...I suppose there's not much point beating around the bush: when I think back to my stay at the Hotel Mercur in Arhus, it's difficult to find many positive things to say about it. It wasn't my first choice of hotel in the city, but as I had to book at fairly short notice, that didn't bother me unduly. Only when I arrived and told colleagues where I would be staying did their reaction trigger a faintly uneasy feeling: "You're at the Mercur? Oh. Hmm. Well, I suppose you can't change it now". That much was correct - it appears that the hotel capacity in Denmark's second city has not kept pace with the commercial developments, and there is quite a shortage of available beds.
Of course, this means that the hotels have no incentive to mount any sort of pricing war to take business from one another - there is no need to drop prices as high...

Fabulous Stay - Go for the weekend
Advantages: City centre location, great buffet breakfast, peaceful rooms
Disadvantages: No spa on site
...We stayed at the Radisson for 3 nights in June and it was great.
Arhus had so much to see and the hotel was perfectly suited to walk to most of the attractions.
We had a standard double room and the bed was large and the room very quiet. We booked the day we arrived in Denmark and the price was very reasonable. You know you are going to get a certain standard with the Radisson chain.
The breakfast had a very large selection including the cooked items (sausages, eggs, bacon) and many different breads, juices, cheeses and cereals.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the lobby is full of great tourist information leaflets.
The hotel is a 5-10 minute walk from the train station and the bus from the airport stops at the train station....

Stuck out in the icy wastes of nineteenth century Sweden, he had a lot of time on his hands - well you would do, there is only so much fun you can have in a rural location in the 1870s, you know. So what did Lars do? Why, he took some of the crop of winter wheat that was growing around his hometown of Arhus and decided to use it to develop a brand spanking new method for distilling vodka. Lars' method became known as the continuous distillation technique, as it, well, involved continually distilling the fermented grain, you know. The result of his experimentation was a very pure, better tasting and high quality tipple, which he named "Absolut Rent Branvin" (Absolute Pure Vodka). Advantages: relaxed, clean, friendly, scandinavian, shopping

...are out for the night Train Nightclub is a popular venue.
Culturally there is not a great deal to pick up on. Aros is Arhus' brand new centrepiece, a good quality art museum. Then there is "den gammel by" - "the old town" which is an area of Aarhus that has been preserved from the middle ages, featuring people wearing traditional clothes doing traditional jobs. This is highly rated in the town itself, but my own (and my friends) opinions are that it is pants. I don't think there are many of this type of attraction in Denmark so its still novel, but compared to England where the concept is commonplace it is not a stand-out attraction. The cathedral downtown is more interesting for my money - just because it's so huge. Arhus has a great football stadium, with a great atmosphere (ask for tickets near the supporters club) but unfortunately...

The most notable attraction is the old town (Den Gamle By) which is a museum of old houses which is designed to give the impression of what life had been like in old Danish town.
