Archos Gmini 400

...I brought the Archos Gmini 400 when i wanted to buy an mp3 player, i had considered almost every one (ipod mini was almost certainly going to be the one i chose) untill i stumbled up this little baby. The Gmini can do everything the average mp3 player can do, and a whole lot more! Videos photos and games! and for less than an ipod. It has 15hours battery whilst playing mp3s and 5hours when watching video. It can be hooked up to a tv and can be played though that. The display has vidid colours and you can choose your own background and theme (from any of your photos) The display shows all the mp3's information whilst playing and even shows the album art. Gmini Cricket

Advantages: Audio, video, photo for a reasonable price

They have replaced it with the Gmini 402 which is basically the same device with greater flexibility for file formats, and the Gmini 402 Camcorder which is the same as the Gmini 402, but with a built-in camcorder. Nevertheless I have seen the Gmini 400 still on sale in Dixons and this insignificant upgrade may actually help prices drop on the original. I bought mine at Heathrow Duty Free for under 200 quid. I have seen them in the high street for £240+. Amazon currently have them New and Used only from £194.99, but if you have a way of doing it, your best bet is to pick one up in the States and pay Dollars for it. Ipod, Ishmod!

Advantages: 40gb, relatively tough, good colour screen, compact flash reader
Disadvantages: A bit weighty, not good for jogging etc... also may attract theives!

...This is my first review for a long time, and believe me, this little baby was more than worth coming out of hiding to do a review for. I'm not one for being a sell out, but I would parade around in a T-shirt saying 'Archos are the bomb'. If you are in the market for a hard drive based Mp3 player, you owe it to yourself to at least consider this. They are pricey brand new (got mine used for a relatively meagre 160 notes on the ebay) but if I could afford a new one, I wouldn't feel ripped off by the slightly higher than Ipod price tag. ...If you are an i-pod loyal looking for a new video device than look elsewhere, but for those seeking an alternative look no further. The Archos 605 provides a worthy alternative to the I-pod video, although it suffers from a less ergonomic design and is heavier due in part to the hard drive. However where it does better the ipod is it's durability with a rugged case and strong solid build quality feel to the buttons it will be hard to break. The large screen makes viewing a pleasure and the battery is capable, in my experience, of at least 5 hours solid video playback but i am yet to meet the claim of 17 hours music playback advertised with the unit averaging about 13-15 hours without recharge. Advantages: Great screen quality and size, built in speaker and stand.
Disadvantages: The only downside is that it is fragile, and can be hard to get used to the on screen keyboard.

The Archos 705 WIFI Media Player

Advantages: Touch screen, large memory, great screen resolution, wireless internet.
Disadvantages: Maximum volume could be better through the in-built speakers

...The Archos 705 WIFI is probably one of my favourite purchases of the last 18 months. For its fantastically wide range of features including a touch screen, wireless internet, hard drive video storage (recordings can be made directly from a tv), photo storage and a great music library, this is the best value for money Multi-media player I have come across. The Archos comes with lots of accessories including a car headrest mounting case which is great for when your trying to entertain the kids in the back of the car on long journeys. Its memory is around 40gb which is quite large for its size and allows you to store thousands of songs and around many hours of videos. The resolution is also extremely impressive....
