Arnold Schoenberg's relationship to Judaism was just about as complicated as Bob Dylan's: both embraced and dropped the religion a number of times and both used their conflicted feelings as the basis for some of their best music. Moses und Aron, Schoneberg's last opera, reflects his complex relationship to religion, both musically and philosophically. The libretto, penned by Schoenberg himself and based the book of Exodus, is insanely complicated and the music--all written in 12-tone rows--is equally difficult (Schoenberg made it a point never to use unaltered repetition in his work, with the idea that each time the listener heard his works, they would hear something new). Although he started the work in 1930, it remained unfinished because Schoenberg couldn't find the answers to the philosophical questions he was seeking. This 1995 recording is Boulez's second version (the first was recorded in 1974) and is a distillation of the conductor's powers, reflecting not only a deeper understanding of the score, but immersing itself in the subtleties of Schoneberg's complexities. Chris Merritt's superb tenor as Aron and Pittman-Jenning's Moses Sprechstimme "arias" perfectly complement this "difficult but rewarding" tour de force. --Kenneth Goldsmith ... less
