Disadvantages: High street is Hilly

...When I lived in Surrey, Guildford was one of my neasrest towns and it really does have a little of everything. From the castle standing in it's own pleasant gardens, a good theatre at the Yvonne Arnaud, often previewing plays before a West End run, but at a fraction of the price.Trips along the river Wey are availiable, beautiful to get away from it all on a busy Saturday afternoon. Of course there are good shopping facilities, with speciality shops in the side streets and up the cobbled hilly High Street and there is also a modern shopping centre called the Friars for under cover shopping in comfort. Just outside the town, is the fairly modern Cathedral which is worth a visit and of course Guildford is a university town, so it brims often with young life....

Review of Guildford (England)

What a shame he lost his head...

Advantages: Looks to be over Carnoustie now.
Disadvantages: Has a reckless streak where a safe and sure approach would do.

...For the promotion of the game in France, a victory at Carnoustie in 1999 for Jean van de Velde would have been a great boost. Not since Arnaud Massey in 1907 has The Open been won by a Frenchman. Of course, the fact is that Van de Velde exhibited that classic flaw, as shown so often by French, the ability to have a bloodrush and lose it big style. French rugby teams have been known to lose it on the pitch with amazing regularity, with a sending off here, penalties conceded. However van de Velde really lost it big style. He later managed to play the eighteenth in six strokes using just a putter. However van de Velde has been able to come back from his shcoker at Carnoustie, and has played well. Of course until he wins a major, there will always be the Spectre of the 18th at Carnoustie. Here's hoping for his sake he can win a major....

Medieval Sherlock pits his wits against the Inquisition

Advantages: Beautifully shot, atmospheric and intelligent
Disadvantages: Perhaps too intelligent for its own good

Georgian Guildford

Advantages: Nice cobbled High Street, Georgian buildings. Shopping
Disadvantages: A bit impersonal

...good hotels and bed and breakfast establishments.Culture buffs will also find Guildford does not lag behind and theatre lovers have the Yvonne Arnaud theatre to go to. Another pleasing aspect is that Guildford is surrounded by some charming countryside and many walkers use the place as their starting-point for treks over the hills of the North Downs.My memories of Guildford are pleasant ones-I was stationed not very far away and used to visit Guildford during the week and sometimes on the weekends. I always found it to be a sosphisticated sort of place with classy shops,good pubs and fine eateries. Also I should add with a lot of seemingly well-heeled residents....

Sisterly Love

Advantages: Excellent performances and direction
Disadvantages: Not in English language

Frederic Pierrot plays probation officer Capitain Faure, a man strangely obsessed with the River Orinoco who seems to need the support of Juliette more than she needs his. Serge Hazanavicius is admirable as husband Luc, understandably mistrustful of Juliette and unhappy with her presence in his household. His father-in-law, Papy Paul, is played by Jean-Claude Arnaud; unable to speak since his stroke, the performance relies solely on facial expression. This is Claudel's first film, but it is a masterpiece that shows how life can be rebuilt through love, trust and support. Relationships develop gradually, and conversations become more meaningful throughout the course of the film. Review of I've Loved You So Long (DVD)

Guildford, a place to live or just visit

Advantages: Lively, prosperous, full employment for now, fine for shopping
Disadvantages: expensive, agressive, impersonal, not a place to put down roots

...residential roads with huge houses, a highly attractive old High Street with cobbles and overhanging balconies. The beautiful castle grounds, sweeping down to Millmead and the River Wey, by which the Yvonne Arnaud theatre sits. South of the town itself there is miles and miles of lovely countryside, going all the way to the South Coast, about 35 miles away, interrupted by little picturesque towns and villages like Godalming, Shalford, Ripley and Cranleigh. Plenty of walking and mountain biking country too for those who like outdoor pursuits, particularly on the North Downs to the south of the town. Guildford is a thriving town. Somewhere over the Rainbow

...The Rainbow Rage is not the way I went over the Rainbow. But for thousands of bikers it is an annual 100km race from St Arnaud, on the Nelson side of the Rainbow Valley, through this most fantastic part of the South Island of New Zealand to Hanmer, and a waiting hot pool plunge. For me, I went over from the Hanmer end, after doing the Molesworth High Country Station trip in the comfort of our 4X4. We saw several mountain bikers along the way and I know which way I prefer to take in this pristine sub alpine beauty. The trip has some high saddle passes where you can see high country farming, lakeside wonder, huge, craggy mountains and a gate or two to open along the way.
