...I have been an ipod fan since they first came out and to be honest had never really heard about the Archos mp3 players. However last year I was given one as a gift and at the time I was thinking id rather have an ipod any day. But after using I discovered the qualities the Archos has. For a start the design looks very nice, its silver small and very tidy. However it does tend to seem fragile as I was afraid that I might drop it or scratch the screen. Hence immediately I brought a cover from eBay which cost me £20 but its better than damaging an item worth £200. 20GB is more than enough to store music but when you have videos to store it can be a problem. As an average film after converting is around 1GB. The conversion process to put the videos on the Archos is a lengthy and tedious one. To convert one video and put it on my Archos...

...This model now seems defunct, however, the new archos (av700) seems large and cumbersome. The massive screen just seems impractical for it's portability. If a simple video/music player is what you are looking for then this is the answer. The price has come down a lot recently. The software does seem slow and songs can take a while to load when the harddrive is full. but the information that is displayed is relevant and the sound quality is good. ...I bought this Archos 20Gb player about 3 months ago so that I could listen to my music whilst on the plane. I chose it as it was the same price as a 2Gb flash player, and a friend of mine had told me good things about Archos. I ordered it from Amazon after reading the good reviews on here and on their website. Upon opening the box, what first struck me was the size - it's tiny! The first thing I did was give the Gmini a good charge before using it. A great feature of the charger is it works in the UK and the US through the use of a clip on UK attachment - a very neat idea. Sadly this is the only way to charge it as it does not accept a charge through the USB socket. Transferring files to the device is really easy. ...The XS202 immediately struck me as a good deal, 20gb for the price of an ipod mini?! When I got it I was not dissappointed, it looks amazing (that's real metal) and comes with all you need to get started! The player does not use any software, just drag and drop (or if you want media player's syncronising feature) which makes it very easy to update and very versatile. I would suggest getting a program like "Tag & Rename" to ensure that all your music files are named correctly aswell. The sound quality is awesome, i can;t fault it, it doesn't skip, which is something HDD mp3s can do and very rarely freezes up, something not even ipod can match. Nope, I bought it because it was the only 20GB mp3 player on the shelf, at the time, that was within my budget (it cost me £168). At the time, I hadn't even heard of Archos, nevermind the Gmini XS 202 that I would soon find myself buying. But now that I've done a bit of research, I can see that Archos are slowly rising in the mp3 player market. They've released a wide range of products from flash memory to large hard drive mp3 players; and colour screens with video capability (but you won't get that with the Gmini XS 202). But back to the Gmini XS 202. Sound quality isn't great. And to be perfectly honest, I believe its the one area where it does let you down. There is a noticeable difference in sound quality between the Gmini and an Ipod. It's not rubbish...

The Archos Gmini 202 XC MP3 (what a tongue twister!) is very small considering its memory, in fact, I have read that it is the smallest 20Gb MP3 on the market. The case consists of three metal layers: two plates (front and back) and a metal strip which runs round the edge of the device between the plates. The screen is about 3x3cm which I think is a decent size but it cannot display pictures, videos, data files stored, etc. because of its type. The 'DC IN' and USB ports are in the side of the MP3 player and are small enough to not cause any problems (although my key almost got stuck once). Gmini402 is a device that plays videos, music, and you can view photos, it is small, stylish, and can fit easily into a pocket. The Gmini is very simple to use, there is no installation required, you simply plug it into your computer (via usb 2.0) and it appears as external hard drive, you can then simply drag and drop songs, videos and photos onto the device.
