Around the World in 80 Days

Advantages: Some funny moments, its entertaining, range of actors used (both English & American)
Disadvantages: Slightly slow in parts, a bit cheesy/predictable

...... but anyway, back to this movie... For anyone who isn't aware of the plot of 'Around the World in 80 Days', well really the clue is in the title! it basically tells the story of a somewhat eccentric Victorian English inventor called Phileas Fogg (played by Steve Coogan), who ends up making a bet with the head of the Royal Academy of Science, that he is able to basically circumnavigate the globe in no more than 80 days. If he manages this, then the head has to resign and he gets his position but if he doesn't manage it, then he has to leave the academy and never invent again. So, of course, he's very determined to prove that he can do it and he sets out on this long adventure to see the world. He doesn't travel alone however, having somewhat accidentally found his new 'valet' Passepartout (which isn't his name but is what he blurts out...

Around The World In 120 Minutes

Advantages: Quite funny, good family film
Disadvantages: lacks something for more mature viewers

...Jackie Chan is one of those actors you can either take or leave. Since he broke into the main stream he has appeared in a number of Comedy?s and the majority of them have been very successful. So having enjoyed most of his previous films, when I?d seen he had teamed up with Steve Coogan, one of my favourite comedians it seemed like a good combination. So the recent chance to see Around The World In 80 Days seemed like one I shouldn?t pass up. Of course I was still open-minded, regardless of the cast as it still had the potential to be awful. Advantages: Theme tune, characters, and childhood memories
Disadvantages: Only 5 episodes on DVD, animation is an acquired taste

Research on the Internet has informed me that 28th April 1987 was declared national Willy Fog day by Andy Crane (who was at the time in the broom cupboard on Children's BBC with Edd the duck!) Apparently viewers could write in to get song sheets to sing along. Although I don't actually remember this (perhaps due to being 5), there is no need to fear - after watching 26 episodes I'd be surprised if anyone couldn't sing along - besides the dvd has subtitles! You might even remember this part: "Hey now the story must go on, 'cos a lot of time has gone, we must be ready to go away. 80 days around the world, we'll find a pot of gold, just sitting where the rainbow's ending. Around the world in 80 judo-kicks

Advantages: Jackie Chan fight sequences, silly fun
Disadvantages: REALLY silly, a plot you could fish with, and a travesty to literature

Perhaps it's because such a statement is so easy to believe of our own time that there remains such appeal in the science of Victorian London, when man flying in the air was nothing but a flight of fancy, and electricity was a novelty, let alone the myriad contraptions we now take for granted (and which are useless as soon as there's a power cut). Yes, it's fun to look back to a day when circumnavigating the globe in three months would be a feat almost beyond fancy! Jules Verne's classic tale of inventor Phileas Fogg and his wager (not a 'bet', you see - he's a gentleman) to travel around the world in eighty days has made several appearances on screen. ...The GameCube release of Animal Crossing was a perfect example of how annoying it can be to live life as a PAL territory gamer. After the release in Japan and America, Europe still had to wait for years before the game finally showed up on our shores with Nintendo sporting the 'localisation issues' excuse. When it did come, however, and for those that hadn't already imported it gamers were greeted with pretty much what they had wanted for so long, a living, breathing overly cute world inside your GameCube. Nintendo haven't made the same mistake again in delaying the DS version of the game with a wait of a few months seeming like a breeze after the gigantic wait for the GC release. Though will this new version be enough for gamers already with the GC game to spend money on it again? For those not savvy with the previous versions...

Advantages: Good stunts

...I asked for this film to be added to Ciao but I wasn't informed that it had been so I nearly missed out on writing this review and I've certainly missed out on being the first person. But, better late than never! Here is my review of the film which I saw at a preview a few weeks ago. This version of the Jules Verne classic tale is directed by Frank Coraci and sees its two main stars engaging in a mix between drama, romance and slap-stick comedy. With the various kung-fu fighting scenes, it's a modern twist on an old favourite. It's a certificate PG. Coogan plays inventor Phileas Fogg and Chan ends up becoming his companion Passepartout when Fogg takes on a bet that he can get around the world in 80 days. Ewan Bremner, Jim Broadbent and Cecille de France also co-star. The plot starts at a very fast pace with the story...

...Around the World in 80 Gardens is a gardening programme with a difference, because it's looking at the contribution of gardens to cultures around the world rather than explaining how to grow your own garden or the basics of garden design. Disadvantages: the worst book in the world!

...shortened it way too much, and the exciting bits you'll find in the original book was the only things in this book, therefore there was no tension no interesting stuff. And no boring stuff (but all the exciting stuff together makes it boring!) I like the boring stuff in a book because it can build up tension and make you want to read an excited bit... in this book retold by John Kennett didn't have any boring stuff :-( Hmmmmm what else should I type? I know more about the story. Well the differences between the film and the book: Right well I've only seen the film which has Jackie Chan in. Well in that film they go around the world in a hot air balloon. But because this book was made ages ago they travel by steamer (Boat) and train. In my opinion that makes it pretty boring. As a kid, I was already into books, but most of my reading was limited to Tintin, Asterix and Amar Chitra Katha comics, and most of my book reading was limited to fairy tales and folk lore stuff.
