
